The way they categorize players seems absurd to me too, but although their methodology is probably more suited to developing players it seems interesting. I mean, they have put a lot of work in this.

It's honestly the most hilarious (and, well, useless) categorisation.

Marcus Morris is a scrub. Marc Gasol is an average starter. Dirk Nowitzki is a defensive specialist. Klay Thompson is an average starter. Dragic is a rotation player. CJ McCollum is an average starter. Tatum is somehow an All-Star while Brown is an up-and-comer. Eric Bledsoe is a borderline All-Star.

I think I could go on for hours about just how stupid the categorisation of these players is.
'23 Historical Draft: Orlando Magic.

PG: Terry Porter (90-91) / Steve Francis (00-01)
SG: Joe Dumars (92-93) / Jeff Hornacek (91-92) / Jerry Stackhouse (00-01)
SF: Brandon Roy (08-09) / Walter Davis (78-79)
PF: Terry Cummings (84-85) / Paul Millsap (15-16)
C: Chris Webber (00-01) / Ralph Sampson (83-84) / Andrew Bogut (09-10)

Wasn't Smart a future all-star based on their projections from last year?

Anyway, not sure how a player can be an MVP candidate when he is clearly the 2nd best player on his own team. Simmons does fill up the stat sheet, though, and Philly will be a good team - so, who knows?

I doubt it. There are many guys ahead of him, all of which can shoot. Simmons would have to take monumental strides in terms of his jumpshot for him to even be in the conversation. Let alone his pretty lazy defence

CARMELO ratings are some of the worst stuff fivethirtyeight put out. Well, that and their presidential predictions.

Not going to click the link because I think these rankings are silly.

But I do think Simmons has MVP potential. He sees the game a step ahead of most guys and his combination of size and skill is incredibly rare. He had a great rookie year and got exposed against the Celtics. How he responds this season will be an important indicator of how the rest of his career will go.

He’s very talented and already a valuable player. For selfish reasons I hope he never develops a reliable jump shot. It’s hard, maybe impossible, to evaluate on tv but I did not see the cold-blooded killer mentality he’d need to reach the MVP level. To me, the MVP is almost always (among other things) the guy you would most want to have the ball with one possession left in the game. Possible someone in the top 2-3 guys if he is really unique in some other area.

I'm positive I heard the same criticism of Lebron and Kevin Durant when they were young. It's a thing that can develop.

Might could be. And yet, if I needed a bucket from last year’s rookie class, I’d put the ball in Mitchell or Tatum’s hands first. Donovan doesn’t have all Simmons’ gifts but his drive to win was clearly visible in the playoffs. Despite Embiid coming up empty with his last shot I’d give it to him over Simmons.

all NBA players are MVP candidates.
