ABC - Modern Family (one of the best new shows in a while...very funny)

Agreed... people need to start watching that show, now.

I'm on board

I also like "The Middle". It's quirky but funny. funny.

... just hopefully not FOX which is almost as trashy as MTV and VH1.

You think so?  Fox has some quality programming, in my opinion.  24 and House stack up against anybody, and there are a lot of other decent shows.  I think the days of Fox being an also-ran network are well behind them.

Other than The Office and 30 Rock, what's so great about NBC?  I'd probably rank them 3rd or 4th among the networks.  To me, CBS and Fox by far outpace NBC and ABC.

I agree about Fox's worse days being behind them. Simpons + the Seth MacFarlane shows are the best thing on Sundays besides football and Dexter..and trueblood.

Fringe is a show I absolutely never miss, to the point where I was switching back and forth between it and the game last night until the 4th, where the game got my attention.

Dollhouse has made the transition from quirky to awesome. Too bad Fox didn't notice.
Dollhouse has a great writer. You can always trust him for great Scifi/fantasy.

There are reports now that Jay Leno will once again be the host of the Tonight Show, and that conan is going to go host an 11:00 show on fox. Its all very tentative. But if you want to read more about it, check out TMZ, their updating alot on it.

I'm looking forward to watching conan tonight to get some official word.

Really well done. Mockumentary style like the Office. Great characters.

I would love to see Conan go to FOX and compete directly against Leno. That would be great and he would destroy Leno in the ratings.
Unfortunately this is probably not the case. I love Conan but I think Leno appeals to a wider audience and will crush both Dave and Conan in the ratings. Check Tvbythenumbers and you will find that Conan has been trailing letterman but Leno was destroying Dave when they both were at 11:30. The problem with Conan and Dave being on at the same time is that their styles are too similar and Leno fans probably are not going to like Conan and Dave fans won't jump ship to watch Conan so he is screwed until Letterman retires

Why do you suppose this wide, supposedly loyal audiance can't be bothered to tune in an hour early?

Jay was a good talking head, but NBC's ratings at that time slot were a product of him steering the ship alright and getting good guests, something conan is not doing.

If jay leno the person was such a draw, he wouldn't have lower ratings than Iron chef reruns (look it up, iron chef america beat him two weeks ago)

This move won't wrok for NBC either btw, people will see it for what it is, a complete and utter panic move to try to cover up Leno's failure.

NBC is by far the worst network on television, unless you want to watch a trashy reality TV show. Viewers know it, and will stay away.

His audience did follow him to 10 its just that a lot more eyeballs are watching at 10 so his ratings share is less. Leno usually gets like a 1.5 at ten Conan and Dave are average around .9 at 11:30. Since Leno was dominating Letterman at 11:30 I assume his ratings share was around 1.1 or so, so his audience followed him to 10

Speaking of NBC one of the few quality shows on the network returns sunday night, Chuck. I highly recommend it
The problem with Conan at 11:30 is that he is competing with Colbert and they appeal to a similar demographic. Conan's comedy just isn't stale and bland enough for the market he is trying to reach. He belongs on an edgier network. It isn't surprising to see people shift to Letterman now that Leno isn't around.

Leno on the other hand appeals to a very different demographic than the comedy central 11-12 lineup.

Iron Chef America is amazing. There is nothing shameful in losing out to that!

And this is exactly why that scenario might work.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVg1CW08oHA

I'm wondering how much of this Jay/Conan/NBC thing was actually just a well-crafted publicity stunt...

Have the ratings improved during the drama?

ABC - Modern Family (one of the best new shows in a while...very funny)

I just started watching Modern Family after a few people told me it was funny, and they were right. Not great but funny enough.
I'm not sure what this has to do with the whole Conan thing, but since I have never watched either Conan or Leno, it's all I can contribute to this. I've never had any interest in these king of talk shows.
I do watch the Daily Show every night. I have to get the news somewhere.

Transcript from Conan's final speech:

Quote from: Sun Times Blog
Between my time at "Saturday Night Live," "The Late Night Show," and my brief run here on "The Tonight Show," I've worked with NBC for over 20 years.
Yes, we have our differences right now, yes we're going our separate ways, but this company has been my home for most of my adult life.
I am enormously proud of the work we've done together. And I want to thank NBC for making it all possible.
I really do.
A lot of people have been asking me about my state of mind and I'll be honest with you, walking away from "The Tonight Show" is the hardest thing I have ever had to do.
Um, making this choice has been enormously difficult.  This is the best job in the world.
I absolutely love doing it and I have the best staff and crew in the history of the medium.
I will fight anybody who says I don't, but noone would.
But despite this sense of loss, I really feel this should be a happy moment.  Every comedian...every comedian dreams of hosting "The Tonight Show" and for seven months, I got to do it.
And I did it my way with people I love.  I do not regret one second of anything that we've done here.
And yeah.
And I encounter people when I walk on the street now who are just uh who give me sort of a sad look.
I have had more fortune than anybody I know.
And if our next gig is doing a show in a 7-Eleven Parking lot we will find a way to make it fine.  We really will.
I have no problems.  And, I don't want to do it on a 7-Eleven parking lot.
But whatever, uh, finally I have something to say to our fans.
This massive outpouring of support and passion from so many people has been overwhelming for me.
The rallies, the signs, all the goofy outrageous creativity on the Internet uh, the fact that people have traveled long distances and camped out all night in the pouring rain.
(Audience cheers)
It's pouring! It's been pouring for days and they're camping out to be in our audience.
Really, you...Here's what all of you have done.
You've made a sad situation joyous and inspirational.
So to all the people watching I can never ever thank you enough for the kindness to me and I'll think about it for the rest of my life.
And all I ask is one thing...and this is...I'm asking this particularly of young people that watch...please do not be cynical.
I hate cynicism. For the record, it's my least favorite quality.
It doesn't lead anywhere.
Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get.
But if you work really hard and you're kind, amazing things will happen.  I'm telling you.  Amazing things will happen.  (Audience claps) I'm telling you.
It's just true.

That was an incredible speech, IP.  Conan's a very intelligent guy. The whole bit about cynicism was right on, IMO.

The last few episodes of Conan were pretty awesome television.

Both the Robin Williams and Tom Hanks interviews were hilarious. The Pee Wee Herman sketch was priceless too.
