Hockey - Bobby Orr
Basketball - Bill Russell
Baseball - Ted Williams
Football -  Tom Brady

Massachusetts has produced great players in other sports too.

We only have football, and that's debatable.
Isaiah, you were lightning in a bottle.

Football would be Brown, LT (as in Lawrence), or Rice along with your choice of several QB's including Brady.  For my money LT is the most dominant game changing player I have seen in the past 40 years.

I don't know how anyone can debate the Bill Russell selection. Count the rings baby!! Sorry Michael you are not close.

I agree.  I think Bill Russell stands for all that is right with sports though.  Jordan was a media darling but didn't have Russell's intellect.

Brady is the greatest football player I've ever seen. I grew up idolizing Emmitt Smith and Brady is absurd.

Ted Williams. Greatest hitter.

Bobby Orr. I saw Gretzky and think he's the best but Orr was the perfect hockey player.  I don't know.  Gretzky was so fast.  But you couldn't touch him.

This is the wrong forum for people to insinuate that anyone other than Bill Russell is the greatest basketball player ever.

We have Basketball (Russell) and football (Brady) locked down. I don't know about baseball and hockey though.

LOL!

Time to wade into the silliest of arguments, so:

Hockey:  Orr
Basketball:  Russell (followed closely by Wilt)
Baseball: Ruth (followed closely by Ted)
Football: Brady
Football: Pelé
Golf: Nicklaus (I thought Woods would pass him, but alas, the Golden Bear still reigns)
Tennis:  Federer / Serena
Boxing:  Ali
Swimming:  Phelps
Sprinter: Bolt
Distance:  Gebrselassie
Overall Greatest Athlete, ever:  Jim Thorpe

Edit: Added Bolt & Gebrselassie

Usain Bolt needs a category.

I'm not going to post a list, but I think Brady's case in football is one of the strongest. Just as strong as Jordan's or Russell's in hoops. Just as strong as Ruth's in baseball.

Gretzky as #1 in hockey might be clearer, though I'm not a REAL HOCKEY FAN so maybe that's just my casual observation.

If you go Orr for Hockey, then you have to go Koufax for baseball. While Bobby Orr is arguably the most talented player ever to play, he played what twelve years? And only eight great ones.  Same with Koufax. He was the best pitcher ever - for six years. Kind of like Pedro too, but longevity wise, he didn't last. I think you have to take into account longevity when you say best ever. It is also why I think Lebron surpasses Bird for best SF ever. He will play far longer, and be far more dominant for a longer period of time, though I think Bird overall was a superior basketball player.

Hockey: Gretzky
Baseball: Willie Mays
Basketball: Bill Russell
Football: Lawrence Taylor

Speaking of best BB starting line-up.  Magic, Michael, Lebron, Bill Russell (at the 4!) and Wilt. Bird Sixth man.

Brady as the best football player ever is a joke and even an biased Patriots fan would admit that.

I think Brady is the best ever though.  Better than Jim Brown.  He's made his idol Montana who was the best look human.  Combination of big games and titles, plays, style of play and stats Brady is incredible.

LT is arguably the best defensive player ever.  He was also hopped up on Cocaine and there are arguably better defensive players.   Reggie White was just as big and mean even at that time. Ronnie Lott was also a fantastic defender at that time.  LT was probably the best out of a great era of defenders.

Tom Brady is the greatest player ever to play the game of football.

Good point.  Fixed in the original.  Added the great Gebrselassie as well.

I don't know how anyone can say Federer best Tennis player. There are many that have been better than him including the current guy that he can't beat in Djokovic.

How about one of the softest tennis players = Federer
softest basketball player = Olynyk
