Less people tends to mean less separation between quality of teams, especially in an all-time draft. It means trying to determine a winner gets very difficult, even more so, again, given it is an all-time draft.

If you do it with ten players, maybe eliminate the playoffs, everyone gives their ranking of the 10 teams, not including their's of course, and the team with the most ranking points win. If it's a 3 way tie, so be it. The fun is in assembling the teams and discussing the players, not who wins.

This is what I was thinking about, but I didn't have any specific method to address it. I like the ranking system, as it would clean it up a lot.

Definitely open to any suggestions though

Honestly to do this right you really do need more than 10 teams.  I mean every team is basically going to have a HOFer at every slot with that few teams.  If we do go with 10, I'd like to see a narrowing of the time-period.  You know maybe something like only players drafted in the 80's and 90's or something like that.  It would make the team building more varied and much more critical (like for your 8th man do you take the HOFer or the quality role player that is a specialist more suited for that role).  If it is every player in league history there really isn't going to be enough separation between the teams when you have have 10 teams picking.

And I'm fine just ranking the teams from 1 to 10 with 10 points for 1, 9 points for 2, etc. If you have a team, you just rank your own as 1, unless of course you don't think you had the best team and as long as everyone with a team votes it makes no real difference to the outcome.  And if you want more voters you can open that up to the rest of the blog.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

This is definitely something to consider as well. It could be too saturated with talent if it's simply 10 teams of every player.

We could do a poll where people vote for two decades (or however many, just an example) and the two with the most votes are the pools we can select from, or something similar.

Yup. Moranis is right on on this and this was exactly what I was referring to. As I am sure Moranis remembers, we did an all time, every player draft with 16 teams and even then, it was ridiculously difficult to pick a winner.

We did things by awards for different teams, in the Historical Draft. Best Overall Team, Best Defensive Team, Best Offensive Team, etc. Then had awards for Best Overall Player, Best Defensive Player, Best 6th Man, Best Offensive Player, etc. It generally made it so a bunch of teams got recognized for some reason through a team or a player they drafted.

I thought the fun part was in selecting the team based on years. Like I remember someone drafting John Havlicek a bit early but that's because they wanted Hondo's best 6th Man year. I think that is brilliant team building.

Others later on picked players who may not have had great careers but had an amazing year or so. Bernard King and Jayson Williams come to mind. Again, great team building.

But you had to do that when there were going to be 192 players selected rather than 120.

I don't know if this is something that could work, but maybe setting a limit to how many HOFers (and eventual HOFers) you can take in the draft? Or, like Moranis suggested, setting the draft to a certain time period? I'd suggest something like 1990-present, or something like that.

I'd be in favour of the HoFer limit as it would force participants to get creative in building a supporting cast for the superstars they select in the draft. A certain time period would also make sense, but I'd prefer something more like post NBA/ABA merger-present.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems he forgot to add you to the list, so now we have 11. I choose those dates simply because it would be alot easier to define a value to each player if we made it only semi-modern. Hard to compare players like Pistol Pete and Havlicek to modern players like Curry, but the NBA/ABA merger also sounds good.

Oh yes he forgot lol. And true, but a similar case could be made for players in the 80s and 90s when spacing was poor and the illegal defense rule was still being implemented.

A HOFer limit would be pretty interesting, and I would be on board with that if it's what it takes!
