Looks like he is financially set as an individual, but I don't know about his performance being a Dodger in the long-term. Maybe they bring back a couple of World Series titles but that'll be that.

What's with all these monster-like contracts across the sports world during covid season? Patrick Mahomes and now Betts lol

I think the Dodgers would be quite happy with that.

Couple of World Series titles in a 12 year span are 100% worth it.

Yeah, throwing around “a couple of World Series titles” like it’s nothing is weird

Only 2 or 3 World Series titles for 12 years of commitment wouldn't that be a dangerous signing though lol

No, I don’t think it would.  It’s really hard to win the World Series, much less 2-3.  The Dodgers haven’t even won one in Mookie Betts’ lifetime.

All of my Dodgers-fan friends here in La-La Land are dying for just one World Series. 1988 was a long time ago in sports years.

Not at all. I’d throw out pretty much any sort of 12 year max deal if it locked in 2-3 championships for Boston

My heart wanted Mookie in Boston for his career.  My mind was wary of signing him to such a long term deal.  He relies so much on quick twitch athleticism it will be interesting to see what he looks like in his 30s.  For the next few years or so he should still be fantastic though I’m not convinced quite as good as he was in Fenway.  Fenway was perfect for him if you take a look at home and away splits.

seems like they could have, right?

All we heard while Mookie was in Boston was that he did not want to sign long term and that he wanted to become a free agent.  We don't know what the Sox offered (and Mookie turned down) but to me, this could be one of two things:

1.  Mookie did not want Boston long term and is happier in LA
2.  Mookie had a change of heart after seeing how quickly things can change with something like Covid.

I actually suspect a little of all contributed.

That’s *way* lower than his projected market was.  Screw the Sox for being cheap.  Covid obviously played a huge part here, but you don’t trade top-2 players when you’re turning $50 to $75 million in profits.

What an abomination of a deal.  Price opted out of the season, so the Dodgers don’t even have to pay him this season.

This, a thousand times over.    Screw John Henry & the Sox for getting rid of Betts.

I liked Betts and would have loved to see him remain a Red Sox for life. I do believe the Red Sox made the right call in trading him when they did. I also believe Betts had every intention on leaving Boston, and a desire to get to free agency wasn’t the reason he never signed the supposedly multiple extension offers from Boston. If I recall, the Red Sox last offer was something like 10 years and $300M. I’m sure the Dodgers offer was lower than the 12 year and $365M contract that was agreed to. It seems to me, both teams valued Mookie fairly similarly.

Time will tell, which team wins out. Is this the beginning of the Red Sox making a course correction and fixing their payroll by going under the luxury tax line? I will never accuse the team of being cheap, as they have consistently been one of the highest payroll teams in MLB. How many years will a 5’9” Betts max out his size for LA? Will he be their version of Dustin Pedroia? An undersized player who’s body gave out on him and never lived up to the contract he signed for? I loved Dustin, but his contract has basically been dead money for years and is still going.

Agree 100%. His speed-dependent game will age poorly and that contract will be an albatross in a few years.

And the Sox aren't going anywhere if they have no payroll left for pitching. Dombrowski left this team in a tough spot. Hopefully Chaim Bloom still has some of that Tampa Bay magic left in him to get creative here.
