Now that Kyrie is out the door for nothing.  And we've seen Sexton have a fine rookie season, if you could turn back time would you keep the #8 overall pick and IT?  My assumption would be we draft Sexon at #8 and let IT walk.

Would the Celtics today look better or worse if that had happened?

I'm happy with Kemba, Smart and Edwards at point.

I'd rather have Shai G-A over both.

In order of preference:

1. SGA

2. Two years of Kyrie

3. Sexton
'23 Historical Draft: Orlando Magic.

PG: Terry Porter (90-91) / Steve Francis (00-01)
SG: Joe Dumars (92-93) / Jeff Hornacek (91-92) / Jerry Stackhouse (00-01)
SF: Brandon Roy (08-09) / Walter Davis (78-79)
PF: Terry Cummings (84-85) / Paul Millsap (15-16)
C: Chris Webber (00-01) / Ralph Sampson (83-84) / Andrew Bogut (09-10)

My preference would have been move up a spot or two from 8 (Maybe 8+Rozier) to get Wendell carter Junior (AKA the next Horford) who went 7. But thats just hindsight, I was for the Kyrie deal when it happened.

Regardless of how Kyrie turned out, I'd take 2 years of him over Sexton any day. To be frank, I never see Sexton ever becoming more then a 20pt scorer on a bad team.
2023 No Top 75 Fantasy Draft Los Angeles Clippers
PG: Dennis Johnson / Jo Jo White / Stephon Marbury
SG: Sidney Moncrief / World B. Free
SF: Chris Mullin / Ron Artest
PF: Detlef Schrempf / Tom Chambers / Buck Williams
C: Ben Wallace / Andrew Bynum

Sexton is career backup point guard at best.

Why do you think the cavs spent another high pick on another point guard?

Sexton because there wouldn't have been regression on this team or a need to keep guys like Rozier and Morris. Irving set the team back.

But Sexton is a very average player

Yep, I highly doubt that Ainge would have drafted Sexton.

SGA may very well have a higher ceiling than Tatum/Brown. I'd take SGA over 2 years of Kyrie in a heartbeat!

well it isn't just 2 years of Sexton.  It is whomever Ainge drafted or traded for, Zizic, Crowder, and Thomas.  It is 2 years better growth from Rozier, Brown, and Tatum.  It is 2 years without the headache of Irving.

When you think of it like that, I think the trade isn't made, especially when you see the lack of success Boston had with Irving.  If he had led the team on some deep playoff runs, then sure, you make the trade, but he didn't, and then he left Boston with nothing.

I could probably be convinced to take SGA over Brown full stop!

If Danny had knowledge that Kemba would sign here, so Danny could make corresponding moves, of course you choose the pick over Kyrie.

This being a hindsight thread, I don't know how everyone isn't choosing Sexton. We were good for a couple of years with Kyrie as the starting PG, but last year wasn't exactly 'fun.' The one season we did go deep in the playoffs, Kyrie was injured (although I do acknowledge that he helped us land a good seed in the playoffs).

Taking it a step further, can we assume that Hayward never would have been injured? The pass that led to the injury was from Kyrie and he was met by Crowder (who would have still been on the team, or traded to another). I know that's not fair, but it's pretty safe to assume we would have All-Star Hayward for the last two seasons instead.

I am also of the belief that Ainge wouldn't have taken Sexton (either SGA or traded up for Carter or JJJ), but for the purposes of this exercise, I will assume it's Sexton. And, even in some strange world where the Hayward injury still happens, then I still take Sexton. That's how worthless Kyrie was - even preventing us from making an AD trade.
