Title: NBA 2k14?
Post by: bdm860 on October 03, 2013, 12:07:31 PM
Kind of surprised I haven’t heard anything about this from anybody here yet.  What’s the deal, everybody too busy with GTA V?  Waiting for it on the PS4/XBox One?

Anybody get it, anybody played it?  What are the thoughts on it?

I’m not a guy who goes out and buys the yearly entry to the sports series every year, and I buy very few games “brand new” at the starting $60 price.  Was thinking about getting this one though as it’s been a few years since I bought my last basketball game (2K11).  Just wondering people’s thoughts/opinions on it.

It's a weird spot for me.  I like these games on PC, which is a weird set up but I love it.  They release it at half price knowing all the multiplayer stuff is totally broken and doesn't work, but it's cool with me because I only play by myself and you can use some mods that add in different players and teams, which is really cool.

And my PC is past the power of the new consoles coming out, so that's cool.  But instead of giving PC players the next gen version, they instead are just giving them the current one, so I'm probably sitting this one out, until maybe I get a new console later on.

From what I hear, the main addition is more refinement on the dribble controls, which apparently allow for a much more fluid ball handing which sounds a little crazy to me as I already find it pretty great, but that's good.

The snippet they've shown of the next gen has the graphical jump looking really great, so that's the version to hold out for if you can, from what I've seen.

But if you haven't played one since 2K11, you would jump into this one and love it.  I thought last years game was really great.  The control and animation was greatly improved since 2K11.

I think it has a lot to do with the next gen consoles.

Understandably, it kind of seems like the 2k team was a little divided gearing up to make their game for the ps4/xbox 1 and keeping the franchise running fluidly on the current stuff. Because of it, you're not seeing a huge difference in gameplay: So far the biggest changes seem to be fluidity of animations (especially in passing) and the ability to block a dunk.

To me, I've gotten so much out of the 2k franchise so I certainly plan on getting it, but can't help but be less excited about it than in year's past.

waiting for the ps4 to come out in which 2k14 will be my first game to get. I can't wait cuz all my friends already have it

not to mention, I'll probably be the unlucky one and have to wait for restock  :-\

Yup, same here. I sold my PS3 last month to get whatever I could for it but really missing out on 2k14 and GTA V. There was no way I was going to get these games on PS3 though for what a month and two weeks rental. Ah well PS4 should be worth the wait in the end can't wait.  8)

It's pretty cool, they changed the dribbling, but it you'll get used to it quick.
It's much more fluid. Just like with every nba2k games, its only slightly better than the last.

I played a couple of quick games using the Celtics.
Faverani and Pressey are not in the game, yet. Hopefully they put them in the next roster update.
Jeff Green is underrated in the game. His rating is 80 with a couple of signature skills, he should be at least around 84 or 85 in my opinion. He's slow and can't dribble. They need to change that.
Sully grabs every rebound in sight.
Kelly Olynyk has an awkward shot. Lol.
I played Crawford on 1 and Brooks on the 2 spot, and I went on a 11 to nothing scoring run. It was fun. Those guys can score from anywhere.

But yeah over all its a good game, not much improvement from 2k13, but I'm also waiting for the next gen

I'm keeping the PS3 so I can use it as a blu-ray player exclusively and PS4 just for gaming. But yea, I cannot wait for the PS4 to come out but probably won't be able to get it until December.

I hope Darksiders III comes out for the PS4 soon as well. I don't play much games but sports games, a selected amount of action rpgs like God of War/Darksiders/Dante's Inferno

I downloaded the PC version.

It's pretty good.  Not too much different than 2k13, but there are some small changes, as usual.  I have no interest at all in the LeBron-specific mode.

So far I've played as the Celtics against the Bucks, Sixers, Suns, and Magic.  I had a full, healthy roster (minus Pressey and Faverani, who aren't in the game yet).

My impressions: the Celtics seemed better than the Magic, though not by much.  The Bucks, Sixers, and Suns all seemed better than the Cs, to me.

Without Rondo, it wouldn't even be close.  Celtics would be the worst team in the game.  In real life, I imagine the same will hold true.

On the bright side, I had no trouble scoring with MarShon Brooks or Kelly Olynyk.  I was getting 8-12 points in 10 minutes or so with each of those guys coming off the bench.

Gerald Wallace is pretty useful, too, and Jeff Green had some pretty clutch moments for me down the stretch in my win over the Magic.

I have to disagree with you here.  He plays pretty much like Jeff Green when I use him.  You can't try to do anything spectacular, but if you you don't force it with him and find him in advantageous spots, you can score 15-20 points with him.  He's not a go-to guy, but he can take advantage of smaller defenders in the post or slower guys on the perimeter.

Rondo is similar; it's impossible to score much with Rondo if you actually try to find scoring opportunities for him.  If you only try to score with Rondo when the defense breaks down or when transition opportunities are there, though, you can score 10-15 points with Rondo without much trouble.

I don't think they did a very good job replicating Olynyk's shot, but I've found he's a pretty useful scorer from mid-range or finishing open layups inside.  He also has a bit of a post-game.  They gave him a pretty bad 3 point rating, though; he can't space the floor much.

In last years game I improve Jeff and Avery.

Jeff's three point rating is too low, he has basically no handle, and his defense is too low, considering I think he is a pretty strong man defender now and when he heated up last year, he also blocked like a shot a game.  He also has a pretty low dunk rating too.

And Avery's defense was pretty low, which I find to be kind of crazy as he is one of the very best perimeter defenders in the league.  But I love him in the game either way because for some reason I gel with his shot so well I shoot like 90 percent from three point land.

That like LaMarcus Aldridge territory. Jeff Green ain't that good.

Bigger players are always better around the same rating (obviously).  Marc Gasol is like an 83-4 and I find him rather accurate (though a bit underrated in last years game).

Though I like Jeff around 82-3 and find him very effective still.

Guys, when you look at the overall rating, the first question to ask is whether or not, when you actually use that player in-game, they play like you'd expect.

In general, I find that players play the way they're supposed to, even if the overall rating seems off.

Jordan Crawford, for example, is a 76, but he's useless.  Just like in real life.

I still play 2k13, mainly because I'm going to miss that awkward 3point shot animation of Pierce. And like hell I'm playing as the nets.

Lol, Ya I scored 35 points with Jeff Green on Hall of fame.
I just posted up a lot and hit corner 3's.

I will hold off until the gaming community releases a draft class for this year and the next.

It's not fun for me playing Assoc. Mode without the authentic (sort off) draft classes.

So no NBA 2K14 for me, not yet. Beyond: Two Souls first.

So I caved and bought it, here's my thoughts:

The improvements remind me of the year that Kobe was on the cover (when they stopped letting you just huck the ball from side to side) in that the 'fluidity' improvements might sound subtle, but they're actually pretty big upgrades to gameplay.

Not getting 'stuck' after a physical contact make guys like Josh Smith and Dwight Howard more effective. This year on a break if J-Smoothe gets the ball in transition and a smaller guys in the way, he more or less powers his way to the basket. In year's past, you'd get that awkward animation when he gets hit further from the basket and obviously doesn't hit the shot. Same with Howard: His post moves, realistically, aren't all that good - but you can definitely use his size and speed on the block to get him easy hoops.

Another positive I noticed is that 3's seem to be a lot less easy. I couldn't do that old trick where you just push the ball up with the pg and hit a wing at the elbow. Even good three point shooters need to be closer to the line, and generally more in rhythm. Feels like they made a conscious effort to have a more balanced approach to offense.

There are a few things I hate: It might be one of those things where it just takes time, but I freaking hate the new post system controls. In my first game it legit took me like 15 attempts to get either Drummond or Monroe to take a shot attempt. And  even after I did, it wasn't very pretty. I liked 2k13's post system a lot: Thought it was easy enough, while allowing creativity. So far, this one just stinks.

Also, they changed the pick and roll button to the 'b' button on 360 (i'm sure it'll be circle for ps3) which might seem minor, but to me it's super obnoxious. Holding the LB and operating pick system always felt fluid, this is really awkward (and I don't htink just because it's 'new', more to do with what your fingers have to do).

Right now I'm maybe considering getting the PC version (since it's only $30).  Getting one of the new consoles has become something I actually might do now.  If 2k14 is really good it could win me over.

Holding B is actually how it used to work.  They changed it to LB, now they've changed it back.

I agree about the contact changes really helping the flow of the game.

Similar to Dwight Howard, I've been able to bully my way inside with guys like Derrick Favors much more effectively.  In that past, it was much harder to score in realistic ways with those guys.

I've also found that it's much easier to score with guards by driving inside without having to abuse the Eurostep layup (which is harder to do now, anyway).

I bought it too, here's my experience (though granted my previous experience was with 2k11):

Playing MyCareer, got drafted by the Thunder at 12.  Now when I played in 2k11, I thought the guards tended to be really under-utilized, they never really attacked and didn't have many plays called for them. (Though maybe it was just the teams I played on and how I played).

Now it seems like the opposite, the guards are over utilized and attack too much (though again maybe it's just the team I'm on and how I play, I do have Westbrook).

My guy is a PF, not getting a lot of shots or any plays called for me yet.  Westbrook and Lamb are averaging 17+ FGA per game, while Durant is averaging only about 10.  Two of the worst examples recently, Durant went 3-3 one game, and 1-4 another, while Westbrook and Lamb both took around 20 shots each game.  Durant routinely finishes like 4th or worse in scoring on the team.  Last 5 games, Durant scored over 11 just once.

People told me they  made big improvements in the AI (especially since 2k11), so I'm disappointed by this. Is it just my team, or how I'm playing, or is this how the AI is overall?

I think it's the fact that you're playing with the Thunder, BDM.

The game sometimes exaggerates the truth, so I'm not really surprised to hear that Russell Westbrook is taking more shots than Kevin Durant and they're playing too much on the perimeter, because, well, that's what the Thunder do.

Actually, I heard there's an upgrade program.  Buy the ps3 version, and you can update to the ps4 version for only $10 more.  I haven't looked into it, because I have no plans to get a ps4 anytime soon, but here's some links:

UK site says 2k14 is eligible and for £9.99 (http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2013/09/19/how-to-upgrade-select-ps3-games-to-ps4-version/)

But US site doesn't mention 2k14, but still says you can upgrade certain games for $9.99 (http://blog.us.playstation.com/2013/09/19/how-to-upgrade-select-ps3-games-to-their-ps4-versions/)

Worth looking into I would think if you want the best of both worlds.

I'm very very very cheap

buy for 60 now? upgrade to ps4 edition for $10...I end up paying 70

I'm patient, just one more month (if I am lucky), or two months (reasonable time)

I'm just playing starcraft II with my buddy after work, and using my ps3 as my entertainment box (netflix/blu ray player)

-85-86 Sixers missing Chuck

etc.

Played 5 games in a Celtics association. Lost 2 and Won 3. I like how it plays, although I still make a lot of TOs (I have about 4.5 TOPG with Rondo, but also 11APG).

The Celtics squad is rather fun to play with. I put both Sullinger and Humphries in my starting lineup (I started KO the first game, but changed it after Hump did a lot better in the game) and they go well together. Both are great rebounders. Sully is at 9 RBG with probably more than 3 ORPG, and Humphries is at almost 10 RBPG. Both already had a 15 rebounds game.

I upped Jeff Green's ball handling ability a little bit, because it was impossible for me to drive to the basket without him losing the ball. Now he's about 17PPG, and Sully is the second highest scorer on the team.

I get quiet a lot of double doubles with this team. Last game against the Jazz:

Rondo: 15 pts, 13 ast (also 8 turnovers :s)
Sully: 25 pts (career high), 11 rebs
Humphries: 13 pts, 15 rebs

It took me a while to get used to the new controls though. It still happens that I accidentally pass the ball during a fast break, when I actually want to dunk it :/

Overall I think the game is good, but it's more of a patch to 2k13 than an entirely new game I think. There are still some sloppy bugs from last year in the game as well:

- rotations reset when you start a new association, so you don't get the rotations from the roster
- sometimes the announcers talk about substitutions from the wrong team (e.g. "Coming into the game: Gerald Wallace and Rajon Rondo for the Toronto Raptors")

Started playing the game, Assoc. Mode.

Simming the first season. Traded Bass and a pick for Asik.

Traded Jeff Green and Crash for Rudy Gay and Austin Daye.

Traded Avery Bradley to Charlotte for a pick and and McRoberts. Also Traded Marshon Brooks and Jordan Crawford to Utah for Brandon Rush and Jeremy Evans.

Did not make the Playoffs, went to the draft with three 1st rounders. Traded two of them along with KO and Asik for Aldridge. They bit. (LOL)

Signed Andy Varejao for MLE. Drafted Doug McDermott

My 2014 Celtics lineup coming in.

Rondo, Lee, Gay, Aldridge, Varejao with Rush, McDermott, Olynyk and Josh McRoberts.

No backup PG though. LOL.

Why does Phil Pressey and Vitor Faverani not even look like themselves?

Anyways before the roster update, I've did some interesting changes. Traded Jeff Green, Sullinger, Brandon Bass for Matt Bonner, Kawhi Leonard, Boris Diaw.

With one first round pick and a second one I got Ricky Ledo. Traded Humphries, for Perkins and Adams with the addition of another first round pick. Picked up Terrence Williams from FA, made him my sixth man, SG/SF, and then grabbed Kendall Marshall too.

Traded Perkins for Gobert, and I think someone else.

My roster was basically Rondo, Bradley, Leonard, KO, and Steven Adams.

I don't exactly remember what I did. In the off season is where I made most of my splash. I had about 19-21 mil in cap space.

Retained Bradley/Leonard with qualifying offers. Picked up Kobe/Isiah Thomas/Michael Beasley, Anderson Varejao, and Lance Stephenson.

Traded Kobe/Bradley/Anderson Varejao after it changed into counter offer for James Harden. Traded Isiah Thomas, KO, and Courtney Lee for Larry Sanders. Michael Beasley and someone else I don't remember for Faried.

I did a few more roster changes, and made some smart trades. I also abused the FA agent pool by putting them on reserve with chemistry on. They would get mad due to not being played at all, but I didn't care. I don't remember who I picked up, but I had 3 young prospects with one and half stars. I packaged them, and someone else to grab Chandler Parsons along with Franciso Garcia who was heated so it made it an easier trade. Picked up Ish Smith, and then traded him for Kenyon Martin.

Eventually it came down to this

PG Rondo, SG Harden, SF Leonard, PF Faried, and C Sanders.

PG Marshall/T-Will
SG Ricky Ledo/T-Will
SF T-Will/Parsons
PF Parsons/Martin
C Adams/Gobert

So far on Hall of Famer, I'm 37-9. I enjoy playing games, and at times the only losses were against a re-vamped OKC/and Bobcats which surprisingly got LBJ, and John Wall lol.

I don't know, the preorder already killed my wallet cuz the only bundle left was the Killzone with PS plus membership. And 2k is a must have...

I practically gave up on Live since 2k came out with the myplayer mode, I was quite disappointed in 2k13's myplayer mode, my favorite was 2k11/2k12's my player mode, physics was so much better. You can NEVER block a dunk in 2k13 and players run through you. Not to mention, recovery time sucks so I end up missing rebounds

I have high hopes for 2k14 for my ps4 though

Yeah its going to be sick! Have you ever seen the NBA Live ones? They look somewhat solid.

I'm jealous man!  Enjoy.  It has tested my resolve to buy a system.

The MyPlayer this year is hopefully better.  From what I saw it has a new kind of story mode to it which looks really goofy but honestly I could see it being hilarious.  It looks like an extension of how they handle the post game press conference stuff which to me has always been so bizarre (in how the responses are written and delivered) that I have loved it.

The pick and roll button used to be B.  The one with KG, 2K9?

By the way, if any of you get the next gen version, if you could let me know if all the classic players and teams are carried over I would really appreciate it.  I know some are but I'm hoping all the ones from last years game are still there.

Yeah, MyGM is top notch.  It's the deepest franchise mode I've seen, even deeper than Madden used to be.

It looks like franchise mode and an owner mode all rolled into one.  It has those crazy features Madden used to have like setting concession stand prices.  And then it has some kind of dialogue system to talk with players and stuff that looks kind of like an RPG.

so, 2k14...I really like how they upgraded the myplayer mode overall this year. The graphics are amazing on the ps4. Everything looks realistic, including my own player!! Though I was disappointed you don't have much options on the ps4 to customize your player. There's only like 3 heads you can really choose that looks like an Asian. One looks like an Asian gangster, the other two just looks retarded

As for the gameplay...love the physics of the game and how realistic it is this time. Everything is easier to upgrade, started as a 65 player and now I'm 71...and that's just the span of 10 games.

I was drafted by the Pistons at 8 even though I want to be with the Celtics and I have yet to request a trade (for some odd reason I cannot request yet). Surprise surprise!, Josh Smith is my mentor and best friend and Chauncy Billups is the bully.

I got into a fight with him at practice where the coach had to step in...thought this was pretty cool. 2k really went out of their way to make this as realistic as possible and you have full control of your character's personality and fate in the league. I don't know why, but I am always p---ed off in the league. Constantly starting trouble with everyone haha

Best thing was, I dropped 44 pts and 12 rebounds on Lebron

Wait wait wait wait.

So in 2k14, only in next-gen consoles, there's a mentor thing?

And not on the 360 or PS3?

Oh that is a load of bull crap right there. Hol-ly crap.

well it's not really a mentoring thing...one game I was 2-8 from the free throw line and Josh Smith (yes I know, of all people), came to me and helped me work on my free throws...then I had an off night shooting, he also worked with me on that...

Chauncy Billups on the other hand did nothing but trying to ruin my career. Had me party with the team and was late for practice (the coach yelled at me and cut my minutes because of that), made me carry his luggage and started a fight in practice...

overall, the myplayer mode was AWESOME lol

Here's something that outright smells for the Next Gen -

MyGM is single player only, and there's no other mode that has a fantasy draft. So you can not do a fantasy draft with multiple people, because you can't draft one team and have multiple players play using that team, nor draft multiple teams to let you go head to head.

No big deal, just literally my favorite things to do in 2k.

I got fired after 2 seasons with the Celtics - first season I made playoff as 8th seed, got swept

2nd season I signed Kevin Love (max), Rondo (discount), Pierce (MLE)

4th seed - swept in first round

3rd season - fired :-p
