The 'bag of balls' turned out to be a pretty solid package

How so?

4 first round pick swaps from a team with a very obvious and significant decline imminent could be very valuable, and 6 seconds should be decently valuable too (as we've seen by our own moves)
'23 Historical Draft: Orlando Magic.

PG: Terry Porter (90-91) / Steve Francis (00-01)
SG: Joe Dumars (92-93) / Jeff Hornacek (91-92) / Jerry Stackhouse (00-01)
SF: Brandon Roy (08-09) / Walter Davis (78-79)
PF: Terry Cummings (84-85) / Paul Millsap (15-16)
C: Chris Webber (00-01) / Ralph Sampson (83-84) / Andrew Bogut (09-10)

There is world where none of those 1st rounders even convey, but yes, a much better deal than we all initially suspected. Washington won the deal by getting out of that Beal contract that they never should have signed in the first place

It's definitely possible that none convey (especially if the Wizards never get it together, which seems plausible), but by spreading them out all the way to 2030 they at least give themselves a good shot. I can imagine a world where the Suns have lost their big 3 (or 2 of their big 3) by the time the 2028 and 2030 picks roll around, if Washington is a playoff team by then they could get some moderate value

Still, just imagine what they could have gotten for him if it weren't for that contract. Talk about shooting themselves in the foot
I'm bitter.

Even that 2030 pick isn’t looking so hot.  If the Suns finish above the second apron in 2024 and 2025 (which seems near a given with Durant, Booker, and Beal on the roster), that pick will automatically drop down to 30, regardless of how the suns play in 2030.  2028 is the best bet for a meaningful swap.

Yeah, the current tally for what they got now that Chris Paul is flipped is looking much more reasonable:

Jordan Poole
Ryan Rollins
Patrick Baldwin Jr.
2030 GSW first-round pick (protected)
2027 GSW second-round pick

Landrey Shamet
Cash considerations
(6 Second Round Picks)
2024 second-round pick
2025 second-round pick
2026 second-round pick
2027 second-round pick
2028 second-round pick
2030 second-round pick
(4 first round pick swaps)
2024 first-round pick swap
2026 first-round pick swap
2028 first-round pick swap
2030 first-round pick swap

They sent out Beale, Isaiah Todd, Jordan Goodwin, and Trayce Jackson-Davis.

Jordan Poole is a decent player, contract notwithstanding.  The rest of the players, not so much.  The Second round picks and swaps are hard to gauge right now in terms of value, but there are a lot of them.  It is a lot less than I thought they might be able to get.  People here were actually suggesting trading Brown for Beale.  I think the bag of ball things came from thinking that WAS was going to just release Chris Paul, that he had no value.  But instead, Chris Paul got Jordan Poole and a couple more picks/prospects.

What I found interesting is to compare this to the Marcus Smart trade.  It is a 3-way, so it is hard to say exactly what the Celtics got for Smart but it is very clear what MEM gave up for Smart; Tyus Jones and two picks.  After more draft night swapping, this ended up being what Smart went for:

Tyus Jones
2024  1st — GSW (Protected 1-4 in 2024)
2024 2nd — Dallas
2025 2nd — Best of Detroit, Golden State, and Washington
2026 2nd — Best of Minnesota, New York, New Orleans, and Portland
2027 2nd — Atlanta

So a better first round pick, 4 vs. 6 seconds, a comparable player, but no swaps.
