Game Notes

These division foes meet for the first of 4 games this season.  They will meet one more time in Boston on January 31 and in twice in New York on December 21 and February 24.  The Celtics win the series 3-1 last season. The last time the Knicks won the season series between these two teams was in 2012-13.

Both teams have changed considerably since they last met.  The Knicks finally unloaded Carmelo Anthony and Derrick Rose and this is now Kristaps Porzingis' team.   They have added former Celtic Courtney Lee, Ramon Sessions, and Enes Kanter, among others.  The Celtics return just 4 players from last year.

Marcus Smart missed Friday's game with two rolled ankles and is day to day. I expect them to  be cautious with him if he isn't 100%. He will undergo tests in the morning and will be a game time decision.   Marcus Morris has done some work on the court but is not expected to be evaluated until Monday and so will miss this game.

Joakim Noah was suspended for 20 games last season for violating the league's anti-drug policy.   He served 8 games last season and has 12 games to serve this season.   He is out for this game.
Frank Ntilikina sprained his ankle in practice last week and did not practice on Sunday.  He is day to day.

As has been the case with every game since Gordon Hayward went down,  the starting lineup is fluid.  Marcus Smart started one game and with his ankle injury keeping him out of last game, Aron Baynes got the start.  It worked out well in the last game as they got the victory so I guessed that they would go with the same lineup for this game.

Key Matchups
(http://basketball.realgm.com/images/nba/4.2/profiles/photos/2006/Horford_Al_bos1617.jpg)  vs  (https://basketball.realgm.com/images/nba/4.2/profiles/photos/2006/Porzingis_Kristaps_nyk17.jpg)
Al Horford vs Kristaps Porzingis
This is now Kristaps Porzingis' team with the departure of Carmelo Anthony and he has taken advantage of the opportunity.  He is averaging 32 points and 8.5 rebounds.   Limiting him would go a long way toward getting a win against this team.

(https://basketball.realgm.com/images/nba/4.2/profiles/photos/2006/Irving_Kyrie_bos17.jpg)  vs  (https://basketball.realgm.com/images/nba/4.2/profiles/photos/2006/Sessions_Ramon_nyk17.jpg)
Kyrie Irving vs Ramon Sessions
Kyrie carries a lot on his shoulders with Gordon Hayward out for the season.  With a new system and all new teammates, it may take him a bit to get back to his All-Star level of play.  But with every game, he should show improvement and he should get the better of this matchup.

Keys to the Game
Defense
- Playing tough team defense is the key to winning every game. The Celtics need to concentrate on getting stops and keeping the Knicks' offense off balance.  The Knicks allow 108.0 points per game while the Celtics allow 100.7 points per game.    The Celtics must concentrate on playing tough team defense to keep the Knicks from getting a win in this one.

Rebound -  The Celtics for the first time in awhile aren't at the bottom of the league in rebounding.  The Celtics are 8th with 48.0 rebounds per game while the Knicks are 25th with 40.0 rebounds per game.  The Celtics are getting it done with a team rebounding effort and not depending on one or two players to be the rebounders.  The Knicks are 24th allowing 18 second chance points while the Celtics are 12th allowing just 12.3 second chance points.

Be Aggressive - The Celtics need to be the more aggressive team. They have to be more aggressive in going after loose balls, in grabbing rebounds, in defending, and in going to the basket.  They have to be the team that wants it more.  They have to find the swagger and heart that last year's team played with.  They simply have to out-work their opponents.

Move the Ball- The Celtics have to keep the ball moving and find the open man.  When the ball sticks and one player tries to do too much,  the team suffers.  They have to play as a team and trust their teammates and keep the ball moving.  No hero ball.

Focus -  The Celtics are shooting just 66.7% from the free throw line.  That shows a certain lack of focus on the part of each of the players.  They have to keep their focus and hit their free throws and focus on playing Celtics basketball.

X-Factors
Desperation vs Confidence

The Celtics finally got their first win in their last game.  They have to have a bit more confidence now that the monkey is off their backs.  On the other hand, the Knicks are still looking for their first win and will be playing like the more desperate team.  The Celtics have to keep a certain amount of desperation to get their first home win and not allow the Knicks to play harder.

Home Game - The Celtics lost their home opener and will be looking to get their first win for the home crowd.  Hopefully they get a boost from the fans and it will carry them to a win in this game.

I hope with a longish break from games this team can't get things back in order. Having  games in nights was going to be tough anyways, but after Haywards injury, that really threw things.

Lets play well and get an other win and get some momentum for the revenge game vs the Bucks.

Wow NYK are loaded with journeymen.  Porzingis is like our Smart, lotto draft pick who is one of the longer tenured players on the team.

Lets see if practice time helps with the C's cohesion.

Yeah, three days of to regroup and adjust to present circumstances.
This is where brads worth is revealed.
Still, don't think we'll be particularly smooth, a win isn't guaranteed.
But I hope we see better cohesion on D and flow on offense.

Terry Rozier is not the Celtics "best" player, but, in the three games he's basically 15 points and 7  rebounds if they leave him on the floor. He's 50%+on his somewhat crazy shots.

Fun watching him tear up opposing benches and tired starters. The Knix don't like players like Rozier...because he plays too hard.

Brown is combining his increased skill level with his already aggressive nature on off for taking the ball to the rack.  It is really fun to see him develop literally every game.  Same for Tatum.  It really seems like we are watching the next great celtics starting to develop.  Hot take, limited data, whatever....

All of Brown's points from 3, or within three feet of the basket. Combine that scoring profile with his defense and he has the makings of a very efficient player.

Much more composure from the team. The weekend off has allowed them to regroup. They look a lot more purposeful in the offense. Defense is still a bit disjointed but with more time together that will come.

He was passing a lot prior to the 4 times he didn't.

Not able to watch this one unfortunately, but just got a box score alert.

Not a slight to Kyrie (I think I'm finally over my hissy fit) - he's a great player - but is Jaylen Brown not our best player right now?  Kid has completely shocked me thus far.

I don't want to overreact, because we're playing the Knicks, but Tatum looks incredibly poised and polished for a rookie. He plays so well within the offense, and once his confidence peaks he'll be ballin every night. Jaylen has made a huge leap and is looking like a legit offensive weapon. The two of them could be an incredible pair.

As impressive as Jaylen has been, I'll go with Tatum's NBA readiness.

Tatum has been chipping in in a lot of areas, especially rebounding.  It's on full display this game.  He's getting playing good defense, getting blocks & steals, and has hit a variety of shots including fadeaways, putback dunks, and 3's.  He looks great for a rookie.

Rozier has 1-3 from the field and is a game high +17 - he is turning in to the guy who can be the biggest impact player on the court without scoring a point.  lol wow who thought we'd ever say that about Rozier of all people

4 rebounds, 4 assists, zero turnovers in 14 minutes

His current AST:TO ratio for the season is a ridiculous 4.7:1 - and doesn't look like that's changing based on todays numbers.

If he keeps this up, Smarts going to have to work hard for minutes.

I was big on Jaylen. I thought he'd be the pick, and unlike most, was happy to see him in green over Dunn. But I didn't see this coming. He couldn't dribble or finish last year. The shot looked decent from the corners, but I thought he was destined to be another Jae Crowder, which would have been a fine outcome in a weak draft. Given the growth he's shown after one year, though. Maaaaaan. He looks like a stud, an absolute stud.

In the second half of his career Pierce often said that he was just trying to give the game whatever it needed, whether that was a scoring punch, a stronger rebounding effort, or making extra passes. Tatum looks like he has the poise and versatility to play that role. I'm so excited about this kid.

This is gonna sound weird, but maybe the most impressive play Jaylen had was that last missed shot at the rim. I say that because I have no idea how he even got there. The defense seemed to have him cut off and he just sort of side stepped the defender and with one stride was there. His  footwork on drives seems much improved from last year, and we have seen a drastic reduction in turnovers driving into the paint.

With all due respect, please check my signature. It's been that way since draft night of last year. I got a LOT of flack last year during draft night for being one of the few who thought the Brown naysayers were incorrect. I also said that Brown would make significant strides this year. He showed after the All Star break that his game was progressing (if in fits and starts).

I'm not saying I'm right - after all, he's not an All Star yet - but I've been pretty consistent in predicting Jaylen would blossom into a wonderful player. When you combine great coaching, a winning team, great role models, a smart player who has a great drive all at the same time it's very likely that player will succeed.

Danny Ainge and CBS are basketball savants, You really have to study the type of players they have brought in to understand that what you are seeing is not just luck. There is a plan coming to fruition guys.

I adore Tatum. It's well documented that I was very high on him. However, there is no way that anyone could have watched Jaylen last year and told you this was coming. He looks like a different player.
Anyone who watched a game in the second half of the season should have known this was coming. The question has always been whether he can do it on a consistent basis, rather than once every three games. The jury is still out on that -- I'd hold off judgement until the rest of the league realizes that this cat is out of the bag.

More impressive - Jaylen's overall development or Tatum's NBA readiness?

Definitely Jaylen. Tatum was a polished player. We knew he'd be good relatively quickly. Obviously, this was unexpected, but not out of the realm of possibility. Jaylen looks like a totally different player.

As good as Tatum has been, I have to agree. Jaylen is so much better on both sides of the ball this year in an expanded role.

I adore Tatum. It's well documented that I was very high on him. However, there is no way that anyone could have watched Jaylen last year and told you this was coming. He looks like a different player.

With all due respect, please check my signature. It's been that way since draft night of last year. I got a LOT of flack last year during draft night for being one of the few who thought the Brown naysayers were incorrect.

I was high on Brown too. I predicted he would be the pick and praised the decision. There is no way after watching him last season that you could have thought (from what we saw on the court) that he'd eventually be an All-Star, though. He had such a long way to go. It's honestly hard to believe what we've seen from him so far.

He didn't travel? Maybe he lost the ball on the way to rim but I thought he walked.

That was a pretty inept first half from the Unicorn.

That is because Al Horford is doing his job.

For all of my criticisms of Horford's lack of output this year I have to admit - his defence has been consistently excellent.

I feel he's playing defence at a significantly higher level then he did last year.  Just seems to be in the right place at the right time, every time.

For both Jaylen’s and Jayson’s development, it is the speed at which they seem to be maturing that is impressive.  If we saw this happening with both players a year from now  I think we would be satisfied.

I don't.  Kyrie fits a system offense.  Look at how the other guys are getting involved more now that IT isn't running the whole offense.  Can't win like that.  The draft pick = kyrie.  IT is hurt and aging.  Crowder is a bum role player and zizic needs shipped back overseas.  We kept a pick and still have a good one this year.  We'll be fine

Yep, thanks to teams giving dumb contracts, Horford became quite expensive. But he's the catalyst behind IT's breakout year last season. Without him, Isaiah wouldn't average 29 PPG.

No, that's actually great to hear!

Even vs. Knicks, last year's team would have found a way to let them back in (or any bad team for that matter)

Man, I really admire Porzingis. Even when he has a bad game while playing with terrible teammates, he is still very nice to opposing players. He commited a hard fault - showing wil to change the game - and then helped Theis stand up.

Lots of players could learn with him about the difference of playing dirty and wanting to win

Think Kyrie's playing better today. Shot selection hasn't been good (and they're not falling), but it's been better. Hopefully, it'll just get better from here.

Yes, once he (and everyone) figures the offense out this team will be heaps of fun to watch, even without Gordon. Whenever Gordon comes back he will come back to a team that is better than the one he left.

No, I think it is more that you have to give your starters game time minutes to build their stamina for when they really need it. You cannot have starters used to playing only three quarters. You may also want to simulate some game ending plays for practice.

Kyrie, Horford, Jaylen, and Jayson were all great in this game.

I think we can pencil in the Knicks as a team that will be worse than the Nets this season.

I’msurprised cBS still has starters in the game
Don't be. Brad's game management is atrocious as usual.

I disagree with that. I think Brad's just giving guys playing time together. Brad is a great coach.
Either that, or he has no idea when to pull them. I don't think there's anything to be gained by "playing together" in something which is at this stage a glorified pickup game.
I think it's more that after his teams have been burned so much blowing big leads he, for good or bad, believes that no lead is safe enough.

No, I think it is more that you have to give your starters game time minutes to build their stamina for when they really need it. You cannot have starters used to playing only three quarters. You may also want to simulate some game ending plays for practice.
The weaknesses will become apparent when they play good defensive teams that get some film on them. It's gong to take a while for these guys to come together - that said though they look a lot more cohesive than I expected.

Always nice to crush the teams you are supposed to, especially with Tatum/Brown both getting me pumped for their futures.

Whoa! Don't be talkin' like that about the Nets. They blew a 12 point lead against the Magic only moments ago. They still have "it"....just give them time.

On the other end of the East, Cleveland struggled in yet another game against a garbage opponent.

Jeff Green has looked like Cleveland's third best player thus far this season lol

I know it's just the Knicks and they are a bit inexperienced right now.

I know that Tatum is just a rookie.

I know that he won't always have games like this.

But he has shown a penchant for getting buckets in bunches - like Paul Pierce used to do.

He seems like a Natural, and that's no offense to Robert Redford.

The more that he and Jaylen can have games like this will help to soften the blow of GH being temporarily out.

Great game by the C's. Continue to get better and build momentum.

Nice. It always pays to bet against the Knicks but this Celtics squad just needs some time to gel!

That is very disappointing. Thought they had it all wrapped up. Stupid Nets!  >:(

Great win for the young Cs, though - happy to get an easy W with such strong performances from Brown and Tatum!

Didn’t get to see the game, but my favorite part of the box score is 26 assists on 37 baskets — definitely our best ratio of the season so far.

#FreeYabu
If he were playing better defense in practice than Semi he'd probably be in instead of Semi. Nader is next one in. Yabu is last

Nader is the biggest ball-hogging black hole ever to wear a Celtics Jersey - I'd rather see Yabusele out there any day.

Hell I think I'd rather see a 350 pound, three point chucking Jared Sullinger on one leg then Nader.
Well you got to see Yabu so you got pretty close on that one
