We could have done it and it could have worked, but BKN has a lot less to lose if all of those guys walk in a couple of years, as they can just sign new shiny star FAs at that point. Boston (and any team outside of NY/LA/maybe MIA) doesn't have that luxury. We are all psyched that we ripped BKN off and were able to draft and develop Tatum/Brown - they just went out and signed even bigger stars for nothing.
