What a powerful voice she had, and what a sensitive spirit.

I don't think she was able to get over her teenage son's suicide.  Tragedy upon tragedy.

You're definitely right, sadly.

Sinéad O'Connor's last post on social media gave fans insight into her emotional struggles since her son Shane died by suicide at 17 in 2022.

In a tweet on July 17 [2023] from a now-deleted Twitter account she started, O'Connor — who died aged 56 on Wednesday — wrote, "Been living as undead night creature since. He was the love of my life, the lamp of my soul. We were one soul in two halves. He was the only person who ever loved me unconditionally. I am lost in the bardo without him."

Yeah...  She had a history of bi-polar and depression, and she'd attempted suicide even before her son's death.  She was a very mentally complex woman.  Her circumstances remind me of another great Irish singer, Dolores O'Riordan.  I listened to so much of both of their music in the 90s.  I even wrote a research paper on the evolution of Irish folk music into contemporary rock in which both Sinead O'Connor and The Cranberries were featured.

Even among the famous and wealthy, their lives aren't always enviable.

Brave lady. RIP

Taking on the Pope on SNL was incredibly brave. She took on the machine and got blasted in the press. One of the more memorable live TV moments in my life.

she was a wonderful talent, brave, and had a hard, difficult life. sorry we have lost her.

what strikes me about the stories of her passing is the lack of coverage of her conversion to islam a few years ago. a decision such as this was a key moment in her, or any one's, life and was part of who she had become.

RIP.
I believe Gandhi is the only person who knew about real democracy — not democracy as the right to go and buy what you want, but democracy as the responsibility to be accountable to everyone around you. Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

Yeah, not surprisingly, such a conversion isn't so hot in 'Merica.

Sad life - RIP

Gotta be honest and to each his own, but not a fan of her music in the slightest.  Her look and persona made her more famous (or infamous) than her musical output - which amounted to 1 top 40 song in the US (her number 1 hit Nothing Compares 2U, written by Prince).

I think more recently she went to a few more therapists, and her diagnoses were actually Complex PTSD and Borderline Personality Disorder - a very tough bundle.

That paper sounds interesting, as someone who loves Irish folk. RIP.

Didn’t know about all of her struggles. Sad. She was very talented and brave.

Her career was basically over after Saturday Night Live for taking a stand at a time where that wasn’t acceptable. Had she done the same thing now, she’d be a hero.

Taking on the Pope on SNL was incredibly brave. She took on the machine and got blasted in the press. One of the more memorable live TV moments in my life.

That moment was right up there with Jesse Jackson reading Cat in The Hat, Fear on haloween, Elvis singing Radio, Radio, and Bowie in a dress.
