I'll try to add five that aren't already on the list.

The Bob Newhart Show (the first one)

The Mary Tyler Moore Show

The Dick Van Dyke Show

30 Rock

Entourage

Sorry I almost forgot Night Court.

No particular order

Seinfeld - I never bought into how "brilliant" the early years were how they could do a half hour show based on nothing but their brilliant observations on mundane situations. It seems a tad arrogant, though I'm probably confusing praise from critics with what the shows creators actually said. Anyways, I much more prefered when they ditched that format after the first few seasons. My all-time fav episode has to be the one where Kramer finds the Merv Griffin set in the dumpster.

The Simpsons - I could literally spend several hours just listening to people quote entire scenes from the show and enjoy myself. And I have. Of course, alcohol was involved.

South Park - This one tends to be more "hit" or "miss" with me depending on the episode. I think that it would be hard to watch say, half a season and not be offended/disgusted by at least something from that show. That said, once in a while they hit one out of the park. Stan's dad( Randy) is usually good for a laugh.

Flight of the Conchords - I've only seen one season and probably would list this show my #1 favorite all-time. I don't have HBO, but the first season DVD only cost something like 20 dollars. I recommend it, FWIW.

Moonlighting - This was popular a tad before my time, but my parents both enjoyed and taped the show. I became more familiar with it in my teenage years. It was pretty well written.

what are people's top 5 comedies?

mine (in no order)

-fresh prince of bel air
-cosby show
-seinfeld
-roseanne
-big bang theory

*leave it to beaver is a close behind

Man, I know you really like it, and you're entitled to your opinion, but The Big Bang Theory? If you're talking about today, then I don't really care either way, but there's a lot of past comedies that you've got to give some respect to over The Big Bang Theory.

I would say, if a current show is going to be included on this list, it has to be either the Simpsons or the Office.

The Big Bang Theory has got to be the TOP 5 LAMEST shows of all time.

There is no science. There is no humor. You learn nothing. There is not even the obligatory eye candy to distract you as your IQ plummets. In fact, there is no banging going on at all in the Big Bang. Any way you look at it, it's flat out false advertisement.

Yoda: Non-existent is the force with this show.

we obviously have different senses of humor.  doesnt mean one of us is right and the other is wrong.  im sure i would disagree with some of ur list

1.  The Simpsons
2.  Arrested Development
3.  Saturday Night Live (I'm surprised how few lists I see this on... y'know, it wasn't always Jimmy Fallon).
4.  30 Rock
5.  Chapelle Show

A lot of difficult ommissions here, but I think this is solid for me.

Would it be less than manly to add Sex in the City?

It really was a pretty funny show.

1.) All in the Family - really, considering the time it was out, what was happening in the country, and the ground breaking way the made comedy as well as the subjects they covered, it's not even close.

2.) I Love Lucy - pure genius and some of the best situational slapstick comedy ever. Another ground breaking show in the way it was shot and produced.

3.) Seinfeld - the measuring stick by which all future intelligent comedy will be measured. As close to being a classic as soon as it ended as any show ever.

4.) Saturday Night Live - maybe not your prototypical comedy show but is there a show that has exhibitted more catch phrases or talk around the water cooler comedy moments than SNL? I don't think so.

5.) Simpsons - while the Flintstones may have first broke the cartoon family sitcom barrier, the Simpsons perfected it and introduced America to it's most dysfunctional television family ever cartoon or not. It's first ten years are pure television history.

Someone should put a vote up here.  Most people have already had mine.  Maybe you could do a vote where it's 5 points for your favorite, 4 for second and so on.  Most points wins.

Mine are:
Seinfeld
Family Guy
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Sunny in Philadelphia
Simpsons
The Office
Cheers
Arrested Development
How I Met Your Mother
Ali G (minus Bruno)
SNL(tons of good sketches, even though plenty suck too)

I like the Get a Life reference, but I don't know about all time greatness.
