You pay guys like Tatum whatever the CBA allows you to pay them.  Full stop.

Double Stamp, no backies, no erasies!

People forget he's 22, he still has a way to go, the only playiff mentor is Hayward? So everyone is really learning what it takes. But he was hurt, and still was one of the best players on the floor. His assists were getting really good and if he's constant with that it will make scoring easier. DA needs to get some shooters to help him though. Build around Tatum, Brown and Smart, everyone else are role players at this point. Get Hayward to sign a 4 year 80mill contract, and try to move Kemba for Some thing like Adams and Schorder. Not necessarily them, but either a solid PG that can come off the bench if you start Smart, or start them selves, and a Big that can bang a bit more against some of these bigs.

I actually agree with him if the supermax means we'll be paying 40-50 million a year for Tatum - that's Giannis/LeBron/Davis money.

As has been mentioned multiple times, Tatum isn't eligible for a supermax contract.  The most he could get is a 30% Max contract which would start at ~33M per year.

Not until after the current contract extension we're talking about. Per the Rose Rule he will be eligible for 30% of the salary cap, not 35%. I think $32m is the kind of salary

Then I don't see any problem with paying him that amount

If I was Tatum I wouldn't accept anything less than the supermax. If Ainge didn't give it, I'd leave.

Tatum is a supermax player everywhere else in the league -- would be considered a supermax level player by every other team in the league.

If my team (Boston), didn't view me that same way that others would. I'd take it as a huge insult.

Ainge can play hardball if he likes but how successful he is with it will depend on Tatum and Tatum's ego. If it was me, it would stop me from re-signing with the Celtics.

I think he gets it. Ainge isn't going to argue. He's potentially a generational player, he's only 22, has been to 2 ECFs, and has improved every year. He became a better passer in the playoffs having to make up for Gordon's absence. I think you'd be crazy to not want to lock him up for the purpose of nickel and diming him.
Any odd typos are because I suck at typing on an iPhone :D

I mean, Boston can’t offer Tatum the Supermax right now so I’m not sure why that keeps getting brought up.

But Tatum absolutely deserves a max rookie extension and will, deservingly, get it from us.

Yep. All NBA in his 3rd season. He's 22. Play him whatever and work out the rest later.

Based on making All-NBA this season, he qualifies for a "designated rookie extension", which gives him an extra 5% of the cap on his max (30% vs. 25%). This is the same rule and same criteria as the "supermax" (which lets you get 35% instead of 30%), so it's not surprising if the term is used interchangably
I'm bitter.

In a heartbeat.

Imo, he's already the best small-ball 4 in the NBA (given that Bron ain't playing the 4 for the Lakers).
