I don't understand the big deal. Sure, he's expected to be a role model (although whether he accepts this is his choice). But taking a bong hit isn't that bad. With the US slowly decriminalizing marijuana, isn't it about time that we stop making a big deal when a person is caught with pot? If anything, I would be more worried that Phelps is hurting his lungs than him breaking the law. But a few bong hits aren't going to hurt him.

I'm guessing none of you have children who look up to athletes. How sad it is going to be when I have to explain to my son, who watched him in the Olympics, that this guy who is supposed to be a role model does drugs?! How do they sell in school and their anti-drug programs that drugs harm the body when one of the greatest athletes of all time is doing this? I don't understand how people can dismiss this affect it has on our youth. How many kids who wouldn't have tried the drug will say "It didn't hurt Michael Phelps" now. Very sad.

Well, you can explain to them that it cost him millions of dollars, because this surely will, from the endorsement area.  You would think that athletes who are going to do stuff like this would at least be smart enough not to get photographed.

it also raises an unnecessary doubt (however large or small depending on the person) that if Phelps doesn't care to respect the laws of this country, what will stop him from disrespecting the drug laws of the Olympics.  I am not necessarily saying I believe this, but it is certainly plausible that some will.

Maybe. But honestly when I have kids if they ask me about drugs I'll probably point them at the many smart and capable friends of mine who will probably never be anything more than waiters because they just smoke pot all day whenever they're not working or drinking themselves into a stupor.

Holding up athletes as paragons of morale behavior is always dangerous.
