Boston Celtics (23-7) at Phoenix Suns (20-12)
Wednesday, December 30
9:00 PM ET
Game #31, Road Game #17
TV:  NBA TV, CSN-NE, FSA
Radio:  KTAR, WEEI
US Airways Center

Although the Phoenix Suns home is 15 years old, it looks as if it is one of the newest arenas in the NBA. Prior to moving into US Airways Center, the Suns played at the 13,000 seat Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The team had played there since their inception in 1968. By the late 1980s a new large state of the art basketball only arena was needed for the Suns. Construction on the $90 million arena began in 1988 and was paid for through city bonds and loans. Officials from the team toured NBA arenas across the league looking for the best features to incorporate into their new arena. America West paid $26 million over 30 years in 1992 to buy the naming rights to the facility.
On November 3, 1992, the Phoenix Suns played their first game at America West Arena winning against the Los Angeles Clippers. In November 2005, America West Arena was renamed US Airways Center after US Airways bought America West. The arena has a seating capacity of over 19,000 that includes 2,270 clubs seats and 88 luxury suites.

Key Matchups
  vs
Rajon Rondo vs Steve Nash
Rondo gets a chance to show what he can do against one of the premier PG's in the league and a 2 time MVP.  He should have a speed advantage over Nash, but he will have to work on the defensive end as Nash can burn you from anywhere on the floor if you give him a step.  Rondo is coming off of an excellent game vs the Warriors, but tweaked a hamstring so that may become a factor in this game.

   vs
Kevin Garnett vs Amare Stoudamire
This is a battle of two of the league's top power forwards.  KG looked a step slow on defense in the Warriors game, which could be from fatigue or he could still be battling back pain from his fall a couple of games back.  The Celtics need KG on defense especially in this game as Amare is averaging over 20 points per game and is one of the Suns' key weapons.

Honorable Mention
Celtics Bench vs Suns Bench
The Suns have a very good starting five and the two starting units match up fairly well.   But with all the injuries on the Celtics, the Suns' bench has an advantage.  Jared Dudley is becoming one of the top subs in the league and leads the league in 3 point percentage.  Leandro Barbosa is faster than anyone on the Celtics second unit and will give anyone who guards him fits.  They also have a very good center in Robin Lopez and an up and coming PG in Goran Dragic.  The Celtics'  bench must come to work in this one or by the time the starters return, the game will be out of reach.

Team Connections
Eddie House played for Phoenix during the 2005-06 season
Grant Hill played for Doc Rivers in Orlando from 2000-04
Grant Hill and Shelden Williams are former Duke Blue Devils
Steve Nash and Marquis Daniels were teammates in Dallas during the 2003-04 season.

Game Notes
• The Suns are currently leading the season series 1-0; Celtics won the season series 2-0 against the Suns in 2008-09
• Rajon Rondo led the Celtics with 27.5 points per game last season
• Steve Nash averaged 15.5 points per game in the two match-ups
• It marked the first time since the 2000-01 season that the Celtics had swept the season series.
• The Celtics are leading the all-time series 61-48 with the Celtics 35-18 at home

The Suns are coming off a big 15 win over the Lakers while the Celtics are coming off a close loss to the Warriors.   The Suns, however,  lost to those same Warriors on Christmas Day 132-127.

The Suns are a tough team to face in their building.  They have a 12-2 home record and have won 20 of their last 23 home games.  The Celtics are 13-3 away with 2 of those losses coming in their last two games on this road trip.

The Suns are a high scoring team and are averaging 109.5 points per game, good for first in the league.  They are averaging an even better 115.2 points per game at home.  However, they don't play a lot of defense, preferring to outscore their opponents.   The Celtics will not be able to beat the Suns in a shoot out.  They need to find their defense and find a way to stop the Suns running game if they hope to win this game.

Keys to the Game
Defense - This is the key to every win this season and to a championship as well.  The Celtics played defense in spurts against the Clippers and the Warriors, and they lost both games.  If they try to play defense in spurts in this game they will probably lose this one as well.  The Celtics need to especially guard the perimeter as the Suns can be dangerous from out there.  Jared Dudley leads the league in 3 point percentage.   The Suns have made 10 or more 3 pointers in 19 of their games this season.

Ball Movement -  The Celtics need to move the ball and find the open man in order to stretch the Suns weak defenses.  They also need to stop taking quick 3's and try to work the ball inside.  If they get the ball into the post they will be able to score, draw the foul or kick out for an open jumper.   Shooting 3 pointers every time down just isn't working for this team and they need to abandon that strategy and get the ball into the paint.

Crash the Boards
- The Celtics must make an effort to grab rebounds, especially on the offensive end, in this game.   By grabbing offensive rebounds it will prevent the Suns from getting out on the break and it will also give the Celtics second chance points.    Rebounding is mostly desire and effort and the team that wants it most will win the rebounding battle.

Play 48 Minutes - In their last two games, the Celtics have built a lead only to ease up and allow their opponents back into the game.  The Celtics must play 48 minutes.  They can't let up if they get a lead and they can't come out flat and play catch up the rest of the game.  They have to keep their focus and intensity for the entire game.

X-Factor

Focus and Fatigue
The Celtics looked like a tired team against the Warriors.  They have a day off to get some rest before this game, but Doc has been playing his starters too many minutes and it is showing in their jumpers falling short.  Hopefully the Celtics focus will be strong enough to overcome their fatigue.

Looking forward to this game SOO much that I want to be the first one to post this too:

TP FL!

.edit: That said, this should be good. Posted this somewhere else too, but it should be a revenge game. We had 2 tough losses and want to come out the gates guns blazing and never looking back. On top of that, these guys manhandled us earlier in the season and I want them to go down.

Also, the Suns are my fave' team right after the C's.

So go Suns, go C's!

suns play so well at home....this will be a huge huge challenge and maybe a righting of the ship...or it could be the end of a 1-3 roadie and a 3 game losing streak :-\

KG always plays like he has a chip on his shoulder VS Amare...remember that sick facial that KG gave him last year in PHX? Turned around on the low block, took like two dribbles and threw it down right over him, lol....and then Amare pushed him and got a technical ;D.

As long as we can keep Amare in check and watch Channing Frye with those threes we'll be fine..we will win.

OH---and watch Jason Richardson..that guy is a Certified CELTICS KILLER......modern day Andrew Toney.

Like you Kiorrik I like the Suns and I enjoy watching them play but two losses in a row is enoug and I hope we get back on track in good fashion tonight...

It's going to be tough since the Suns are a dangerous team, especially at home, but we have revenge in mind and our guys certainly don't want to lose 3 in a row. I hope they execute better in the second half and in the 4th because it's frustrating to get a big lead and to see it vanish quickly to finally lose the game...

With that said I don't want Doc to overplay Ray, which he has done the last two games. We must take advantage of our physical presence in the paint against Stoudemire and Frye.

I will probably be there live. TP FL and go Celtics, let's get a win tonight, which would be huge considering our recent struggles!

This game could get ugly really fast. Not the right team to play with all the injuries. Rondo (hamstring), Baby is out (I Think), Pierce is out, Marquis is our. We need someone to step up, but Who? Scal? I don't feel good about this game.

Nothing to lose in this one. We just need to let it all hang out and let Eddie House go for 30, maybe he'll have to get 50.
