Game Notes
The Celtics will try to climb back to .500 once again as they visit the Bucks.  The Celtics lost to the Bucks in their home opener and now will seek to avenge that loss.  The Bucks have been surprising this season, getting off to a strong 3-1 start, including a win on the road against the Celtics to open the season.

Both teams are playing in the second of back to back games and both teams will be traveling.  The Celtics are coming off a 6 point loss to the Sixers at home.  The Bucks are coming off a 10 point win vs the Wizards in Washington.  Fatigue could be a factor for the Celtics veteran players.

The Celtics defense is once again coming under fire as they allowed the Philly, who were the worst scoring team coming in,  to score 106 points.  The Bucks are averaging 98 points a game and so the Celtics need to clamp down on defense if they hope to get past the Bucks in this game.

The Celtics have the pieces to be very good but they just can't seem to put it together.  A win in this game would go a long way toward respectability.  A loss on the other hand could lead to panic among Celtics fans.

Key Matchups
(http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/4149.jpg)vs(http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/4615.jpg)
Rajon Rondo vs Brandon Jennings
Jennings won the matchup in the first meeting between these two teams.  He scored 21 points on 9-17 shooting to go with 13 assists while Rondo finished with 14 points and 11 assists.  Jennings seemed to get whatever he wanted in that game as the Celtics simply could not stop the pick and roll.   Rondo needs to step up a bit more in this game, especially on the defensive end.

(http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/4484.jpg)vs(http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/3966.jpg)
Courtney Lee vs Monta Ellis
Ellis is capable of putting a lot of points on the board and CLee needs to clamp down defensively to try to contain him.  Lee defended Ellis well in their first meeting, holding him to 14 points. Lee has been struggling on the offensive end, however and hopefully can find his stroke soon along with continuing to play tough defense on Ellis.

Honorable Mention
Kevin Garnett vs Samuel Dalembert
Dalembert scored just 2 points in the first game between these two teams while KG scored 15.  Hopefully that pattern continues in this game.

Keys to the Game

DEFENSE! -   The Celtics must tighten up their defense, especially on the pick and roll.  They allowed way too many easy points against the Bucks in the home opener.  Hopefully we will see the tough defense that we have come to expect from them.  The Bucks can put up a lot of points and they also defend well so the Celtics must play tough defense if they want to get this win.

Rebound - The Celtics must crash the boards to prevent the Bucks from getting second chance points.  Rebounding is all about effort and when the Celtics put out the effort on the boards that effort seems to carry over into all the other areas of their game.  Failure to rebound will result in a failure to win.  The Celtics were outrebounded 46 to 36 in their first meeting.

Limit Turnovers- The Celtics turn the ball over way too much.  They make careless passes.  They lose track of their defender and lose the ball to them.  They dribble into traffic and lose the handle.  All of this could be fixed with more focus on the part of each player.  The Celtics need to turn it over fewer than the 18 times they did in the home opener against this team.

Bench Play
- The Celtics have a deep bench and they have some good players on the bench however, they are a work in progress as the try to develop chemistry.  Players have been up and down but we have seen some nice things from Jet and Chris Wilcox and Bass in the past couple of games.  Hopefully they have a strong outing in this one.

X-Factors

Defense and Bench Play
The Celtics need to get back to their defensive priorities that they have become known for since KG joined the team.   They need to especially be more consistent on pick and roll defense.   Also, the second unit has to find their chemistry and be more consistent.

Where is our sense of urgency?  These are the games we should be taking advantage of.  Not having a homecourt advantage has killed us off the past couple years in the playoffs.  We NEED a homecourt advantage.  We can't afford to keep playing like this, even if we did pick it up down the line.

Jeff Green has been the biggest disappointment so far with Lee not far behind.

Hopefully, we start winning some games starting tomorrow

you know in 2k13 im having a hard time slowing opponent's guards down and i cant believe its actually happening in real life.

Although at least in 2k13 my boston celtics doesnt play with the Bass/Sully combo upfront.

Our team is getting destroyed by penetration in the paint, we saw it Turkey , it was exposed then , and the Celtics continue to get sliced up at will by other teams.  With only KG seeminly having any effect on "ANYBODY" who wants to score in the paint on the Celtics.

Jeff Green is an amazing looking human, body of a god , who doesn't appear to know the first thing about playing team basketball.

good points above.

to me at least, on defense the celtics seems to lack commitment and passion. also, i have seen a number of poor switches by players on defense. the result has been wide open shots or drives to the basket for opponents at crucial times.

on offense, one thing i have seen is that the celtics seem to fall into the trap of being a jump shooting team. this is a low-percentage offense that usually gives them a single shot followed by the other team rebounding the ball. the team seems almost lazy and willing often to settle for the easy shot right now.

very inconsistent low post game by the team so far.

jeff green...i dont know what to say anymore. i have been a big supporter of him. he has all the talent to be a very very good player. but when he is on the court he seems to almost disappear for stretches. i hope he over comes this soon.

but, no matter what....

go celtics!!!! they will win tonight!!!  ;D

Instead of panicking let's focus on the positives.
1. KG is playing like KG.
2. Paul is healthy.
3. Rondo is CONSISTENTLY great so far.
4. Jet is finally comfortable on the offense.
5. Green and Wilcox are fully healthy.
6. Sullinger is healthy and productive.

Give some time for:
1. Green to figure out his role.  He has the most difficult role to learn.  He's being asked to play 3 positions by Doc.
2. Lee to figure out his role.  He's currently playing a different role without Bradley.
3. Sullinger to learn NBA focus and personnel.
4. Team's communication on half court defense without KG.
5. Team's effort on transition defense

Doc is not "experimenting."  It is obvious our 4 bigs are KG, Bass, Sullinger and Wilcox.  Get used to the Bass/Sullinger front-line.  They will get better defensively with experience and effort.

Darko and Collins are situational role players/ back ups/ practice bodies.  They would have to earn a spot by out working a rotation player.

We are going to be a great team.  You can see that in how we start games.  We have to figure out how to not lose momentum when KG leaves in the first quarter.  Bass/Sullinger have to talk more and hustle on defense.  We will see how we do today.

Also, I'm not giving up on Green.  It's time to step it up, Jeff.

Play Green at 3! Don't force him against opposing bigs.

He's going to be playing minutes at the four all season.  I think we need to accept that fact, and just start to hope that he learns to play it better than he has been.

He needs to be on the court for more than fifteen to twenty minutes a game, which is all that's available at small forward.

Bass and Sullinger need to box out on Ilyasova all night and we win, simple as that. Ilyasova had 4 offensive boards last game. Ellis and Jennings are too dangerous offensively to allow them extra shots. Rebounding and interior defense will be the keys to victory tonight. We did a really poor job of protecting the rim the last time we faced the Bucks.

Of course it's a joke.  He's playing on the general feelings among the faithful of fed-uppedness with small ball.

I think Green on Ersan and Wilcox on Sanders when KG is on the bench is fine.

I think Pierce neeeds to keep an eye on Tobias Harris tonite. He had entirely too good of a game in the previous matchup for my taste.

agreed. Pierce tends to get lazy on defense, especially against younger, lesser known guys like Harris.

Likely the Bucks see Terry as a mismatch against Ellis and go right at him.

Course neither plays great defense anyway so maybe Jet can score as well.

I would put Rondo on Monta and Terry on Jennings.

Monta Ellis is too powerful / physically strong / explosive for Terry on dribble penetration. Jennings is the easier matchup for Terry.

Weird.

It's not Rondo, it's Tery playing crap D.

I guess you're closing your eyes every time Jennings has the ball in his hands.
Nah. Just the three consecutive inside dunks seemed to come off of pick and rolls, where we didn't cover the pass inside.

And Rajon doesn't get nearly enough respect from refs.

i'm at the point where I accept that Rondo will never shoot free throws much better than 60 percent. Good to see they have tightened the D tonight.

If Wade or LeBron hit the floor as often and as hard as he does they'd both shoot 20 free throws a game. Rondo might not quite be in that class, but come on, zebras..

I know why Celtics are getting killed by Pick and Roll. They don't practice against it enough. Celtics offense aren't predicated executing that play because of the way teams defend against going under the screen. It negates all the advantages.  Celtics were the second least efficient pick-and-roll offense in the league last season.

I'd like to keep Lee in with the starters (to check guys like Ellis), just give him less minutes overall.  The bench struggled offensively without Terry's ball-handling (Barbosa's not the kind of player you want as the sole ball-handler on the floor - so much more effective as a secondary attacker).

Pierce is leading the team in rebounds tonight with 7 at the half. I saw him go to the floor multiple times for loose balls, and hustle on defensive rotations. I don't know what game you are watching. I said he was a step off on offense, but he's hustling his butt off.

What the hell - did the Celtics change hand powder at the start of this game?  It's like our guys just cannot catch a pass.

I actually don't mind how Green started the game.  He wasn't super aggressive but he was WAY more aggressive then he was in the first 5 games.  At least he tried to post up and tried to score.  He made a couple of decent passes as well but the guys on the other end just let the ball go straight through their hands.

Bass inside scares me...he's like Perk in the post.  Every time he catches an offensive rebound he brings the ball back down, gives the defense plenty of time to surround him with three players, and then tries to go back up.  Why???  One shot today he grabbed the offense board and had a good 2-3 seconds with nobody near him to put it back up...but he brought it down instead.  By the time he went back up there were 2-3 defenders around him.  He did get fouled and went to the line, but we could have had 2 easy points.

That's the thing I like about Sully. When he grabs a reboud he doesn't bring it down - he goes straight up with it and mos of the time he scores as a result.

Out defensive rebounding has been disgusting - every posesstion we are giving them at least 2-3 chances to score.  We are just so [dang] lucky they are missing their shots, because we should be down by at least 15 right now.

I like that Green is looking to at least try to score when he's getting the ball now.  Missed a few shots but that's ok - as he takes more shots he'll start getting in a rythym, but he can't ever score if he doesn't try.

Pierce and Rondo have been throwing way too many risky passes over the last few games. They keep driving hard to the basket and then trying to pass out through 2 or 3 opposing players.  The majority of the time when they do this it's leading to turnovers, and even when one of our guys DOES catch it, they usually struggle to do so and end up not being in a position to score.

Absolutely love the way Jeff is playing...not just on offense, but, his defense looks much better too, he looks like he actually gets the concepts, he is rotating well.
He is also rebounding the ball well.
By far his best game of the season, but, that's not really saying much.

The Refs did everything they could to rig that game at the end with those two calls. The "ft line violation" was so ridiculous that it could only have been thought of ahead of time to secure the boston win.

Milwaukee announcers hardly mentioned it. No souls.

KG's had countless 1 out of 2's in a lot of crucial moments, I trust Pierce a lot more with late game free throws than anyone else on this team but I don't have an automatic feeling with anyone on this team shooting free throws with the game on the line.

the guy had open heart surgery 10 months ago. Naysayers are irrational.

I don't think that's the reason at all, and I don't think it's an excuse either.

Green's play in the preseason proved that he has no problem with his physical conditioning, and proved that he still knows how to play the game.

First 5 games I think he just didn't didn't have the confidence, and didn't have an aggresive mentality.

Today right from the started he was getting more involved.  Very rarely (if at all) today did I see him just stand in the corner for 5-8 seconds on offense (as he has in the previous games) - he was moving much more without the ball.

Possible that having Terry move to the starting lineup helped, as this helped single out Green as the clearly go-to guy off the bench.  Previously Terry was playing like the #1 guy on the second unit, and Green seemed to be happy to just leave that to him.

Also possible that he got fed up of losing games and decided he was going to do something out there.  Or maybe KG and Doc lit a firecracker under his rear end!

Don't care why it is, just glad to see the preseason version of JG making a comback.  Now he just needs to keep it up!!

the guy had open heart surgery 10 months ago.

I agree it started with rebounding and then him setting some nice screens, his offense started clicking from there let's hope he can keep it up

I like that doc seems to be done with the Bass/sullinger back-court...I think that helped alot with our defense

Wilcox was the first big off the bench, with Sully subbing for bass...

Woke up, ran to the computer, and saw the good news.

BOS beat a probable playoff team last nght.

Still a lot of fight left in this team...they are STILL gelling as a team, but it's wins like THIS that prove what BOS can still do.

Great win, C's!

Jason Terry played the second least minutes he's played in any game this season.

It was nice to see Jeff Green finally start to earn some more minutes.

Luckily, Chris Wilcox is rounding into shape so that Doc doesn't have to play two undersized power forwards together on the front line.
