Title: Bruins Playoff Support Thread
Post by: ma11l on April 15, 2009, 01:02:08 PM
It's playoff time around these parts, and that deserves most of our attention.  The Sox are sucking so obviously people will also be griping about that.  We can't forget about our roommates at the Garden, the Bruins.  The playoffs start tomorrow and it is very exciting.

The Garden would be a magical place if both teams go far into the playoffs.  They can feed off of each other and the city from night to night.  Here's hoping the B's go far, and that they crush those [dang] Canadiens in the first round.

I love playoff hockey.  I hope they play the Flyers in the next round, so that I can get to a game.  Past playoff failures have conditioned me to have low expectations, but I love this group of players.  Go, Bruins!

Another playoff series against the Habs?  That's the one team I never want to see in the playoffs.  I don't care how good the Bruins are playing, I always feel like they're the underdogs in this rivalry - I'll be happy if they can make it out of the first round.  Honestly, I gave up on the Bruins a while ago - just no continuity with the players, no one like Bourque or Neely that can sustain themselves as the face of the franchise for a decade or longer - but that's more of a testament to the new NHL than the team, I suppose.

I support the Penguins, a franchise that, through extreme luck in draft lotteries, has thrived as a blue collar sport in a blue collar town.  If Fleury can stay hot (or at least just not revert to his early-season form) then they've got a legit chance to make it back to the Finals.

Missed the first game, do you guys know if these games will be nationally televised? Last year it was very dificult to catch a game on tv.

Great game last night.  Lot of emotion out there.  Bruins looked flat in the 2nd period and the first part of the third but they really turned it up a notch in the last 10 minutes or so.  Montreal really strugged to get it into Boston's zone and that power play goal by Chara was a laser.  It's great to have playoff hockey here.

Not all of them, unfortunately.  It's disgusting the lack of NHL coverage there is.

Watching ESPN, you'd think the NHL doesn't exist anymore.

The NHL pulls down XFL style ratings when nationally broadcast.  I don't blame the major networks for turning them down when they can show a poker tournament which would secure the same ad revenue for 1/10th of the cost.  While it sucks for the fans, I think it's good for hockey in general - bump the sport down the national rankings, force the teams to reconnect with their blue collar fans, and rebuild the connections they lost through the lockout.

I like how this is going to work out.  Here's hoping there's 15 more.  Solid game last night.  I was a little worried when they came out flat in the beginning of the third but overall they were clearly the better team on the ice.

Very sweet go ahead goal.  They could have hung they're heads a bit after the crossbar shot and circus save on the deflection, but they kept attacking.  They smelled blood on the power play.

Very obligatory fighting by Montreal at the end.  You could see their heart wasn't really in the fighting, but they felt like it was the thing to do.

You can pick up free internet audio feeds from the home team. I listened to the Canadian radio broadcast feed while watching the Celtics. As far as TV goes, some of the games are on Versus and I have the local Fox and Hound that picks up NESN on satillite. Other than that it is very tough to get hockey coverage outside the East coast. Maybe the Chicago Blackhawks, Detriot Red Wings, Boston Bruins, and New York Rangers can command national attention this spring.

I've been pleased with ESPN's coverage of the NHL playoffs. They're talking about hockey a lot more than they usually do... Now all we have to do is get them to talk about the Bruins. I'm so sick of hearing about Barry Melrose's very unhealthy mancrush on Ovechkin and how much of a Ranger fan Linda Cohn is.

Then again teams from Boston like slipping into championship wins without the national media giving them any respect... so in that case, keep talking about the Rangers, Sharks, Caps, and RedWings... and we'll keep feeding off of their ignorance.

GO BRUINS!!!

2-1 B's after the first period.

Habs got one right off the bat but the Bruins really turned it on at the end of the period and put up 2 about a minute apart or so.

At least the Montreal fans were classy this time during the American national anthem.

Yeah, things could get ugly in this 3rd period. In the stands, the ice, or both.

I thought that "234 years ago a small rag tag group of....." Patriot's Day rant by Jack Edwards was pretty funny the other night but tonight's "Reach for the light switch its time to start saving some energy on Earth Day" line was just awesome.

Edwards is definitely a polarizing figure.  I know a bunch of my hardcore hockey fans absolutely hate him but he can certainly throw some zings out there.

Fred Cusick was the best.  Bruins hockey has never been the same to watch since he retired.

Grew up with him and the Turk on TV38.

The Canadiens didn't even show that kind of "life"...The B's just sucked the life out of them.  A thing of beauty.

Well, I know I'm watching the game tonight to get my mind off Bulls/Celtics for a bit.

Feels like its been forever since the B's last played.  Let's hope there's not too much rust and they go out and lay the smackdown on the Carolina Whalers...err....Hurricanes.

I still miss "Brass Bonanza".

Carolina seems like they'll be ready to give a good battle.

In desperate need of a distraction before Game 7 tonight, I'm comforted by how well the Bruins are playing. They destroyed Carolina last night. They outworked, outmuscled, played better defense, had better goaltending, and were generally one step ahead of the Whalers. Great win, 5 down and 11 to go. 5th TP for our OP as well.

Claude has to win coach of the year. This guy is unbelievable, and to transition this team from the 8 seed to the best team in the east is a testament to him and Chiarelli. Unfortunately, we probably won't be able to keep all our young guys, but this team should be a contender from years to come.

I just love the B's chances of winning it all this year. I don't see Carolina being able to score that much against the B's so as long as the PP stays effective, both scoring and preventing, I think the Bruins cruise through to the conference finals. I just don't think Carolina will beat Boston at even strength and that their only hope lies in the power play. Boston in four or five games.

I also like the fact that I think Washington and Pittsburgh will be a long series and that the Bruins could see another rest brfore taking on the winner. Lastly, only Detroit gives me pause as a team that I think could beat the Bruins this year. They may not have the name superstars that Pittsburgh, San Jose, Washington and other teams have but I believe they are far away the best TEAM in the NHL this year.
