For a minute I added George and Leo but it was only on one season so obviously the market spoke on that one.
Bob Newhart Show....= Chicago therapist
Newhart = Vermont Inn Keeper (featuring Larry, Darryl, and Darryl)
No spoilers involving endings. Hmmm....maybe enough time has passed, but no theories about one show actually technically being the other.

But one of the endings was the best ending ever...

Wasn't it the ending to both shows?

That is VERY philosophical liam!

As an aside...a few years ago I worked in downtown Chicago everyday and would drive by the towers that Newhart supposedly lived and worked in every day. I would point them out to anyone who visited from out of town. Very few recognized them or knew what the hell I was talking about.

Two of the best opening themes ever. People don't realize Henry Mancini wrote the Newhart VT one. Top notch.

I stayed at the Vermont Inn two years ago!

A lifetime of TP's for the topic.

Those towers are one of the ways I still recognize Chicago in movies....

It must be decided and a poll on CB is the only way

Also it is in practical terms the ending to both shows. It's probably the best television ending ever. I did love the end to both The Dick Van Dyke show and The Mary Tyler Moore show. Two very awesome endings.

by the time the 2nd show debuted I was old enough to date, so I didn't see as much of it.

In my case, I think I was already married so I rarely ever watched his 2nd show.
The original was one of the greatest TV shows ever, but that was mainly due to Bob Newhart himself. The show was built around his shtick, but had many other great characters. It was also one of the first shows to show a married couple in the same bed together. IIRC, on the Dick Van Dyke show they had separate twin beds in their bedroom.

I only ever watched Newhart because I was too young for the Bob Newhart Show. I was still a kid while Newhart was on. I remember watching the finale and my parents had to explain the ending to me.

I find the Bob Newhart Show way way way more depressing. Mrs. eja theorizes it's because he's a therapist, hence there are more problems on the show. I theorize the characters are in many ways more pathetic and singular. I sorta hope it gets better the way Newhart got better in Season 3 after they wrote Kirk off the show

Mrs. Saltlover likes Newhart more, although feels she hasn’t seen enough Bob Newhart Show to form a conclusive opinion. However, she feels that Newhart has better supporting roles, and also with the inn set-up allowed for more entertaining single-episode characters. We especially like George and Stephanie.
Also, the Henry Mancini theme music is first rate for Newhart.

eja jr the other day was listening to the Bob Newhart Show theme song and said "I think I could play this on my saxophone" and I thought "Omg. I have the single awesomest kid in the history of time. Move over Jesus. The #1 spot has been claimed."

Tp for an off the wall thread. I was too young to watch the original show, I only saw reruns, but I think it was a more interesting show to me.
-
I used to watch the original show. If I am not mistaken it always played right after the Mary Tyler Moore Show. That was a quality hour of television.

Larry, Darryl, and Darryl. Anything for a Buck. Loved it.

Ok. That does it. Bob's Tv wife Emily (actress Suzanne Plescette) drives me nuts. Borderline ruins the show. Just a bossy passive aggressive ditz character.
Possibly my least favorite TV wife ever up there with Rozanne, who was at least sassy and clever and sooommmeeetimes tough.
She is almost as bad as Raymond's mom.
There. I said it. I finally said it.

It turned out it was all The Bob Newhart show in the end so it's a moot point.
