I think the Sox should follow Houston's lead and fire Cora, once MLB hands out its punishment. The Sox need to cut the crap with all the techno-espionage.

Looks like Sox will need a new manager. Better go start looking before Houston picks up the best guy available.

MLB has begun their investigation into the #Redsox today, and Alex Cora likely will be suspended at least one year by the time it concludes.

Things just keep getting better for the Sox.  Cost cutting owner, likely to lose the signature star of the team, and now their most recent WS is likely tainted by cheating and the manager is probably going to get suspended.

We are also probably going to lose two firsts and two seconds, like Houston.

The rebuild should be fun.

So is there definitive proof about how seriously the Sox went about their 'cheating' or is it just assumed at this point since Cora was the orchestrator of the Astros scandal? I ask this because there is lots of information about the Astros out there, but very little on the Sox. I assume it's because the MLB has finished its investigation into Houston, but not the Sox.

Hopefully it's not as egregious as Houston. I mean, I couldn't care less about Cora - he is a sitting duck right now and is a proven cheater (and the Sox absolutely blew last year) - but I am not really in the mood to lose our 1st and 2nd round draft picks the next two years. Boston sports teams don't really need another black cloud of cheating either...although this one seems to be the only legitimate one.

the draft picks would have zero impact on the sox pitching for the next 3 to 4 years. this is baseball so draft picks dont start in with the big league club for years.

I believe Gandhi is the only person who knew about real democracy — not democracy as the right to go and buy what you want, but democracy as the responsibility to be accountable to everyone around you. Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

From a person that doesn't watch that much baseball, how come the MLB doesn't have some kind of mic similar to NFL so the pitching coach can just let the pitcher know the pitch to throw instead of relying on signals? Just wondering if there's a reason something like it hasn't been implemented.

Typically the pitch call is determined by the pitcher and catcher.  Catcher calls the pitch and pitcher can either agree or shake home off.  Radio communication probably wouldn’t help because the hitter would hear the catcher call the pitch.

I see, but who's on the sideline doing all the signals? Is that for the pitcher or for the catcher?

Depending on the manager and the catcher either the catcher is entrusted to call the game themselves based on pre game coaching and game planning of batters as well as a session of talking with the starting pitcher or the manager or a coach signals the pitches in to the catcher who then signals to the pitcher.

Signaling from the dugout to the fielders is done for positioning and how a batter might be pitched. For instance, if a batter is going to be pitched inside, a signal would be sent out to the fielders so they know what is the most likely way to move their position just prior to the pitch.

Baseball will not allow technical devices for communication between coaches and players on the field. It would lead to all sorts of other ways to cheat.

Thanks. That makes sense. I just seems interesting reading about it how primitive the signals and signal catching has been. What was the Astros doing? Banging the drums loud?

With a bunch of technology the Astros were able to steal signs of what pitch was coming but with no runner on 2nd base, needed a way to signal to the hitter what was coming. So ahead of time they determined which pitch in which area of the plate the batter would most want and so if there was no runner on 2nd to signal to the batter what was coming, Houston had the idea just to make a noise the batter could hear and if the batter heard that sound, he knew what was coming. Hence, the banging of drums or barrels or whatever.

I simply cannot believe how these teams thought they wouldn’t get caught. In this day and age (with social media and video analysis), it’s very hard to get away with stuff like this.

Yankees made claims about both the Astros and the Sox, so they knew it was happening. You’d think they would stop doing it, knowing someone was on to them.

I don’t see how how an owner (the Astros today, and presumably the Red Sox soon) can admit guilt, fire the ones in charge, and then say their title isn’t tainted. They went 0-3 in Yankee Stadium that ALCS, but 4-0 at home. Not much of a stretch to think without their unfair signal-stealing at home, they don’t reach the World Series.

Whatever punishment Cora gets, probably isn’t enough.
