We tried that, and it resulted in all kinds of ranting and complaining that welcome posts were clogging up the latest forum topics.  I fought the good fight for awhile, but what the membership wants, the membership gets (occasionally).

I still think they're a good thing, as well, but even when they were showing up in LTP, probably only 5% or less of those type of posts got any sort of response.

Yeh, I imagined as much, but I'm thinking maybe of finding a different solution.

I'll work this out a bit later on, because I think this deserves some more attention.

Yeh I was thinking: maybe add a field underneath the latest posts thing, where you have the latest posts in these topics, excluding the initial post. So maybe only show them when there's a respond post?

Just a thought, and I might get a better idea later on. We'll see ;)

But I'm keeping these in mind.
