Pretty self-explanatory topic. I obviously expect Hayward to continue improving as this season progresses. He also seems content coming off the bench as of now.

However, I do wonder if part of his “lack of killer instinct” stems from his move to the bench. Do you think he’ll ever go back to the starting lineup? How about next year?

I'm not sure about this year, but in the long run I am confident he will.

He's the sacrificial lamb for this season in that a) between Tatum, Brown, Morris and him he has the most all-round skillset with scoring, facilitating and rebounding to make the biggest impact with the second unit; b) he's a pretty relaxed guy who doesn't (won't) outwardly pout because he was told to come off the bench; and c) he has a long relationship with Brad which could mean that Brad could use that relationship to ask Hayward to sacrifice more. In any case Brad has him finishing tight games more often than not, unless (like vs Toronto) the matchups favor other players.

Assuming the team fails to make a deep playoff run and some players are shipped out for a big name, I think you'll be seeing him start next year.

I think he probably has one more shot at being a starter before his career begins the Wally Szczerbiak memorial tailspin.

Do you mean the 30 year old Wally who Hayward is already better than while clearly only being 70-80%?

His numbers are actually a bit better than that, but they're still incomparable, because Wally's timeline is completely different to Hayward's.

Szcerbiak played 28 games in 03-04 averaging 22MPG. His numbers that year were roughly 10/3/1.
The next season, he went on to average 15.5/4/2.5 predominantly off the bench as well, however he averaged comfortably over 30MPG.
The next season he went back to the high 30MPG fringe All-Star level player he had been before Flip benched him.

Comparing Hayward right now to that Wally makes absolutely no sense. You're comparing a guy who had suffered a serious injury and had 2 seasons of working his way back into shape to a guy who is still in the process of getting back into shape.

What you really should be comparing is the Szcerbiak who came off the bench post-injury to the Hayward we have now, but that doesn't fit your Hayward-bashing agenda so you'll continue to ignore all context

Yes TP, I'm fully on board with this idea. The Celtics should strive to get an allround rotation without significant weaknesses.

Agree. Just got to sell it to the players that it's like football, whoever starts the game on the field won't necessarily be the ones who stay there during crunch time. Easier said than done as probably 99% of players see starting >>> on the bench. All Stars are selected from the starting players, as a All-NBA teams. In my opinion it's more the players who are consistently on the court during crunch time that tells you who the top players on the team are.

whatever happens, for now I'd like Stevens to give the 2nd unit key to Hayward for ball handling instead of Rozier

A healthy Hayward, back too 100% is a superior passer, playmaker, ball handler, defender, with a better BB IQ than Brown, Morris or Tatum at this point. It all depends on how the recovery goes. I think too many Celtic fans forgot how talented this guy was.

Yes. It's a role that is suited to his talents; the starting unit can play off and through veterans Irving and Horford, while the 2nd unit plays through Hayward.  Rozier seems to want out so bad anyway, and he lacks the leadership ability Hayward brings to add stability off the bench.

i don't know if he wants out badly but Rozier seemed better off as a scorer. I just can't stand watching him pound the ball with no movement going for the iso almost 10/10 times and then dishing it out totally last minute. If he wants to be a scorer so be it, but let him play off of Hayward in the second unit. I see him as a total offensive black hole
