Best individual player 1 through 4.

We don't need a PF. Tatum can play there. Jaylen can play SG or SF. We can add anyone SG-SF-PF. Whoever is the best individual / works best as combination next to Jaylen & Tatum.

PG is the biggest positional need but we need stars not role players. If that star is a SG, SF or PF then that is the direction we go in and we fill the PG slot later. Stars is the priority.

One of the many reasons to keep the Jays. They're super easy to build around.

Lol, the team has been built around the Jay's for two seasons now, and yet they're a .500 team during that span. So no, it's not easy.

"Super" easy is probably hyperbole.

But compared to if we had someone like Bradley Beal (you'll probably need defenders around him) or Sabonis (shooting and defense), the Jays are relatively a lot easier. Even a guy like Adebayo (who's so versatile defensively and kind of unique offensively in his ability to pass) to you'd need to get more shooting around him.

Aside from playmaking the Jays can do it all, defend up or down positions, shooting...

A pg with size and a pass first mentality would be my first choice.  Second, a pf taller than 6'6" who can rebound and make 3s at least 38% of the time.

I was going to start a new thread, but I hate starting new threads. Anyway, what about Collin Sexton? He is obviously out this year with a torn meniscus, but he is a gifted scoring PG who has averaged 38% from 3pt throughout his career. He will need to be paid this offseason, but by trading for him now, we would be able to match any offer he receives.

I am not sure what we would need to give up, but it would seemingly be less than other upper tier 3rd star types. I saw this passage on Fansided (in link - no, I don't read Fansided) discussing the idea of Jaylen/G Williams for Sexton/Love/Markkanen/3 1sts/2 swaps/2 2nds. Obviously I hate to give up Jaylen - and this definitely wouldn't be my plan in Sexton trade - but that is a lot of draft compensation coming along with a young player at a position of need who averaged over 24ppg last season.

https://kingjamesgospel.com/2022/01/05/three-blockbuster-collin-sexton-trade-scenarios/3/

The fansided proposed deal would be a no go for me....

However Sexton is an interesting thought.

For the Cavs I wonder if he has more trade value at the deadline or as a S&T piece in the off-season?

For the Celtics I can't see BS trading a current rotational piece (say Smart alone /  Richardson and a pick/  or DS and a pick) for an injured player. Especially after just trading for two injured players. That clearly sends a message to the team that the tank is on and I really doubt that's what the Cs front office/owner ship is looking for.

As for Sexton the player I worry that he is actually less of a play maker then Schroder and will only further compound the teams current issues. A case can be made for adding Sexton and a connecting type 4 like K Anderson or J Ingles but I worry we would just end up with 3 players taking turns on offense rather then the current two.

Maybe the Pistons (share back-court with Cade) of the Pacers (share a back-court with Brogdon) will be willing to make a punt till next season trade for Sexton? I especially like this idea for the Pacers. With Sabonis going down if they can make a 3 team trade work where they move Turner and Levert and in the process keep their own pick but obtain Sexton they could really change the franchises trajectory.  Its a long shot but say they land the #1 pick and draft J Smith. Sabonis, Smith, Brogdan and Sexton in theory fit well together.

Sexton is kinda dodgy. He is a woeful defender at either guard spot. Too slow for PGs, too small for SGs. Bad on switches. Not good. Doesn't rebound much either.

Offensively, he is a scorer and secondary ball-handler / playmaker. He can't play PG without people around him to help him whether it is playmaking wings or a facilitating big man. He'd likely need to play SG on our roster next to a proper PG on our Celtics team given our lack of passing.

Sexton is less of a PG (passing wise) than Smart. Nevermind Schroder.

Not a guy I am comfortable investing a lot of money in. Maybe if we could get somebody else in first and then have Sexton come in and be the 4th option or 4th/5th best player next to Rob Williams.

He is mostly an empty stats guy and he has made little progress in changing that throughout his career despite his strong shooting ability and shot-creation.

I like Brogdon, but he’s just too injury prone. How about Levert?

Is Levert ok? Feels like he dropped off a bit since doing well on the Nets, but that's just my feeling.

Even Warren is nice. Without considering long term salary stuff. The Pacers are a good trade partner if we decide to commit a bit more.

Edit:
You know what. Brogdon would be so good. Just watching last night, that Jaylen Brown defensive possession where he left Covington open...

We just don't have anyone who's "cerebral" on the court. Takes some of the pressure off the guys from having to overthink. Is Brogdon that guy - would be great to have that in a 6'6 body? Is it someone else?

Of course a point guard (which translates to: a very good playmaker). That's our biggest weakness. Aside from that I don't think we need to search for a starting quality power forward. Brown and Tatum at the 3/4 works best i.m.o.
Getting a 3-point specialist who is an off-ball threat (SG) would be my secondary target.

Yeah.  I know that Sexton considers himself a future superstar but I feel that him not playing this year is a primary reason the Cavs are playing so well.  Garland has thrived and everybody seems to know their roles.  The Cavs seemed to be a group of individuals with Sexton, now they seem like a team.  Sexton is talented but I get a Jordan Clarkson/Monta Ellis vibe from him.  He can help a team with scoring but I suspect that Sexton sees himself as much more.

Generally speaking, I reckon we desperately need better ball movement. We could have a use for a pass-first player. He doesn't have to be a star. He doesn't have to be a PG either. For instance, I'd love us to go after Joe Ingles or Kyle Anderson.

This, that's why I wanted Lonzo Ball and not sign Marcus last season, we should have tried to get him, he would have been a much better fit , imo

Brogdon is also my ideal trade target. It’s the injuries that scare me. Right now he’s out at least 10 days with an achilles problem. He’s been having problems with that achilles for about a month now. Indiana also gave Brogdon a contract extension which makes him untradeable til the offseason.

Levert on the other hand has also been injury prone but has been playing well with Brogdon out. Maybe Levert is the more possible target? With the emergence of Duarte, perhaps Indiana would want to explore what they could get with Levert.

I should note that I am not a huge Sexton guy or anything, he just seems like a good young player that we should be able to get on a long-term contract without breaking the bank. The thing is, I'd actually really like him next to Marcus, but am afraid that he would be required in a trade.

If it's not clear, I don't think we need a PF at all, as I want Tatum playing PF full-time. He just has such a match-up advantage there, especially given his added muscle. Grant is more than fine as a back-up PF.

This is one of the few plans that the J's may actually work together. Simmons has the weight to actually call for the ball and receive it, and stop the J's from sometimes shooting the team in the foot. Our switch happy coach would be in heaven.

End of the Rob Williams era.

Gotta move on from a non-shooting / garbage man center to a floor spacing center (like Myles Turner). Or small ball with Simmons at center.

It would be pretty cool to see Simmons at center, the Jays at forward and two guards who handle it and shoot. Whether that be as a starting unit or a death lineup ala GSW with Draymond. That lineup would be so tough to matchup with.

I also love the defensive capacity of M.Turner & B.Simmons with the Jays as the 3rd and 4th best defenders in the lineup. That is an amazingly talented defensive unit. They should have excellent offensive chemistry as well as everyone is in their comfort zone and allowed play to their strengths.
