Yay - first again!
Great job, FLC and TP! Big game for the Cs in SA this time. Still no Kawhi, but Aldridge has been weirdly good. Go Cs!!

you were first by TWO MINUTES! do you guys just sit here waiting for this thread to pop up?
IF SO.................................
Can't ask for a much better start so far!
Spurs can't hit the broad side of a barn while the C's can't miss. I like. :)Mostly Gasol, looks cooked.
Jaylen probably saw all the hype Ingram was getting and is looking to have a big night tonight ;D
Jaylen probably saw all the hype Ingram was getting and is looking to have a big night tonight ;D
Ingram deserves some of the hype. He's turning into a good player.
That doesn't take away from Brown though. We got a good guy of our own.
What a finish by JT!Great looking!
Kyrie with 17 pts in a little over 8 mins!
Hopefully this is a "textbook blowout" and not another game where Brad brings in a horrible bench lineup to bring SAS back into the game.

Hopefully this is a "textbook blowout" and not another game where Brad brings in a horrible bench lineup to bring SAS back into the game.
Little early to be calling this game a "blowout" let alone the "textbook" variety. Ever since the Cs opening with 11 unanswered pts, both teams have essentially been trading baskets with Kyrie and Aldridge doing the work.
ya know what
Kyrie is pretty decent player
Rozier is under control tonight.
Apparently Stevens will simply never learn. He's going to ride this all bench unit to its death, regardless of how terrible it has been all season long. This is just his regular 1st quarter substitution pattern.
For such a brilliant coach this is such an annoying issue in his coaching philosophy.
Morris' shot selection tonight is awful so far.
I love Theis. Contests the Ginobili layup, gets the board, sprints down the floor then gets a dunk.
**** Kyrie
Feeling a 63 for Kyrie 😁
Apparently Gasol is getting superstar treatment tonight?? Dude just flails his body around, grunts, and gets the foul.
Morris...no comment >:(
Morris is really hurting us tonight.
Man, if Terry could play more under control like this more often, he'd be just what we need off the bench. The problem with Rozier and Smart is their lack of consistency.
Rozier's movement alone in the pick and roll is very advanced. Just the way he moves In space.
Beautiful pass by Theis. Knew he had no chance and made the extra pass for the corner 3.
air ball ojeleye SMH ::)

He's got a very high BBIQ!
air ball ojeleye SMH ::)
Got the construction crew in...tearin down what was built and Layin bricks
Are we riding bench for whole 2nd?
Semi needs to hit that. Not so much the desperation one. But the wide open 3 -- needs to start hitting.
Ojeleye can be so good looking for a couple minute spurts then go the rest of the game looking lost and awful. He needs to get some consistency

I don't mind the C's letting the bench play as long as they keep the lead.
I don't mind the C's letting the bench play as long as they keep the lead.
I prefer the word, maintain
Spurs leading rebounds now.
Wow. That's not a foul on Horford.
Jaylen needs to get it together. Tatum is super consistent but Jaylen goes off the deep end every so often.
Goggles completely bothering Brown tonight?
What a terrible call. Smart didn't have possession of that.
Man, great start then fizzled going into the half.
this one will be a battle to the end
Can't help but feel like the refs have it in for Smart tonight. Wish he hadn't build himself a bad reputation with the flopping, now he never gets the benefit of the doubt.its absolutely this
I'm gonna ask again Bill Kennedy.
Doc's not coaching the Celtics anymore, so what the hell is your problem?
feels like groundhog day every seingle game now in relation to refs.. GOD AWFUL. why doesn't the NBA hire the best and brightest?

no, a foul is a foul. refs need to call the fouls. Can't help but feel like the refs have it in for Smart tonight. Wish he hadn't build himself a bad reputation with the flopping, now he never gets the benefit of the doubt.its absolutely this
Legendary said it: Smart brought this on himself.
Welp, that was a fitting end to the first half: Smart doesn't get the foul call, then Ginobili hits a Hail Mary.
Cs started the game on fire, the Spurs ice cold, and it was to be expected that neither of those trends would keep up for the whole half, but the Cs did themselves few favors in the second quarter. Kyrie took ONE shot the entire second quarter, and pretty much everyone else decided on a career change (brick masons).
Stevens needs to put Baynes back in, and the Cs have to make the open shots.

My reaction to that 3 st the end
I'm afraid that Jaylen didn't see that 3 ... or much of anything the entire first half.
I hope I'm right on my next prediction.- Before the season is over Theis and Ojeleye will start hitting a creditable amount of threes. They have good form and appear to be hard workers. Hope time proves me correct.

Nice activity by Brown. That finish in transition was beautiful.still needs to work on making his FTs unfortunately
That's 1 way to slow LA down. Go inside and make him work and/or pick up fouls.didnt know we were playing Los Angeles

jaylem shoots FT worse than SHAQ
Wish I could blame Brown's awful FT shooting on the goggles ... alas, he's been awful at that all year.
Is it just me, or have we not had all that many non-NBATV national tv games so far?for the season, we have the 5th most non-NBATV national TV games.

We have played 6(I think) so far. This puts us at 24% of our national TV games through 30% of our season.

so not so bad. Remember this is in San Antonio, the Spurs are 17-8 (3rd in West) and 12-2 in this building.

I hope Baynes is okay.thought he caught it in the cajones but now I'm not so sure
Did all of Australia just get nuked?
Baynes seemed to land fine. Then pain. Thought he mouthed "my knee', but hope not.
Not the knee. Maybe was a cramp.
Lol pop mad
Did anyone notice that Jaylen's tip slam was over Gasol, too? Lol That dude is a magnet for being posterized.

Spurs look pretty good to me without Leonard. When he's back looks like this team could beat GSW.
Bad Smart and Rozier showed up just in time for the fourth.
Morris's bad shooting is killing us.

KYRIE
Finally keep taking it to the rim!
Great. Everyone's getting in on the action now for SA, even Gay.
Morris is 2-9, Horford 1-5, Smart 1-5, Rozier 1-6 on threes. Awful.
Can we get Terry Bricklayer out of there, please?
Morris's bad shooting is killing us.

it's a good thing that kyrie is unstoppable tonight.
but we need a 2nd option to help him out.

Kyrie is playing like a top 10 player right now.
He is directing traffic, and then finishing like a boss.
Incredible.
Al needs to show up.In his defense Aldridge has been a handful all season.
21-13 fouls. It'll be a miracle to win this game with this lopsided officiating.
Horford is bad tonight...
Horford and Morris stink tonight, Smart just fouled out, and Aldridge can't miss.
our defense hurts when baynes can't play.Actually think our best defensive lineup has Theiss at the 5
if we could get one more athletic big man to protect the rim...
imagine if we had drafted clint capella instead of james young?
We just might lose by a shot by a 40 year old player.
start doubling Aldrich

Game over.
Freakin' Celtics. Giving up so many stupid offensive rebounds. And Kyrie trying for the hero shots his last two times down the court.
This is where Brad letting them play and not calling TOs in one of those two last possessions kills us. Why not set up an ATO on that last possession when that's what you excel at??
start doubling Aldrich
Shoulda tried that much, much earlier.
Too bad Kyrie lost his touch. Ginobli OTOH has ice in his veins.
Oh Brad. Please have a plan how to guard a simple low post clear-out.
And no, manning up doesn't work. Hasn't worked all night.

CBS shoulda subbed in Theis, rather than Rozier, for defense and rebounding down the stretch.
Aldridge just ate up Horford tonight.
Aldridge made Horford look like a chump all night long, and then Al didn't do jack squat on offense.
Ginobili hits two (essentially halfcourt) heaves.
Celtics got killed on the glass like Game 7 of the 2010 Finals (complete with Pau Gasol still sticking it to us).
Great work.

HORFORD WAS KILLED TONIGHT terrible. just terrible..

Yeah, that was the only frustrating part of the gameplan for me... no doubling even though Aldridge moves so slow. They tried it once (at the end of this 4th quarter) and got a turnover.
I figured we'd lose either tonight or against Detroit next game. Can't win em all.
I'm still mad about the foul discrepancy though. That was a poorly officiated game, even by NBA standards.
Why not let Tatum be the man sometimes? He will be - sooner rather than later - but no need for him to do that just yet.
He just keeps making big shots but cbs doesnt let him finish the game
Tatum hits the big three... Go back to him cbs/kyrie
It's very simple. We don't rebound. We lose.

Yeah I wondered why the spurs had such a good home record, then after tonight's refereeing, I wonder no more.

Once again, practice proves that when Brad's preconceived gameplan falls apart, he really has no idea how to actually coach during the game. It's extremely frustrating to watch.jesus christ koz, do you ever shut up on this single point? "no idea how to actually coach?" this is the sort of statement that undermines so much of what you say about stevens. you really do let your personal agenda interfere with you otherwise good basketball analyses.

I think he would have gotten his against anybody tonight. Al’s defense was solid, but LMA was a beast.
So you think that when your big man is getting killed in isolation, and your star PG is jacking long contested threes, the correct coaching approach is to do nothing and keep your fingers crossed that they'll snap out of it? I thought the Spurs looked like crap when they were in Boston. Now they're 18-8. These guys are going to be right there in the West. This was going to be a tough one to pull out.spurs are a good team. the corpse of ginobelli came alive tonight. tough loss, but the celtics did not play their best ball, yet almost tied it at the end.
Against the bigger, talented centers Horford isn't big enough. Baynes not coming back hurt too.

did they ever say what happened to Baynes? At first I thought he got kicked in the groin-man-area, but during the replay it didn't look like that.

There's always someone who has to say something like this. Like, it's wrong for me to be upset? I don't care if they'd been 26-0 coming into this game; they had a really good chance to beat a very good team on the road, and they screwed it up.
But I guess I can't be upset about a loss unless it's an elimination game in the playoffs, according to some people.

take away our 17 game win streak and we are 5-5!
we need to be winning 3 outta every 4 moving forward and stay out losing streaks. now we did win what? 4 straight before this one? ok time for another streak.
That's just the negative version. Hate to agree with the super negative version of Koz here, but he's spot on with this. This has been one of Stevens' few flaws during his entire tenure in Boston. He simply struggles to make certain in-game adjustments with his rotation, gameplan, and play-calling.
Tonight was just yet another example of this unfolding. It certainly wasn't the only reason we lost, but it definitely played a part.

I think they're letting him grow into the role - plus the team is still trying to establish its identify despite it's record. Or perhaps panic-coaching isn't good coaching. Perhaps it takes more fortitude and wisdom to stay with something even when the results are unexpectedly working against you?
Its his commitment to his philosophy that is the thing that makes him so special. its his commitment to leaving players in the game who are struggling that helps develop them. its his commitment to hard-nosed defense and a specific offense that gets open looks that keeps us in most every game.

True. So who off the bench had the length and toughness needed to grab that rebound? Having seen the probs Al (and others) guarding LA AND Rudy Gay were having why put in Rozier who was nothing more than a decoy down the stretch instead of Theis?
Or perhaps panic-coaching isn't good coaching. Perhaps it takes more fortitude and wisdom to stay with something even when the results are unexpectedly working against you?But see, that's not panic coaching. San Antonio showed you this game that they can beat you with Aldridge in the post. It worked, the entire game, almost every time. Take that away and make them beat you some other way.

True. So who off the bench had the length and toughness needed to grab that rebound? Having seen the probs Al (and others) guarding LA AND Rudy Gay were having why put in Rozier who was nothing more than a decoy down the stretch instead of Theis?
Its why I dont like Marcus Morris in there with Al Horford either. There are certain lineups we run that just dont box out and rebound the basketball. Popovich took full advantage with two legit 7 footers out there and drummond always has a field day with us playing that lineup.
If Baynes can't play the next one I dearly hope they slot Theis in his place instead of going back to morris starting.
That's just the negative version. The super negative will come when I start complaining about leaving Rozier in too long at the start of the 4th. :PSo you think that when your big man is getting killed in isolation, and your star PG is jacking long contested threes, the correct coaching approach is to do nothing and keep your fingers crossed that they'll snap out of it? Well, congratulations, it didn't really work.Once again, practice proves that when Brad's preconceived gameplan falls apart, he really has no idea how to actually coach during the game. It's extremely frustrating to watch.jesus christ koz, do you ever shut up on this single point? "no idea how to actually coach?" this is the sort of statement that undermines so much of what you say about stevens. you really do let your personal agenda interfere with you otherwise good basketball analyses.
just give it a rest.
I'd be happy to give it a rest, but unfortunately he just keeps doing it.
Stevens has been doing a lot of things right (you just have to when you're winning so many games), but sometimes he just doesn't look like he has an idea how to adjust in-game.
Agreed to a certain extent. But he needs to make adjustments when things clearly are not working - like forcing the ball out of LMA's hands by doubling in the post after he had scored numerous times over Horford.
The most egregious example was last year in the playoffs versus Cleveland where he refused to adjust pick and roll coverage, continuing to switch everything. Oh how I loved to watch Olynyk try to guard LeBron on the perimeter.
Stevens is a top notch coach, but he can still get better.
SA was small, Baynes got whacked in the groin, and he wasn't doing much other than hacking people anyhow...We didn't make open shots, and we didn't rebound the basketball, therefore we didnt deserve to win this one.
Simple as that. Onto the next.

I don't think anything brilliant in a philosophy which says, "Hey, Aldridge scored at will every time he posted up, so we're just going to let them do that three time in a row in crunch time because... that will develop 32-year-old Horford?"
I can maybe understand not overreacting to a bad shot or two from Kyrie (Pierce did that as much as anyone in his time), and trusting that he's too good to keep doing that. But keeling over defensively and just taking it is inexcusable. Do something. Make someone else beat you with a jumpshot.

I disagree. He played it perfectly, but we missed key shots at the end. If we double, they get 3s. Its as simple as that. Instead of wide open 3s, he allowed Horford to force Aldridge into bad shots. This worked multiple times at the end. One ended in a TO and another in a miss. We just missed the shots at the other end that would have started to seal the game.
Again, the game looks a lot different when we miss shots.

First of all, Aldridge was 11 for 20. Lets not act like he scored "every time."
Yes, SA showed they can beat you if you have a back-to-the basket big with quick moves and mid-range fade-aways, but only if you shoot sub30% from 3. If we make more 3s, we don't care if Aldridge is scoring in the post, because we are trading 3s for 2s. We would win handily.
The point wasn't to "develop" Horford. You know I wasn't saying that phrase about Horford. The point was that it gave us the best opportunity to win the game. Guess what ... if we made more shots, we would have!
Yeah, no one can stop anybody from criticizing him, but to act as if the reasons he does the things he does are wrong, and yours are right.I can promise you that sometimes even Brad Stevens is wrong :P
It always amazes me how many people here criticize Brad, as if when they sat down with him, he wouldn't have great answers to the things he does wrong.
We literally have a consensus top 5 coach, really top 3, and people here act like they know things he doesn't.

Come on now.
Great work.
Nice melt. We're 22-5.
Relax.
LOL does not make him wrong. the p;rocess was crap tonight in many ways. many positives also.
Thank you. So tired of the "there's no room for criticism" crowd.
I'm more than happy for constructive criticism. I didn't think "al got owned and played a crap game", a reference to the 2010 finals, and finishing the post with "great work" was particularly constructive at all. It sounded like a good old fashioned melt to me. This forum is rife with posts after losses that end up looking ridiculous after a deep breath.
The team is 22-5, Im not about to begin with "great work, losers" after they lose an away game to a good basketball team.

This logic has always been so poor and fundamentally flawed. It's literally the "appeal to authority fallacy" applied to Brad, i.e. it's not a sound argument by the very laws of deductive logic.
You can cover your eyes to Brad's (few) faults all you want, but don't chastise others for not subscribing to that fatalistic philosophy of blind agreement.
Saying that he has faults that he needs to work on is not inconsistent with also thinking he's an elite coach. He's clearly an elite coach, but he has certain flaws like every coach does. It's just that some of his flaws show up more prominently in some games more than others, like tonight.
I tend not be concerned about coaching, specifically in game adjustments. Brad probably wants to keep things consistent, but also, certain schemes often get saved for the playoffs.I guess that's the price you pay for trying to keep everyone under 33 minutes. Let's just hope there's some actual benefit from this down the road.
My only qualms with Brad have been his regular season rotations and substitution patterns. Our bench just loses so many leads. I've just never understood why he doesn't stagger the starters' minutes more.

The silver lining is the cavs lost tonight so it equalized our loss. They're are only threat to the #1 seed if we're honest
We can't win em all.
My take away was inconsistency is the mark of typical bench players but starters need to win it. This game saw starters and bench play under par. Add in some calls and loses happen.
is that the celtics are the better team and would win a seven game series.
Welp, I think I'm glad I missed this one.
