The discussion opens the mind to the likelihood that mid-level FAs will have Boston on their destination lists this off-season.  So the question of Carmelo should be placed on the relativity scale -- who are possible TPE targets or FAs who could best fill out the roster/ add another weapon?  Premature for sure, but another piece to the excitement of having a young, competitive team.

No thanks.. I want guys who play defense.
Once you are labeled 'the best' you want to stay up there, and you can't do it by loafing around.

Exactly!
I wouldn't use the TP_MLE on Anthony, because I think we can get a better player.
So in the extreme Carmelo Anthony or Juwan Morgan as the 12-15th man on a vet min contract?

Carmelo doesn't make any sense for the Celtics.  You don't want to bring in poor defender even if he was much better than Carmelo.  The 1st tenant should be do no harm to the defense.

Now he might work for the Sixers if they can't find anyone better.  He is certainly an upgrade from Milsap or Jordan.   Maybe Niang too but Niang is much less than MLE.

This.

I actually do want the Celtics to bring in a big wing this offseason and Carmelo can still get buckets... but he's a turnstile on defense and who knows what attitude he'd bring.

I'd rather go after Otto Porter. A big wing who can defend and shoot 3's and spend the last year in a top-notch NBA program in GS. Having him and Grant as the wings off the bench next year would be a nice fit.

Would you give him the TP-MLE or only vet min?

Porter is going to get significantly more than vet minimum.

Carmelo Anthony is unfortunately washed.

I’d imagine the only reason he was able to sign with the Lakers in the first place was due to their horrible roster construction and cap constraints.

I think it’s rather sad how Carmelo’s career has turned out. I remember when Melo was drafted, and thinking his career would have the best elite longevity from the 03 class because of his height, natural strength and elite shooting stroke.

Yeah, put him on Detroit and he had a totally different career.  Real coaching and being brought up in a veteran team setting would have done wonders.  It’s kind of like Tatum now.  He’s going to reach his ceiling because he’s in and organization that has taught him to be a complete player.

Yes exactly, obviously Carmelo had a huge ego and I’m sure being around guys like Billups & Ben Wallace would have given him a reality check.

Contrast that situation with the one Melo fell into in Denver and from day one he was the centre of the franchise being surrounded by expendable role players.

I also think Carmelo’s wife had a negative impact on his career too.

I don't know what would be required. He's a big 3-D wing so it'll probably be more than the vet min.

The thing about this Celtics roster, though, is that if they have success this season, it could mostly be set for next year (assuming Horford takes a bit of a step back and Grant takes a bit of a step forward). Will it need a tweak, like adding Porter, or a bigger move, like using Horford's contract to swap for a bigger name?

Not an NBA caliber player anymore.
This is patently false. I don't want Melo whatsoever, but this is a silly thing to say. What makes Melo worse than Gallinari?

Why......

Sam Hauser is better at everything than Melo at this point why not just give the guy a chance to play more..we do not need Melo even if God forbid Tatum misses an entire season.

Sam Hauser is not better at anything besides three point shooting. Stop that.

🤢 🤮

Dude is toast and always sucked on the defensive end. We’ve already got that 8th man who provides an offensive spark off the bench (Pritchard) and with him there’s hope of his D continuing to improve.
