Title: One silver lining: Sullinger just keeps improving.
Post by: ctrey on January 02, 2013, 02:04:13 AM
Nine points and six and a half boards a game in the last five games. He continues to improve in nearly every game. This guy is proving to be a sick rebounder. Like so sick he will lead the league in rebounding one day. Additionally he has a great looking shot. He will score like crazy once they start running some pick and pops for him. I honestly think he will eventually have solid three point range. Now the fouling thing continues but that will get better. (Yeah, there is no pre-conceived bias among refs in the NBA)

Doc seems to always praise his hustle and repeatedly mentions how he plays the right way. I doubt he is one of the players who are not taking the losing seriously. The fact that Doc always has a good word about him bodes well.

I know they want to play big and move KG back to the four but I think Sullinger is just going to keep getting more minutes. He is clearly making Bass tradeable.

I like Bass a lot. I think he earns his contract and brings it hard every single game... can't ask for more... but man, Sully gives me tingles right now. No one in "real life" is on board yet, but I approve this post and hope to see that some others are feeling similarly :)

Yup. Its good to see Sully keep on improving every game.

But Bass now keeps on sucking every game - a polar opposite of Sully

Agree. Bass does that. Sully seems to do that too. Trade or no, team doing good or bad, I sure appreciate this.

And I've been saying this from the start. Sully has been improving and almost at a constant rate too. It's like one possession he makes a mistake and immediately in the next one he fixes it.

He's still not in the shape he ideally should be in and loses out on the defensive end (according to Chris Webber) but he draws charges like nobody's business.

And, gotta throw Fab Melo's name in here. He seems to be kind of dumb but is really not. Probably is just because of the language barrier (his English really is not great). Just watch one of his recent games (even the "bad" one where he "only" got a few blocks and had some problem with bigs) and compare it to his summer league games.

Melo and Sully may be polar opposites (raw talent vs pure skill) but they both work hard and are learning really fast.

I would like to see Bass/Sully start against memphis. I know Doc wants size but seriously seeing collins on the floor makes me bash my head against the wall

But who wants Bass? What a mistake it was to trade big baby for him.

Sully and Davis while both a little undersized upfront in terms of length would of been two wicked pieces for our front court. Would of been a very smart duo out there

Glad to see the improvement.

Because we're going to have to trade him, and the higher his value the better.

Interesting that he's played so well with the starters--

"Sullinger continued to prove that he plays well with Boston's best players, specifically Rondo, Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett. The stats show Boston has considerable success when Sullinger shares a lineup with those three players. In just more than 34 minutes of floor time this season, the only lineup featuring all four players (Courtney Lee being the fifth) has outscored opponents by 18.6 points, according to lineup data logged by Basketball Reference."

--but of course Doc has gone infrequently with this statistically-best lineup.

Would be interesting if no big trades came through, to see a KG/Sully/Green/Bradley/Rondo lineup.  I mean, they all can score and they'd have to run some plays for somebody.

Still, my guess is he'll have to go in a big-man trade.

I think its just a matter of time before Sully is starting.  I think Doc is holding off on it, because he wants to make sure that Sully doesn't revert to his intermittent effort that he was showing earlier in the season.  But, now that the effort seems to be much more consistent (and the fouls seem to be dropping a bit as well), it might be time to pull the trigger.

I remember MANY here thought we got a steal when we traded bass for baby. I for one wasn't convinced then and even less convinced now. Bass is a one trick pony. If that elbow J isnt falling he's useless. He's looking worse and worse every game. At least baby hustles, took charges, grabbed rebounds and really could score. His issue was that he pouted. He would have outgrown that. I want bass outta here on the next thing smoking IF we can include him in any trades. Sully IS Da Man!

I still think we got a steal trading Bass for Baby.  Between the contract demands, and the attitude issues, Davis needed to go, and Bass provided a great replacement on short money, and he also provided a little more explosiveness, which the C's desperately needed.

Now that Bass is on a longterm deal, its not nearly as good, however, I still think he can be a very good player in the role he was meant for...that is, 8th man.

Bass is not a starter to me.  He has been because we are hurtin for true elite bigs on the front line.   Bass is good bench -role player.  And I like him a lot better than baby overall.

Bass 's main contribution is his one trick smooth medium jump shot.   When that is off ( as it has been) of late, then he is not skilled /gifted enough to make up for it in other ways.

Without his shot going down, Bass is a sub standard player to me .   Not very good defensively, poor BB IQ ,  and below average rebounder .

Sully should be playinfg, not Bass.  Sully's defense on quick guys is horrible.  But, he can shoot nearly as good as Bass, and works the boards 100X better. He makes better plays aroundthe rim, better passes and has better hands than BAss.

Thus he should start.

I know this isn't a Bass thread but.. Bass is what he has always been a solid bench big man who give a great jump shot and some athleticism. He is a below average rebounder and defender. That is why he is best coming off the bench.

Sully is showing gradual improvement. I stick to what i said when he was drafted. He will have a carlos boozer like career. If the Cs keep him around I expect him to grow into a 18pt 10rb starting PF. Like Boozer he will be at his best playing along side a mobile athletic defensive 5.

The good news is Sully's development allows us to trade Bass without blinking.

This is my thought too. Bass is a very likeble player and gives us another semi-above the rim type player. But sully can do everything that bass gives us plus rebound better.

However. Bass' trade value has to be very low at the moment. The only thing going for him is that teams know what he is going to bring to the team as he is a proven vet. If we could get a player that had a similar impact on the game that bass does only plays the center position, even that would be a huge improvement.

What in the world could possibly make you think Sullinger will lead the league in rebounding?  You can say he's a good rebounder, but please come back to Earth.  Way too much hyperbole for me.

The day Sullinger shows the skill that Ben Wallace, Dennis Rodman, Charles Barkley, and Bill Russell did you can try again.  That's how elite you have to be to even come close to leading the league in rebounding from 6'8"ish (and I think you know Sullinger will never be even 1/4th as athletic as those guys).  Can you name anyone else?

Kevin Love lead the league in rebounding two years ago.
Zach Randolph second in the league this year.
Reggie Evans has the top rebounding percentage in the league.
Nicola Vucevic just grabbed 29 rebounds in one game.
It's premature to think that Sullinger will lead the league in rebounding, but there have been plenty of people with his size and athleticism who have been great rebounders.
Elton Brand, Carlos Boozer, David West, Al Jefferson, Paul Millsap etc. have all put up impressive rebounding numbers at one point or another.

I don't think Sully will ever lead the league in rebounding in the C's system.  And that't not a bad thing.  He plays a lot more defense already, than a lot of the guys who just attack the boards.

It was a steal. It might have been a good idea to try and sign & trade him once they drafted Sullinger and decided to resign green. Or it might have made sense to just let him walk.

But they traded an expired BBD demanding a contract that Boston wouldn't give. They traded him for an expiring Bass who ended up in the starting lineup and key part of a playoff run that was very close to another finals appearance.

What they did after Bass expired, doesn't change the steal part. (And that's a pretty good contract they have on Bass. He very well may be a key asset in a trade, or be the asset that allows them to trade Sully.)

I hope I am wrong but looking at his rookie stats he doesn't project as a 20/10 or all star guy folks.   I want to be wrong on this but I think there is a lot of hometown bias on this thread.   His stats are barely better than Glen Davis as a rookie.

I think he does have a place in the league.   Cream always rises but I think some of these projections are homerists at best and delusional at the least.

He is improving. I like the way he's contributing and I hope it's a steady improvement.

I'm not asking for a 20/10 guy (although him being one would be fantastic), but if he could give us 14 ppg, 6-7 rebs, a block on 50% shooting, solid effort and defense I'd be so happy.

Also, I want him to grow, maybe 2 inches more? I mean the man can dream right? Paul George grew, here's hoping he does as well. I mean if he's 6'11", he'll be VERY useful.

I think he's guarensheeeed to be better than Davis. His post game alone should do that. I think his stats would be better if we started giving him post ups instead of Bass(turn around jumper) and Green(right handed dead down flip shot). I die a little inside everytime they are in the post.

David "my man" Lee. C'mon now, talk about 6'9" not so athletic guy but rebounds the heck of the ball. I think technique brings some. But more importantly, the desire. If he really wants to rebound, he'll go after every miss, assume every shot is a miss and positions himself. Fight for it. I see David Lee do this every game and granted, he maybe a little more athletic than Sully, he's not as athletic as some guys he goes against but he'll end up with 10-12 boards a night.

I think Sully can be that rebounder, if he has the desire and with that the technique comes in as well.

With these comparisons I expect Sully to develop into at least 15pt 10rb a game starter if he stay healthy and continues to develop. He could potentially surpass that 15pts a game if featured in an offense like boozer was but this isn't ideal.

It really is only a matter of time.  It's a trust thing.

There's times where you can see Rondo wants Sully to take a jumper and he'll hesitate.  And other times where he'll put up a jumper because he thinks he's supposed to hit from that distance, but it's not within the flow of the offense.

Once Doc and Rondo can trust Sully's decision making he'll start.  I trust Doc in being patient...something i lose a bit more of every time i see Bass get beat on a backdoor cut or missed rotation.  The man is made to be a 6th man.

Glad to see the improvement.

Because we're going to have to trade him, and the higher his value the better.

I think we really need to consider how good this guy can be. I really believe he can be Kevin Love 2.0 or close to it.
I think that's an extremely premature verdict, especially about a guy with physical issues who has not demonstrated that he can defend adequately and consistently in this league.

He looks to me like a 12 and 6 ceiling guy in this league, with work, improvement and extreme good fortune with his back, a problem that rarely yields good fortune in this league - hardly of Kevin Love's caliber.

all i can say is Sully the Bully. David West got punked tonight.

I don't think the kid realizes how strong he is even. He needs to be careful with fouls

He perfects that jump shot plus lowers his fat percentage another percentage or two, and we got another boozer in our hands.

He has been a huge factor the last two weeks.

I would love to see him vs Big Baby soon. That would be a fantastic matchup

What i appreciate about this kid the most is his motor. It looks like he really enjoys playing the game too

When you got a guy with a non stop motor, it doesn't matter if your winning by 20 or losing by 20, he will keep bringing it, like the team has been on a 10 game winning streak.

I hope we can see more offense from him eventually, but if not, its ok because he still helps your team win in other ways.

Another great game by Sully the Bully.

Anytime he is on the court, we are a plus team.

He has never been taken adv of inside yet and caused frustrations for alot of big vet guys he has faced.

Horford is no lightweight, and at times he was manhandling him.

Like i've stated a few times, can't wait to see him and baby go at it.

Who you guys think is stronger, BBD or Sully?

when he backed down Smith, then instead of shooting had a very nice pass out of the paint for an assist he really showed his iq. super impressive for a rookie

definitely. Like the way he cut to the middle today, received passes and made some nice baskets in. He always seems to make one or two key jump shots. A few good passes. No turnovers or mistakes (except when he fouled Williams).

Even the homer announcers for Atlanta , had high praise for Sully.

He plays like a vet most of the game.  his defense is getting better,  Not many rookies are ALL AROUND this good.

And WOW ...there I was wanting ROyce White  ::)

I don't even think he has scratched the surface folks.  His combine were bad and I bet he lifts with the team all the time now.  He could be like Karl Malone in physique if he sticks with it.

Sully was playing borderline elite defense out there for a good portion of this game, and I don't even need to mention his rebounding ability or his effort levels.

Offensively he's solid as well.

At the start of the season we were talking about Terry and Green as potential 6MOTY candidates, but if Sully keeps improving at this rate (and if Boston as a team keeping winning as they have the last two games) then Sully might get some consideration himself.

Has a rookie ever won 6MOTY?

Love the strength of Sully but the thing that really strikes me about the kid is his motor.

Just seems to keep going non-stop.

Sullinger is an above average rebounder, and he is only 20 years old and a rookie.

good points. the next area he needs to improve is consistency. he will get there too.

next, his jump shot is not consistent right now. he isnt shy about taking it, but isnt making it consistently yet. his form looks good and it looks as if he expects it to go in. these are good signs and remind me of AB last season.

with more playing time the game will slow down for sully and with reps and practice he will improve even more.

that the celtics got all of sully, AB, and rondo so late in the draft is amazing. if a draft were to be redone they all would go much higher i think.

He's 10/10 per 36 right now. Very solid numbers for a rookie playing meaningful minutes.

If he can get that up to 13/13 per 36 that would be something to be proud of.

Sullinger's been really good the past two nights on both ends.  I'm liking the strides he's making with his individual defense.  I don't think he has the lowpost scoring ability to be an all-star or anything but an above-average contributor whose physicality and smarts makes him a crowd and coaches favorite would be just fine.

He is playing as well as many of the Lottery picks.   Not headed for the D-League and improving some while learning on the fly.

I suspect a 20 year old is still getting pointers from his father and brothers as well as his coaches and teamates.

Like AB , Sully is alot of fun to watch .   He gets to rebounds that Big Baby just couldn't seem to grab.

Sully is really going to be a wiley player when he gets several years under his belt.

His offensive game is just in the early stages. Right now though , he is making alot of key rebounds with his limited minutes.
