Title: Is this the dirtiest play you've ever seen in a basketball game?
Post by: Donoghus on November 14, 2018, 11:24:30 AM
This is as bad as I've seen. This kid's college career should be done. Nichols College v. Fitchburg State

Not only should his college career be over, but he should be arrested too.

I love how he clearly turns to see if the ref is paying attention and then levels the kid.

Most likely the shooter said something truly inflammatory to the kid before this, but that's no excuse.

Pretty bad. Maybe the worst. Wouldn't be surprised if they press charges but I'm of the opinion that just about anything short of murder that happens on a field of play shouldn't be prosecuted.

But that said, that's a really bad play.

That was an incredibly dangerous act, let alone cheap and dirty. He is jogging forward and delivers a full elbow while the opponent is in a defenseless position. That could literally kill someone. The kid who got hit apparently continued playing, hopefully they check him for concussion symptoms.

And Platt should be expelled and charged with assault. Honestly that would be getting off lightly.

According to the internet sleuths over on Reddit:

Kewan Platt (http://www.fitchburgfalcons.com/sports/mbkb/2018-19/bios/kewan_platt?view=bio), current conference player of the week, and this is believed to be his dad. (http://jamaicaplaingazette.com/2010/06/25/community_center_head_charged_with_child_assault/)

And you can see the full play here (and the whole game if you really wanted) (https://boxcast.tv/view/fitchburg-state-mens-basketball-vs-nichols-600-pm-340212), play happens at 2:01:58.  Watching a few minutes before to see if there's any chippyness, there's a play about 1:55:12 where it looks like Platt inadvertently elbows Tenaglia after a dunk, but besides that don't notice anything.  Tenaglia also gets floored by a pick around 2:00:41 (but not by Platt).  Platt actually seemed to be playing great too, leading his team's comeback attempt.

Play seemed to be in full view of another ref too, who initially just called a regular foul.

Horrible.  That kid should be kicked off the team, kicked out of FSU and charged with assault & battery.

I don't know if the kid who got hit 'deserved it' by saying something horrendous in some earlier moment of the game or not or if there is some other history between the two, but that kind of info is for the judge to hear in mitigation.   There is absolutely no place for that kind of violence on the basketball court and shouldn't be any place for it in society in general.

I can't really quantify if that's the very dirtiest or not (the foreign player flat knocking out the ref springs to mind) but it's incredibly dirty and dangerous by any measure.

I agree with people who say the nature of the hit probably rises to not just a huge basketball penalty but a criminal prosecution too.

The kid's own coach should have taken him off the court, told the kid to take off his jersey, then go to the locker room with the assistant coach and change because he isn't on the team anymore.

Seconded. That was truly despicable.

The Pistons, late 80's early 90's, were the worst I've see. Robert Parish just beat Lambeer into the ground finally. Just cheap shots over and over. Johnny Most was calling Lambeer and Machorn, Mcdirty and McNasty.

It was "McFilthy and McNasty," I believe.

Suspended indefinitely, barred from campus, & apparently his POY award has been vacated.

This is absurd. Assault is assault. I think there should always be consideration for accidental contact in sports, but this isn’t that. He assaulted the other player.

That's fine. I've held absurd opinions before. I even kind of agree that it's absurd. And it's my opinion.

I've seen dirtier but the guy really hide it well from the refs.  That being said, he should be banned from play.  The Kermit Washington punch on Rudy T  was worse and did more damage...

So it looks like the kid lost his player of the year award, was thrown off the team, has been banned from coming on campus and the police are investigating the incident to see if charges should be brought against him.

the first time I saw that Kermit punch I couldn’t believe it. It’s such a forceful punch, one o the worst acts of unarmed violence period (basketball or not) I still have it embedded in my memory

This is why I dont understand people who say "why did the police shoot him? He was unarmed!

Because an unarmed Kermit Washington sent Rudy to 2 weeks in intensive care, broken jaw, broken nose, fractured face, and cracked skull where he could taste the spinal fluid

Of course the result was worse, but that was during an altercation at least. Kermit should have been suspended much longer or even banned (so should have Artest), but this was an actual play, completely unprovoked. Rudy T certainly didn’t look like he was running in to attack anyone, but it was still in the midst of a fight.

Playing basketball in the NCAA or NBA is a privilege, not a right, regardless of talent. Act like a thug, you should be banned.

On the night of Dec. 9, 1977, the Houston Rocket forward had suffered a fractured skull, broken jaw, broken nose, other facial injuries and leakage of spinal fluid when he was struck by the fist of Laker forward Kermit Washington.

When the swelling subsided, surgery was performed to reconstruct his face. Tomjanovich eventually recovered and played for three more seasons before he retired in 1981.

Does anyone know what happened to this kid the OP posted.

As far as I know, he passed concussion protocol and was able to finish the game.
