6’11, 240 lbs

-High-level shooter for a big man.  quick and compact release. comfortable shooting in pick-and-pop or spot-up. Shooting 37.7% from three on an encouraging 8.1 3PA/40 and 76.5% at the line. Projects to be a true shooting 5 in the NBA.
-Elite court vision and passing. Great at kicking out of doubles in the post, decisive and smart in the way he swings the ball around the perimeter. Will be a dynamic passer in “short-roll” situations in the NBA.
- Extremely smart help defender. Always in the right position making backline rotations. Gets a lot of “point-of-release” blocks because he is in the right place.
-Fantastic handle for a big guy. Comfortable attacking closeouts and putting the ball on the deck in transition. His shooting, passing, and dribbling combination make him a difficult guard in pick-and-pop situations.
-doesn’t turn 19 until December

I like the player. For some reason, I feel like Jontay Porter is Mike Conley, while Michael Porter is Greg Oden.

Can't jump over a phonebook from that video, was he hurt or something?

He is going to have to be something because he looked earthbound, but I liked his touch as you say and he plays smart.

had a poor vertical at the combine so I'm thinking that's his athleticism right  now lol

Maybe his muscles are catching up to his height if he grew too fast?

Good call...he could possibly be groomed to be the backup to Awesome Al.

Per The Ringer 2018 NBA Draft Guide:

https://nbadraft.theringer.com/

"A young, skilled big man who spaces the floor and does all the little things on offense but must improve his defense.
SHADES OF: Detlef Schrempf, Drew Gooden, Trey Lyles
PLUSES
Excellent passer from all areas of the floor; he's accurate and he makes quick reads.
Fluid ball handler who uses crossovers, hesitations, and spin moves to attack the basket from the perimeter or high post.
Elite screener for his age; he could develop into a multidimensional screening threat on the pop, short roll, and dives.
Solid positional defender who tends to make good rotations; he’s not a rim protector, but there’s value in not screwing up.
If he adds muscle, projects as a sturdy low-post defender due to his effort level and positioning.
MINUSES
Subpar athlete who lacks quickness; an NBA conditioning coach will help turn his youthful blubber into professional brawn.
Poor rebounder for his position, though with his basketball IQ, he can make up for it by boxing out.
Lacks the length to protect the rim and the agility to roam the perimeter, meaning he may be exploitable on defense.
Struggles scoring around the rim due to lack of pop; he misses an unusual amount of “easy ones.”
Can clearly shoot the rock, but his set form and low release could use some refinement to ensure it translates to the NBA."

Given the quality of big men available this year, versus the early read on the quality for next year, that looks like a good move.

Jontay has torn his acl and mcl. Wonder how far he falls in the draft.

He'll stay in college.  Probably a 4 year college player at this point.  It's pretty much his only hope of salvaging any of his draft stock.

4 years? He was projected 1st rounder. I can see a team gamble their 1st on him still

Seems unlikely to me.  I wouldn't touch this kid right now.  Too risky to spend a 1st on him.

I like Porter's potential.  He's very skilled.  His problem was that he wasn't in good shape.  He wasn't very muscular and had a high % of body fat. He was young for his year though as he reclassed going to college early to play with his brother.  I think he's an interesting guy to potentially use a pick on if either the Memphis or Clippers pick conveys this year.

Even after tearing his ACL and MCL? I feel as if the MEM pick would be way too high to be gambled on a guy like Porter
