We are roughly at the halfway point in the season and there are currently 4 teams fighting for the best record in the NBA. Here are my thoughts.
The Celtics have played through a brutal stretch of games without much rest as widely reported and their schedule should be easier on their legs for the rest of the season. However until their bench plays better, the young players improve more, or reinforcements come in, I am skeptical they can finish with the best record.
I think the Cavs have been playing maybe slightly over their heads due to James playing insane basketball. Can he keep that up all season after also playing ball during the summer for team USA? I don't see why not as his MPG are down this year however their schedule gets tougher and they have started to get some injuries/flu with Z, Wallace, and West all starters currently out. Bad timing right before a west coast trip.
The Magic are my darkhorse team. Nobody ever talks about them. They have a really really good starting 5 led by Howard but my only question with them is how will their bench hold up. However their starting unit is young and can afford to play big minutes in my opinion. They are also the only team on my list that has played more away games than home games so schedule should be in their favor the rest of the way.
I don't think the Lakers can do it for the simple fact there are too many good teams out west Denver, Portland, Utah, Phoenix, San Antonio, New Orleans, Houston, and Dallas for them to finish with the best record.
If I had to pick another team it would be the Spurs. You can never count them out and they have their big 3 back healthy however with already 13 losses it will be tough for them to gain the top spot.
In the end my heart is saying the Celtics, I would have said the Cavs if it weren't for Z and now West out for an extended period, however I will go with my darkhorse team the Magic. I hope I'm wrong
