The Memphis Grizzlies and Phoenix Suns are engaged in trade talks centered on forward Rudy Gay, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.
The Grizzlies have been shopping Gay to multiple teams, and found an interested trade partner with the Suns, sources said.
There's no framework of a possible deal in place, but the Grizzlies have expressed a strong desire that any package involving Gay include Suns forward Jared Dudley and future first-round draft picks, sources said.
In an effort to avoid paying luxury tax in the short term, as well as get off the $16.8 million and $19.3 million owed Gay in the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons, new Memphis management has aggressively shopped Gay. The Grizzlies have made proposals on Gay to several teams, front-office sources told Yahoo! Sports.
Hmm wonder if the c's could get in on this and acquire Gortat?
Suns sends: Dudley , Gortat,filler, 1st
Suns get : Gay, Bass
Mem sends: Gay
Mem gets : Dudley, Lee , boston 1st,suns 1st
Bos sends: Lee, Bass,1st,

Because it's Wojo, I'll pay attention to this rumor.
Sounds intriguing. But what happens to Memphis' offense without Gay? More burden on Conley/ZBo/Gasol?
-
If the Suns are going to acquire Rudy Gay I don't see why they'd be eager to move Gortat. I know he and the coach have had issues though.
I don't see us bringing enough to make it worth either team's time though.

Yeah, though their offense hasn't been hot stuff with Gay anyways.
I guess they figure they'd be better of with just 3 point shooters instead of Gay? Dudley can do that for them, I wonder what the other pieces would be though.

Would Memphis want to include Wes, if the goal is to trim payroll? Is he required to make the numbers work?
Assuming the Suns do get Rudy, what does their projected lineup look like? Dragic/Gay/Gortat/Scola . . . ?

I actually think this makes a lot of sense for all teams involved. Might need some tweaking, depending on the personal preferences of each team, but it seems to work.

This deal actually might work even better:
Boston gets Gortat
Memphis gets Dudley, Lee, and a first rounder from Boston and Phoenix
Phoenix gets Gay and Melo
For Boston needs no explanation. Turn spare parts to fill a need.
For Memphis, they get two guys who fit well with their identity, but make a lot less money than Gay. Lee also can be insurance in case the lose Allen this summer.
And Phoenix gets a quality wing to build around.

nice Chris, I had something very similar in my trade checker a second ago (I had Melo going to Memphis but this way saves them more money)
the only thing is it gives them 2 SGs to add to Tony Allen so that might be too much?

either deal sounds great but not seeing the appeal for PHX. Gay's deal is just horrible. he's a decent player but not worth that much salary. They aren't really close to having a contending team so why add a decent player on a really bad deal? are tehy planning to keep him after the deal expires but at half the price? can't see any other line of reasoning behind it.

Dragic, Gay, Morris is a nice core.
How so? Dragic is a fine guard but 15/6.5 isn't going to bring you very far. Morris is young but under 42% shooting on your way to 8/4 in 20 minutes isn't a nice piece. I'm not really understanding this trade. Phoenix is sending out young assets and cap space for a guy who is expensive on a long-term contract and will best-case bring them to #9-10 in the conference. Memphis is saying screw this year and build for the future around...Marc Gasol and an aging Randolph? Best case is they get back to where they are now. They have a legit shot at it, especially with one or two minor moves (Terry?). Why give up on that? I get the financials, but a team winning should look to make one minor change to solidify position and the bad team should be trying to plan for the future, not the other way around.
To me, both teams end up worse off.

I dont know actually. Im just curious to be quite honest.
He's been bad in PHX and im just wondering maybe Memphis would be a good fit. But I really have no idea.

To a couple people who asked-- I think this does make sense for Phoenix. They have absolutely no ability to attract any star-level players. If they were to get one, they would have to overpay them far worse than Rudy Gay may currently be overpaid. If they can acquire a player of Gay's level by doing these types of trade, I think they should do it.
-
So far this year, Jared Dudley has been superior to Rudy Gay. Rudy hasn't really turned in a good season in almost 2 years (he has big games, occasionally, but not consistently). Look at the numbers:
Dudley- 49% from the field, 38.2% from 3, 80.8% from the line, true shooting 60%
Gay- 41% from the field, 32% from 3, 80% from the line, true shooting 48.7%
Dudley- 1.35 PPS
Gay- 1.08 PPS (ouch)
Gay is a better rebounder, but Dudley is a better passer (more assists, fewer turnovers).
The only thing that Gay has over Dudley is that he is a much better defender. Dudley doesn't do much on that end, but at least for this season he has been far superior offensively.

This is an interesting point, and while I don't disagree with it (or agree with it either), if it is true, Sarver needs to look in the mirror.
Phoenix should be a big draw for free agents. Great weather, golf, etc. While it may not be as exciting as NY or LA, there are a ton of players who would love to live there.
But, no one wants to go there, because they have a notoriously cheap owner. No one wants to sign there and know that they won't shell out the rest of the money to make them a real contender.

Eh, its hard to compare them offensively, since they have such dramatically different roles. Gay is asked to be the primary perimeter scorer for Memphis, and is keyed on defensively, while Dudley basically gets open shots off of plays by other guys.

While all that may be true, you neglected to mention career scoring averages:
Gay: 17.9 ppg
Dudley: 8.8 ppg
That's the impetus for Phoenix: getting a bona fide scorer.

Looking at those shooting numbers for Gay, and I can't help but wonder...whats the difference between him and Jeff Green, other than opportunity to be the primary scorer?
If you were the Suns GM, why not just try to trade Gortat straight up for Green, save a ton of money for your penny pinching owner, and a couple draft picks for yourself, and let someone else worry about Gay?
-
This might make it worth Phoenix's while.
Memphis gets Lee, Dudley, and pick from Phx.
Phoenix gets Gay, Bass, Melo, and pick from Bos.
Boston gets Gortat and Beasley
Memphis gets a SG AND a SF that can spread the floor and play D.
Phoenix basically swaps the Bass contract for Beasley and gets a prospect and pick. They move a guy who doesn't want to be there. They also get their franchise guy.
Boston gets a talented center and also takes back Beasley (same contract as Bass) who has talent and might just blossom under Rivers and from being in a veteran locker room for the first time.
Anyways with the emergence of Sully and addition of Gortat (Kg starts at PF now) Bass would be seeing reduced minutes. So its basically the same contract sitting on the bench, but its just named Beasley instead of Bass.

Selling tickets. Rudy Gay is a sexier name then Jeff Green. He is also a more exciting player.

Just for fun, here are the per 36 minute stats for Green and Rudy over their careers. Tell, is it worth an extra 7-10 million per year, plus the extra assets to get Gay? I'm not so sure.
Green: 14.8 pts, 5.9 rebs, 1.7 ast, .443 FG, .337 3pt, .774 FT
Gay: 17.8 pts, 5.7 rebs, 2.0 ast, .453 FG, .345 3pt, .773 FT
And normally I don't like per36 minute stats, but since Green spent the majority of his career playing close to that many minutes, and has kept similar ratios in Boston, and Gay plays about that many minutes now, it seems like a good time to use them.
So, basically 3 points per game and 1% better shooting percentage is the only difference between the players...
And we have seen in Boston how exciting Green can be to watch when you get him in the open court.

Memphis gets: Jeff Green
Phoenix gets: Gay, Melo
Boston gets: Dudley, Gortat
Phoenix gets a first round pick from Boston.
We'd be taking on $1.9M in salary. Can we take that on without exceeding the tax limit now that we've cut Joseph and Varnado? If we're close, we could send Collins out.
I would be so all over this deal.

I doubt that, since Hollinger HATES Green. But I don't see why the Suns wouldn't kick the tires on him, if they are looking for a long, athletic, swing man, who can score.

Really unfortunate that Memphis would blow their title chance like this.
Bummer when a small market team is set up and they give it away.
But we will see what happens.

To be fair, I am not sure swapping Gay for Dudley would blow their chances, since Dudley is an upgrade defensively, and it will just let them pound the ball inside even more, which is their strength.
-

God, this is my least favorite argument in all of basketball.
Scoring averages are completely meaningless without taking into account field goal percentage. Why do I always need to remind people of this?
Career averages:
Gay:
17.9 points per game
15.2 field goal attempts per game
45.3% from the field
34.5% from 3-point land
77.3% from the line
52.8% true shooting percentage
1.18 PPS
Dudley:
8.8 points per game
6.7 field goal attempts per game
47.6% from the field
40.5% from 3-point
73.8% from the line
58.3% true shooting percentage
1.32 PPS
For purposes of comparison, for the past season, here are the shooting averages for all small forwards in the league:
44.7% from the field
36.1% from 3-point
78.1% from the line
54.0% true shooting percentage
1.22 PPS
When you look at their numbers, over the course of their entire careers, Dudley has been a superior offensive player in terms of raw efficiency. That he scored less is only a function of playing fewer minutes and getting fewer touches; if he got the same number of touches as Gay, he would in fact have scored more than Rudy.
Now, you can argue that the differences are a function of the system they play in. Gay tends to create off the dribble, which will always be a lower percentage shot than catch-and-shoot. That's perfectly valid. I am not trying to make a prediction about how either player will fare if this trade goes through, I am simply commenting that, when you look at the numbers, Dudley has been a more efficient offensive weapon. Not only that, but Gay's career averages are, in fact, below the league average for small forwards.

Is Dudley an upgrade defensively?
As far as defensive effort maybe, ability I have my doubts. Dudley has always struck me more as a hustle defensive guy rather than an effective one.

I agree.
I quite like Dudley too, don't get me wrong, but Gay is a far more talented player and certainly more athletic. I know he isn't a superstar but you need that kind of player in the playoffs and he helps add some different dimensions to the team. Dudley will not get you a title.
I think Memphis as is now are legit contenders.

I see where you are coming from but Rudy Gay doesn't clog up the paint and he adds another dimension to the team (athleticism, shot making), as well as above where I don't see Dudley as an upgrade defensively really.
-
I'm not completely sold on Dudley. Gotta think the grizz could do better for gay in my opinion. A replacement small forward and a big man for the bench.
-
Ths trade would kill the Grizzlies chance to win a championship..they need Gay
-
Memphis has an elite front court. They would be well served to get three point shooters to make doubling their bigs a poor decision. Dudley is a better three point shooter than Gay. So although Gay is a much better player, the role the Grizz want their small forwards to play better suits J-Duds.
-
That's too bad. I think the best shot for Memphis taking the next step involved Gay remaining there.
-
I've been talking about this option on a number of recent threads, with Gay going to Phoenix, Dudley and a Boston SG going to MEM, and Gortat coming to BOS.
http://forums.celticsblog.com/index.php?topic=61409.30
I would far prefer this is Terry over Lee. Either way, I think it makes more sense than anyone the Suns could trade over with Dudley, except for possibly Gortat who would have to I back to being a bench player there.

Can't see why the Warriors should be after Gay. Klay Thompson's a fine young player who offers a lot of what Gay can at a fraction of the price.

I reckon GSW does nothinge they are balling this year. and in all honesty i think Barnes has the potential to be another rudy gay if not better. The kid just doesnt play like a rookie, can say that alot about this draft class i feel :S

The Phoenix Suns, Golden State Warriors, Sacramento Kings and Boston Celtics are among the teams that have had conversations with the Grizzlies about Gay, according to league sources. The Houston Rockets and Toronto Raptors have shown interest in Gay in the past and could be potential trade partners as well.

He's calling to get involved in a Gay trade, not to trade for Gay.
It's tough making trades in the league -- often easier to get in on one than to talk a team into a 1-on-1 move.

FWIW, Fab Melo and the expiring contracts of Barbosa, Wilcox, and Collins represents about $3.8 million.
Celts are right up against the threshold, so they won't be able to take back much more than they send out. A little cushion, not much.
-
I think people are forgetting that part of what the Grizzlies are trying to accomplish is to reduce payroll. The Grizzlies are $4.6 million over the tax limit and Gay makes $16.4 million this year.
Phoenix is not over the cap so they have some wiggle room in what they can take on in salary. So basically a trade of Dudley and Beasley for Gay works and it saves the grizzlies over $5 million in salary and gets them out from under a tax payment.
I really think that is a huge, major motivation in dealing ONLY with Phoenix and would preclude Boston from get involved, simply put, the $5 million in saved tax payment is a motivating factor that must be maintained in this deal.
-
I'd be extremely surprised if Sarver gets on the hook for Gay's contract. Shocked, actually. No way do I see the Suns doing this, unless they are flipping him or a third team is involved.
Sarver likes youngs (small contracts), expirings and draft picks.
-
In addition to conversations with Phoenix, Memphis has tried to engage Golden State in trade talks for Rudy Gay, league sources say.
The Grizzlies-Warriors talks stalled with Golden State's desire to include Richard Jefferson ($21m left over two years) in the deal.
@KBergCBS
Can't see why the Warriors should be after Gay. Klay Thompson's a fine young player who offers a lot of what Gay can at a fraction of the price.
Curry, Klay, Rudy, Lee and Ezeli. That would be strong lineup. Fun to think about.
Barnes, Ezeli and Jefferson for Gay works.
I reckon GSW does nothinge they are balling this year. and in all honesty i think Barnes has the potential to be another rudy gay if not better. The kid just doesnt play like a rookie, can say that alot about this draft class i feel :S
How about Bogut for Green and Lee?
That can only help them right?

Not forgetting -- the trade I proposed accomplishes precisely that. Meanwhile, I think it actually helps the Cs get involved considering:
1) The Cs have ~5mil parts that are more compelling than PHXs beyond Dudley;
2) The Cs are a better fit for Gortat -- a guy PHX is looking to move on from -- than MEM is;
3) The Cs have a better prospect to throw PHXs way than MEM does for giving up Gortat;
4) There is no chance Hollinger is trading for Beasley.

Yeah the only way Boston were to get involved is if they're giving up prospects or picks to entice Memphis to make the deal. They wouldn't bring any salary wiggle to the table.

Is Wilcox tradeable since he resigned on a one year deal? I think he isn't

For the old cba he'd have had veto rights to it, not sure if he still does.

Sham Sports says he does have veto rights. Otherwise, he is tradeable.

Hmm...Give up our only backup SF and our only other player who (at a squeeze) can play SF in return for a big who has played a total of 16 games in the last two seasons?

Alex Kennedy saying the Cs have talked to Memphis about Gay.

I'm pretty sure Danny's kicked the tires on every player of significance out there. Gay makes no sense for us for a lot of reasons, though.
If it's Gay, Green is probably involved.
I would do it in a heartbeat for Green
Hollinger hates Green and his contract, so it's not going to happen.

Good call. Just Danny kicking the tires. Has to be trying to get in on a three team deal. Gay would be great but I don't see how he fits in.
-
I thought Phoenix's front office was incredibly cheap? Why would they take Gay's contract?
And what's in it for Memphis? I get that they was to avoid the luxury tax, but they won't get good value back if they trade with Phoenix. They need to find another team.
-

They offered the max to Eric Gordon this summer. Rudy Gay is right up their alley.

Rudy Gay will be a fixture on the NBA's top ten scorer list for the next 6-8 years.
Forget the 17.6ppg or whatever people were talking about earlier in this thread. The only reason he isn't scoring 20+ppg already is because he has accepted a smaller role offensively in Memphis to make their Z-Bo / M.Gasol pound it into paint game plan work.
Rudy Gay can create a good quality shot attempt against absolutely every defender / team defense in the NBA. He doesn't create enough high percentage attempts but being able to get a good quality shot attempt at any moment is a very valuable skill come playoff time.
Rudy Gay is a very strong defensive player (much better than J.Dudley) who's mix of size, length and athleticism is extremely difficult for opposing scorers to deal with. He is a solid possession creator with rebounds and forced turnovers.
This guy is a stud. A strong two way player who rebounds. Hugely valuable player.
If Memphis dump Gay, it will be a catastrophic mistake for their long term future. Gay, along with M.Gasol, is one of the two guys Memphis should be planning their long term future around.
-
Jared Dudley would be great for Memphis to play behind Rudy Gay. To replace S.Battier.
Memphis should offer up a package of draft picks for him. Give them Speights or D.Arthur and Pondexter. Cut a few million of their payroll in the process. Then try to deal Bayless for a cheaper PG to make up the rest to get them below the luxury tax threshold.

My thoughts about Gay and three trades that would make sense for him. Spoiler Alert the first involves Boston getting Gortat. Let me know what you think http://pickandpopdiaries.blogspot.com/2013/01/rudy-gay-trade-derby.html
-
Toronto is said to be offering Calderon's expiring, Ed Davis, and future picks for Gay.

Lowry, DeRozan, and Gay is a nice troika to build around. Jonas V, too.

Doesn't make sense for Memphis. You don't trade Gay for an upgrade at backup PG. They don't need another PF, either.
-
Yeah that Toronto offer isn't going to work for Gay.

Agreed. Calderon is nice, but a pricey backup. However, he could be flipped.
And you're right: Griz don't really need another young big, with Darrell Arthur waiting in the wings.

Maybe a third team would be involved to take Calderon and Davis. Not sure who would have interest in those two though.

Interesting, definitely makes some sense for all teams involved. But leaves Memphis pretty thin at small forward. I'd wonder if they'd prefer to take in Jeff Green rather than Dudley. They'd lose some savings, and have to make smaller moves to get under the tax line (shed about 2mil more), but from a team balance stand point, it seems to make more sense.
Of course, they would then leave the Celtics very thin at SF, and likely needing to add a player to back up Pierce.
-
That Toronto offer is just the worst.
Though with the fact that they are even trying to trade Gay, we have to consider almost anything could be accepted even if it doesn't make basketball sense, because this is a team that apparently cares more about the money than the shot at a title.

Yeah terrible offer from Toronto, Calderons expiring has Memphis's eyes wide open. I just dont get it. They are a legit West team, why break it up by trading off their best player for money reasons.
-
Anyway we can get involved in a grizz/suns trade.
Suns trade Gortat, Dudley, Johnson?
Recieve: Gay, Bass, Melo
Grizz Trade Gay
Recieve Green, Johnson (Young wing with an expiring), Collins (Expiring)
Celts Trade: Green, Melo, Bass, Collins
Get: Gortat Dudley
This is me being greedy. Anf for that the Suns are a tough trading partner. Would the Grizz want Green to replace Gay. Four year deal but his per year cost are pretty much cut in half. With a few draft picks would that be a reasonable deal? Our lineup results in (a line up I like a lot).
Rondo/Terry
Bradley/Lee
Pierce/Dudley
KG/Sully
Gortat/Wilcox

I can imagine a scenario where the Celtics send out either Lee or Terry plus the 2013 first-round pick that they don't want and bring back a big not named Gortat (Darrell Arthur?).

They'd ask for Lee instead of Terry probably but otherwise that is a fine trade. We trade Melo and Lee for Gortat. Sold!
