I am worried the kings will offer him 3 year max contract
If Al leaves my guess it will be to a true contender. not the Kings.
3 year max would be hard to pass on. $120M + is more than what he has earned in his first 10 years of playing in the nba
The Kings don't project to have anywhere near Horford's max unless they let Barnes/WCS go.

If Woj is saying there is motivation on both sides that means Celtics can’t give him an insulting offer. It has to be at least $75M over theee years.

I think they do have a max cap space if they resign Barnes and WCS for less than $30M combined. So 22 to Barnes if he opts out and 7M to WCS

What’s this mean for our cap room as far as sign a max free agent or a d’ Angelo russel?

It does nothing for our "cap room". Al and Kyrie both still have cap holds until they either sign a new deal here or sign somewhere else.

That said, take whatever Al would have made next year, subtract one million, and then subtract whatever he signs with us for (including zero if he signs elsewhere), and that’s our cap room if we let all of our other free agents walk.  I don’t think that’s what will happen, nor a remotely ideal scenario, but that’s the simple math as of today.

The Celts are probably a lottery team without Al, so hopefully he comes back at a reasonable figure.

All the reporting sounds pretty positive in that regard though.

Mannix yesterday stated he thought the deal would be done by Sunday. This is the first logical step.

One CBA thing -- can teams agree to terms with their own pending free agents prior to the moratorium period?  I feel like the answer is no, that you can't have any actual agreements to new contracts until the free agency period begins, but maybe I'm forgetting that it doesn't apply to teams negotiating with their own FAs?

I understand that teams are allowed to talk to their own guys and that an unofficial handshake agreement might be made and then reported later.

They're not a contender with him at this point either.

Results are the same regardless.
Still don't believe in Joe.

I would give Horford a deal similar to what Dwight got when signing with ATL (3 years, 70M, ~23M AAV)

I doubt anyone offers Horford the max but people need to realize that there are a handful of teams with cap space still and if Al was truly there at 18-20M AAV, tons of teams would be interested. Even the Lakers (barf) if they struck out on others.

  • Let's Go Celtics!
I think we are likely to re-sign him but man, to lose Kyrie and Al in an offseason would truly be turning a page. Stay home Al!

Plot twist: Kyrie AND Al sign with Brooklyn.
2021 Houston Rockets
PG: Kyrie Irving/Patty Mills/Jalen Brunson
SG: OG Anunoby/Norman Powell/Matisse Thybulle
SF: Gordon Hayward/Demar Derozan
PF: Giannis Antetokounmpo/Robert Covington
C: Kristaps Porzingis/Bobby Portis/James Wiseman

They aren't the same though.   It's true that the Celts aren't a contender whether or not Horford returns.

However, the goal for the team right now is to develop Tatum and Brown.  We want to have the best version of those guys.

My feeling is those players, and the other young guys, are more likely to succeed and develop well if the team has a stable structure in place.  Horford provides that structure, on court and off the court.

If Horford leaves, that throws a lot of things into flux, including the team's game plan on offense and defense.  I would expect all the players on the team, including Tatum and Brown, to struggle to figure out how to adjust to such a scenario.

Bottom line, name of the game now is maximizing the young players the Celts have on the roster.  Having Horford in place will help that.

Weren't Al and Kyrie expected to not exercise their player options? The shocking news would have been if either would have exercised their option.
