Robert Sarver has begun to tell some council members that he will relocate the Phoenix Suns to Seattle or Las Vegas if the City Council of Phoenix votes down a plan to spend $150 million to upgrade Talking Stick Arena.

As of now, the arena plan does not have the votes to pass.

Phoenix Mayor Thelda Williams and Councilwomen Laura Pastor and Debra Stark have asked for a postponement of the vote.

Talking Stick Resort Arena was built in 1992.

Most team owners are cockroaches.

Billionaires who hold a beloved community asset to ransom so they can make tax payers pay for their teams stadium and still bring in all the profits.

Bucks ownership group did the same thing recently and Milwaukee government caved in (as most do). Stan Kroenke takes the cake though, a man from St Louis steals the Rams from the city because he can make massive profits in Los Angles.

i live near Seattle.  It would be nice to have a team here, but I would rather it be the grizzlies or pelicans that move.   The Suns have history.

I am all for bashing owners when they try to extort tax dollars to pay for new stadiums, but calling a professional sports team a "community asset" is ridiculous.  Maybe the town should buy the team if they really want to prevent it from leaving.

That is terrible. The Phoenix Suns have been a great franchise over last 50 years. It would be awful to see them leave Phoenix. They gotta stop these greedy owners.

The City owns the arena.  It was built in 1992 the only major renovations were in 2003 and involved mostly exterior related improvements.  It is an old arena.  This idea that it shouldn't be updated is strange and since the City owns it, the City should in fact be on the hook for most of the improvements (the Suns have offered to pay 80 million in addition to the City's 150 million).  If the Suns owned the arena, then sure, they should pay, but the reality is they don't, Phoenix does and Phoenix gets a nice long lease with the Suns to make back that money, they get the restaurant and hotel dollars, the gas dollars, etc.  The Suns lease is up in 2022.  They get the upgrades, they re-up the lease for at least 15 years.  They don't, I expect them to leave (and to be fair Sarver has been talking about a new arena or at least significant upgrades for years, this isn't some new thing).

Of course a greedy corporate entity at the peak of the most profitable run in its leagues history is attempting to strong-arm taxpayers into covering their bills.

No taxpayer dollars should be spent on corporate infrastructure without stake in that corporate entity being offered to those taxpayers in return.  That should simply be a law at this point.

It's just the way of the world.

Portland, OR has offered to build the Tampa Bay Rays an entirely new stadium while Tampa has declined the option to put up just half the money in a new Ybor City location (MUCH better location than St. Pete - would draw many more people). Instead, the Rays are going to continue playing in the totally outdated Tropicana Field until 'new plans' are released.

Team owners maybe a little scumbaggy, but when another city is willing to foot the cost for a major thing like a stadium and the current city will not, how can you really blame them? Stadiums are expensive. While not necessarily fair, people should be pointing the finger at the current city.

It isn't corporate infrastructure.  The City owns the Arena.

For a whopping, what, 9 seasons and you'd be hard-pressed to find someone still alive or under the age of 80 that would associate that organization with CLE first and not LA where they've spent the bulk of their team history.
