If the Celtics did trade Pierce + Perk + Sheed ...

What top free agent would want to join the Celtics? An All-Star point guard in Rajon Rondo + an aging star in Garnett?

Not exactly a great selling point to prospective free agents.

Donīt forget Ray Allen on a MLE contract.

*winkwink*
No MLE if they used their cap space. Just minimum contracts from thereon in.

Bi-annual? LLE? Anything?

Roy Hobbs?

Nope. First, i think the lle and bi-annual are the same thing, just different names; that would be marquis daniels this year.

We could use "early Bird" rights on guys like Eddie and TA if they'd accept a 75 percent raise or something like that (or less), but until we renounce them they count agains the cap at their current salary value, so that would diminish the cap space.

well if they traded perk sheed and PP they would have room for a max level and MLE , but just PP and sheed they could only do minimum contracts along with a max.
Not according to my math ....

KG + Rondo + Perk + BBD + Walker = $36.16 million
Draft pick + empty roster spot charges = roughly $3.85 million
Total = $40 million

Cap = $52-54 million
Cap Space = $12-14 million = not enough for a max contract ($16.57 million)

(1) Trade Glen Davis and get the cap space up to $14.5-to-$16.5 million. That would work so long as we get a higher cap figure.

(2) Trade Perk and get the cap space up to $17-19 million. Guaranteed flexibility for a max contract.

I think the Mavs would need Perkins involved to make this deal anyway. Their big man rotation is just too soft to compete for a title without acquiring another center.
If you get lucky, you can get enough space for a max contract by trading BBD ... but for guaranteed cap space you need to trade Perkins.

And you wouldn't have enough for an MLE-like contract afterwards. If you traded Perk + BBD you would get $3-to-$5 million depending on where the cap ends up ($52-$54 million).

So you could get enough for a solid role player if (1) you trade both (Perk + BBD) of those players on top of (2) Pierce + Sheed and (3) you get a high cap figure of around $54 million.

No.

If you think KG is done, what's the point of becoming a player in 2010?  Adding Joe Johnson isn't going to make us a contender if it's at the expense of losing PP and Ray.  Maybe if you could guarantee that Wade comes here, but given our climate and the message it would send if we blew this team up, I wouldn't hold my breath.

If he's not done, then why are we breaking this thing up?

Well if we added Joe Johnson or whoever for the max we would be right around the salary cap of 52-55 mil

BUT

in 2 years KG's 21 MIL comes off the books

So 2012 we could have

Rondo, Max free agent from 2010( JJ, Amare,Bosh) and the ability to add another max free agent in 2012

What is wrong with that scenario? We pick up draft picks to fill out the team

But what's the point of landing a star in 2010?  Why don't we just ride our chances out for the next couple of years, hopefully win another title, then try to make a run at two big time free agents in 2013 when all the Big Three (and Wallace are off the books)?
