I personally think that he is using wrestling/Hollywood as leverage, as he should. Despite his injury history, he is the best TE in the game. He should be paid like one (same for Brady, but that's an entirely different story). I know that Gronk's family has been involved in the reporting of injuries. If I were his dad, I would tell him to milk every last dime out of the Patriots, or walk. The hits that he takes are likely to negatively affect his life after football.
If you were Gronk, would you come back as is, or would you threaten to head to Hollywood until paid a salary commensurate with his talent?
I personally would try to get as much $, and I'd still consider walking, regardless of money. It cannot be fun to consistently put yourself out as a defenseless target for some safety/linebacker to potentially injure you.

Agree with your thoughts. Think that it is primarily a plot to get some more coin, but also given his injury history, he could want to hang the cleats up sooner than later. These circumstances give him some pretty solid negotiating leverage. The random incentives the Patriots added into his contract prior to last season make a ton more sense now upon hearing all of these stories the last few weeks.

It depends on how big the salary gap is, how much money he has saved, etc.
He’s got back problems and now brain trauma. If he can afford to do so, I’d say walk.

There have been rumors that Gronk has been prudent with his game checks. I would assume that he has made enough money in his career to retire comfortably (as a normal person, not as a celebrity). Even if he bombs as an actor, he should still collectively make north of $5m in appearances, etc. I don't think that money is a big issue for Gronk anymore.
The humane side of me wants Gronk to retire.
The Patriots fan in me wants Gronk to play 10 more years.
I'm not sure if I like the Patriots or humanity more at this point.

It all really depends on how he feels physically. If I was him and I still felt pretty good, I would come back and bank more cash. The acting, WWE, etc. will all still be there a year or two from now. No reason to go into that field now and give up the football which won't be there forever.

Regardless of the cash, it must not be a good feeling for Gronk if he thinks the Pats are nickeling and diming him. Esp. after he has laid it out all out there for old rich guys like Kraft and Belichick.
Belichick makes $7.5m a year, putting him in 2nd behind Sean Payton ($8m). I wonder if Bill would be willing to make below his market value like some of his players. Would he stick around for $3-4m per year? I'm not sure.

If I were Gronk I'd retire.
However, if I were Gronk, I would have never made it this far, because I would have been toast after my first back injury.

I'm not sure how much of it is nickel & diming. Is Gronk under market value? For sure. However, the Pats & everyone else is playing under a hard cap system which makes things much more difficult from a management standpoint. The team has to make some tough calls when it comes to player contracts/valuation. Gronk just restructured last May where incentives could lead to him being the highest paid TE in the game. He's not exactly criminally underpaid if you strictly go by position. His agent & he kinda knew what they were getting into, right?
That being said, he's in a good place. He could retire & be fine. Or he could keep playing and do it at a high level and certainly cement his legacy as the greatest TE in NFL history (which he is, arguably, already). The selfish me wants him to play 2-3 more years & retire with Brady. But I certainly understand the health concerns. You're seeing a lot of neurological stuff coming out now which illustrates how dangerous of a game it really is.
-
If he is considering retirement for health reasons, the WWE is not a good alternative then.
Fake it may be, but th injuries those guys get are real. They have a worse, albeit far less documented, CTE history than th NFL
Same goes for spine injuries

I'd imagine that Gronk would be more viewed as a celebrity vs a regular wrestler in the WWE. I'd be shocked if he was doing the most aggressive wrestling moves.
Also, I think he would do appearances. I don't see him as a regular participant.
Re: legacy- I'm not sure that it is all that important. He has a SB ring, putting him ahead of To-Go and Gates. He will have to play for a while to get the counting stats, but I'm not sure that longevity is the prize that he is looking for.
I think Gronk has been the most dangerous TE in any given situation in NFL history. That prob. won't change, regardless of how many more games he plays.

Though a company like the WWE has done more to limit the chance of that happening then the NFL could. They have outlawed many of the move sets that lead to a greater chance of that happening (chairshots to the head, piledrivers, diving head butts)
At the same time, they could use him in role that limits his body to exposure to more damage.
But if his body is beat up, retiring is probably a good idea for quality of life going forward.

the fact that Bill isn't the highest paid coach, means he is taking below market value.

The Gronkowski family has several business interests. There was an article in the Boston Business Journal on this about a year ago. Between the 5 brothers and the dad they're either running or partners in something like 15 different businesses. And this is well before the WWE thing.
He doesn't need to play football.

Where did you get this number?
The've never released details and speculation seems to be he is making upwards of 10 million. Also, Gruden is making 10 mil a year.
Edit: Ahh, I found the source. This data is from 2013 at the very latest and could be even older. There's no way he's still coaching for 7.5mil.
Edit2: This source is from 2012. Not exactly reliable for 2018 info.

Worth noting it's not a fact as far as I can tell.

Yeah, you're right. I think this was an old stat from Forbes. Belichick is most likely making more. He might make more than Gronk.
My point isn't to say that Belichick is overpaid, but rather point out that neither Kraft nor Belichick are taking a hometown discount. They are both compensated handsomely.
Even if I think Gronk makes a ton of money, it doesn't really matter. His perception of his salary is what matters. I wouldn't be shocked if Gronk thinks he can make similar money without taking as many physical risks.

As a 50 year old guy my mind easily says retire.
As a former athlete I don't know that I could walk away that easy from the game, the competition and the money at that age.
I finished my career by saying next major injury I'm done. Broke my leg and that was it, kept my word to myself.

I'd like to know what planet he lives on where he can't afford to retire comfortably this very second. This dude is set for life and I highly doubt this is about money. What's the difference between $50 and $70m when it comes to your "lifestyle"?

In addition, this guy might have one of the biggest personalities in the NFL. If Travis Kelce can make money from a tv show, I see no reason why Gronk can't make it in Hollywood. I would most likely watch any movie that Gronk stars in, regardless of how bad it is.
I'm more worried about Belichick's future earnings than Gronk's.

20 million dollars is a lot of money. I mean even in an interest bearing account at 1%, you are gaining 200,000 a year. That extra money gives you a lot more flexibility to take investment chances, to buy an extra home, to travel more, etc.
There is one thing I've learned from very rich people and it is they all love money and want more of it.

I swear some of you are bean counters for a living. People with money love money but they don't usually work hard to earn money once they have money. Money makes money.
The lifestyle difference between $50m and $70m is 0!!! nothing changes he still parties like Gronk and does everything in life he will ever want and never go without.

His lifestyle absolutely can change with 40% more money.

The planet we live on. Many athletes don’t manage their money well and live year to year, ending up broke. Fortunately, it sounds like Gronk has saved well.
People with money love money but they don't usually work hard to earn money once they have money.
You don’t know a lot of people with money, do you? This is completely false.

I can only speak for myself, but my financial situation has changed pretty wildly several times in my life and I pretty much act the same and work the same whether I am in the top 1% or lower middle class.

Yeah I don't get these sentiments. And I really don't get how 40% more money is being laughed at. Sure if Gronk was a billionaire another 20 million probably not a big deal, but 20 million when you have 50 million (and I doubt Gronk has 50 million) is way different. 40% more money is a lot of money.

Apparently the WWE contract is for a couple of million a year on a part-time schedule with limited on camera appearances a year and even more limited matches a year. Kinda like the contract Brock Lesnar and Rhonda Rousey signed.
He would probably be expected to do a lot of appearances for charity events and stuff like that. But the actual amount of bumps he would take per year would be very little.

Couldn't do it. His matches would be spaced throughout the year and always would happen on Sundays and Mondays. In between he could do acting gigs and such but no way could he do both WWE and NFL.

He could do the whole thing where he's only showing up for Wrestlemanias.

I hate to say it from a fan's point, but, I think he should retire. It's going to be hard to be Gronk and be 49 years old (not that he thinks about that for half a second). He has been hit or gone airborne and hit the ground enough times.
They are an interesting family of athletes/coaches, I wonder if they're suggesting he retire from football?
From a PR perspective the wrestling thing will keep him on the front page enough to get appearance income and ads.
-
Probably retire but I might consider sitting out till game 10, which is I think the longest you can sit out and still get vesting for the pension. Make almost a half season's worth and post season money. Maybe pick up a ring. Be more likely to be totally healthy for the post season.
-
He has a shot to be the NFL's GOAT TE. And win more titles.
Once in a million lifetimes' chance.
But look at what happened to Muhammad Ali (yes, I know it's not 100% sure what caused his illness, but he exhibited Parkinsons's symptoms after many of his longer/tougher fights, implying the head trauma was related https://www.cbssports.com/boxing/news/study-muhammad-ali-showed-signs-of-parkinsons-years-before-retirement-diagnosis/).
imagine if someone told Ali halfway through his career that if he stopped boxing he could have had a normal life afterwards. Should he have done it? I think I might choose the pain just to increase human achievement. But that is such a hard call to make.

Sit him right next to Bill on the bench till about week 9.

Much of Ali's problem in his latter years was he needed the money. He needed the paydays and the promoters knew that & exploited that.
From all accounts, Gronk isn't financially strapped and in a much better position to walk away if necessary.

I don’t know if he would have, but yeah, he should have.
I’ve got no desire to see Gronk end up like Junior Seau, or Dave Duerson.
-
I bet Tom has been managing this situation, whether it is texting him or giving Gronk the space that he wants. I still have hope that Tom, Bill, Gronk, and the Pats all have graceful exits from one another. It would be great if they could win another Super Bowl then all walk out together in a couple of years.

Yeah, I agree with this. We need him for the playoffs, not the regular season. Playing half of a season and still making the same money would have to be somewhat desirable for him.

Doubt Belichick would openly allow this. They'd have to come up with an injury.
It's a unique scenario where the team is good enough that they don't need to care about any non-qb in the regular season. This combined with Gronk's propensity to get injured makes the partial season really attractive to Gronk and the Patriots.

Dude has nothing left to prove.
He's by far the best at his position. He's won rings. He's a sure fire HOFer.
Retire and go act around a ring couple of times a year and make some action movies with Dwayne Johnson.
-
Go to the Redskins.
We'll take him.
Heck, send us your 50 year old (in 7, 8 years?) Brady, too. We'll take him as well.
-
He should retire if he feels he has enough money or other opportunities to make a good living.
If that is wrestling or movies it is up to him. But wrestling isn't a safe from injuries.
