Game Notes
The Celtics return home after a successful 2 game road trip to host the Miami Heat.  This is the third and final game between these two teams this season.  The Celtics won 96-90 when they met on October 28 in Miami and they lost 104-98 when they again played in Miami on November 22.  This is the earliest that these two teams have ever wrapped up their series.

The Celtics are looking for their third straight win.  They are 7-3 in their last 10 games and are 13-3 at home.  The Heat are 5-5 in their last 10 games and 9-8 on the road.  They are looking to get back on track after losing their last game to the Atlanta Hawks 110-104.

The Heat have been hampered with injuries in recent games.  Hassan Whiteside is out once again with a sore knee.  He missed the Heat's loss in the first game but did play in their win in the second game.  James Johnson (ankle), Rodney McGruder (tibia), Okaro White (foot) are also out for this game.

Justise Winslow is listed as doubtful with an ankle injury.  Goran Dragic is listed as questionable with a sore elbow, but he has stated that he is going to try to play.  For the Celtics, Daniel Theis had his nose rebroken on Tuesday and is expected to miss this game.  Marcus Morris (knee) and Gordon Hayward (ankle) remain out.

The Celtics are just 2.5 games up on the Cavaliers who continue to play very well in spite of their loss to the Bucks on Tuesday.  The Raptors are just 3.5 games back of the Celtics.  The Heat have slipped to 1 game out of playoff contention. With their series tied at 1 game each, this game will give bragging rights to the winner between these two rivals.

Key Matchups
(http://ak-static.cms.nba.com/wp-content/uploads/headshots/nba/latest/260x190/202681.png) vs (http://i.cdn.turner.com/nba/nba/.element/img/2.0/sect/statscube/players/large/goran_dragic.png)
Kyrie Irving vs Goran Dragic
Dragic is averaging 16.6 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 4.4 assists. He scored 27 points in each of their last two meetings.   Kyrie will need to make him work for his points and also make him work on defense.  Dragic is listed as questionable with a sore elbow but he has said that he plans to try to play.

(http://ak-static.cms.nba.com/wp-content/uploads/headshots/nba/latest/260x190/1627759.png) vs (http://ak-static.cms.nba.com/wp-content/uploads/headshots/nba/latest/260x190/203079.png)
Jaylen Brown vs Dion Waiters
Waiters is averaging 14.8 points, 2.6 rebounds and 3.8 assists and he is capable of having a big game if not kept in check.  Jaylen will need to defend him well and try not to get into foul trouble in this game as the Celtics need him out there.

Honorable Mention
Al Horford vs Kelly Olynyk
Olynyk is averaging 9.2 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game.  Al has had experience guarding Kelly in practice,  and vice versa.   Hopefully Al can can keep Kelly from having a big game from the perimeter and on the other end, make Kelly work on defense.

Keys to the Game
Defense

Defense wins games. The Celtics still have the best defense in the league but they have let it slip in recent games, whether because of their brutal schedule or they just aren't working as hard.   The Celtics are still tops in the league allowing 98.5 points per game while the Heat are allowing 102.2 points per game.    The Celtics need to continue to make defense a priority and concentrate on keeping the Heat's offense off balance.

Rebound
The Heat are averaging 41.0 rebounds per game while the Celtics are averaging 44.1 rebounds per game.  Crashing the boards will give the Celtics extra possessions as well as keeping the Heat from getting fast breaks and second chance points. As with the defense, the Celtics have been slipping on the boards recently.  Rebounding takes effort and the Celtics have to outwork the Heat on the boards.

Be Aggressive
The Celtics have to be aggressive in going to the basket and not settle for jumpers, especially if the jumpers aren't falling.  They have to dive for loose balls and be aggressive in crashing the boards.  They can't afford to slack off or to allow the Heat to play harder than them. They have to be the team that wants it more.

Play 48 Minutes
- The Celtics have been in the habit of playing well just half of the game.  They either  fall behind by double digits and then have to play extra hard to get back into the game or they get a big lead and then pretty much stop playing to allow their opponents back into the game (see Pacers, Indiana).  They need to play hard on both ends of the court from the opening tip to the final buzzer.

X-Factors
Home Game
- The Celtics are back at home after two road games.    The Celtics  have been playing well at home with a record of 13-3.  They need to continue to draw energy from the home crowd and make it difficult for other teams to win at the Garden.

Revenge Factor
-  There are revenge factors on both sides of this game.  The series is tied at 1 game each so the winner of this game wins the series.  Kelly Olynyk and Jordan Mickey will want to beat their former team and both teams will be motivated to avenge the earlier loss.  Also, the Heat win ended the Celtics 16 game win streak and they certainly will want to get back at the Heat for that.

Fatigue Factor - The Celtics are in the midst of a very tough stretch of games.  This is their 8th game in 13 days with 5 of those games on the road.  They have had 2 sets of back to back games and two sets of 3 games in 4 nights.   This is yet again the first of back to back games.  The players have not had any chance to practice and they may be getting fatigued.  On the other hand,  both teams are missing key players with the Heat more short handed than the Celtics.  That puts extra work on the remaining players.  Fatigue may be a factor for both teams.

Go Celts. We need to capitalize with Whiteside out. Don't play down to the competition and Jaylen start practicing your free throws this morning.

Just saw Waiters on Pre-Game Live.

Bad memory of that 3 ball he hoisted from the corner when they stopped our streak that bounced up, hit the top of the backboard, rattled around and then in.

Lucky...lucky....lucky....then that lucky shot gave him the confidence to bury that dagger three the next time down.

Screw him.....lets beat the crap out of this team.....payback time.

Sad part is that this is a no-win game for us as far a real payback, though. They are so croaked by injuries that if we win, we were supposed to. If we don't, that'll be real embarrassing.

Let's kick their ass anyway!!!

Hopefully any adjustments that he has to make to compensate don't mess with that beautiful stroke.

Hard working people paying a lot of money for those tickets. The league has to keep it close...it would only be fair.  :o

Brown is 5-7 for 12 points in the first quarter and yet they don't find a way to get him a shot in the 2nd. Weird.

You know I'm wondering if there's stats on that - when teams build large leads early in the game, how the foul counts play out across the league.  I'd imagine there's a discrepancy where the team that is down big gets more calls.

This. It's wierd and seems to happen a lot.He goes on longest stretches without touching the ball after being hot. Also think has to do with getting taken out with just under 2 minutes in the 1st and not getting back in until a little over 4 min left in the second. Add in the break in the quarter that's just too long to sit especially after being on fire.

Oh no doubt.  There's unspoken rules about trying to keep games close and giving star players more calls.  Like if you breathe on Giannis or James Harden it's a foul.

This game shouldn't even be close. It's amazing how ****ty you look when you don't put effort in.

I'm tired of this team playing to the level of its competition. They can beat the Warriors and hang with the Spurs, but they lose to the Bulls and the Jazz, and are now getting beat by half a mediocre Heat team.

The way to beat a zone is to attack it going to the hoop at the top of the key leaving the baseline open for back door cuts when 1 of the defenders comes over to help on the initial drive.

It's so simple but there's no plan of attack.  Instead, the C's keep shooting over the top.  Live by the 3 and die by the 3 when the shots are falling.

Perhaps it's because we're much better overall defensively this year, so Smart's D seems less special, but it seems like he's taken a step back defensively.

KO with a career game.  Figures.

It's a good illustration of why he's not on the team anymore.

You shouldn't need this sort of motivation to give some semblance of effort every night.

Glad he's gone.

Yeah, the dude makes some frustrating plays at times, but you NEVER question his heart, hustle, or will to win.

That's worth $12 million itself.

I'm not really that worried, you don't get worried about a young team that's grossly over-performing both their talent and point differential. But there are some issues that need to be sorted out.

Great game by Kelly, props to him.

Smart and Brown were great in that 4th quarter.  They laid down the entire foundation -- hustle plays, rebounds, blocks/steals, finishes -- for a wide-open look at the end.  Unfortunately, Kyrie failed to complete the only task he is ever given.

He's expected to take the blame in the post-game interviews -- "superstar."  Better be focused on the game and not how cute he looks in his mittens and matching hat.

I mean, beyond the Hayward loss, we've also not had Morris for most of the year, which is much more of an issue than people realize. Having his offense and shooting would greatly help on these types of nights.

Fantastic game by Smart - he really deserves a lot of credit on offense and defense. If he keeps this up, he will get paid a LOT this offseason.

I haven't looked at the box score, but total crap game by Horford and Rozier - like flush the toilet and close the seat. They were just plain horrible.

It's embarrassing to lose to what would easily be the worst team in the league (with their injuries). If we were missing Kyrie, Horford, Tatum, and Brown I would fully expect to lose, not beat the 'best team in the East'.

They need to get this game over with tomorrow and then think about how they want to play out the season. They have a lot of talent, but we aren't going anywhere without a Hayward return.

Where the heck was this KO version all this time...god that was too painful to swallow.
KO 32 points..Average Al 6 points...go figure.

This team needs Hayward in the most truest sense..

Right about now ill call tge Pels and offer MS, Brown, Horford and all of our assets for Davis...we need a major shake up....Oh I just remembered we are still tops in the East....never mind.

Fantastic game by Smart - he really deserves a lot of credit on offense and defense. If he keeps this up, he will get paid a LOT this offseason.

ROFL for every game Stupid has like this he has 5 awful ones. Any team that pays him a LOT next year will regret every dollar of it!

Smart fans are like Fox news watchers, they totally dismiss facts!

Are the Celtics the the only team that seems to get burned ridiculously on former players' first games back with regularity?  It's pretty crazy.

The good news is that players like it so much here that they are angry when they leave.

tough loss -- should have beat this team but they let off the gas again.

thought for sure Kyrie was going to make the winning bucket until I saw it leave his hand.

Bro, this is non-sense. How many clutch points did Kyrie score tonight, like 10? It's not even close without him. If you want to complain about someone, complain about Al who was non-existent all night long.

That's an easy argument to make in his favor. But again, consider that he was shooting sub 33% near the end, but Smart and Brown gave him continued opportunities on the offensive end.  They did their job time and time again, just as Kyrie was till that last, wide-open look.  Apparently 12 were required for the win, and he failed to produce.

And which NBA coaches would you prefer?

3 of them?

There is no perfect coach, and we happen to have one of the very best.

Enjoy the ride, and stop acting like everything that isn't perfect is failure.

Kyrie is the best option at that time. He didn't make the shot. No one makes them all, and Kyrie is still hitting more of them at a higher percentage thay almost anyone else.

Well, the "Former Celtics Revenge Tour" series of movies started tonight.

Staring - None other than Kelly Olynyk, with Guest Star Jordan Mickey.

Both of these "B" listers figured prominently tonight in this upset thriller in Boston.

Next up? None other than Oscar Nominee Isaiah Thomas, staring in "Hell Hath no fury like a Former Boston Star Scorned".

This one has been HIGHLY anticipated by Basketball fans FOREVER. It is being rumored as the NBA's version of "Gone with The Wind."

Get your tickets FAST - this thriller is selling out all around the country.

Isaiah is in the running for an Oscar, and he has Supporting Actors Kevin Love (no stranger to the limelight himself), and none other than Lebron "The King" James as the main protagonists.

I'm predicting an OSCAR performance from Isaiah - Uncle Drew be danged.

Hopefully he makes many more in the future.  Harden went for 51 and 9 tonight but the Rockets still lost to LAL.

Blaming this loss on the guy that scored 33 point when Larkin, Theis, Ojeleye, Rozier, Horford and Baynes scored 8 points in 95 minutes is ludicrous. It just goes to show someone's dislike of Irving. This loss isn't even close to being Kyrie's fault. That is just ridiculous.

Those players shot 2 for 22 yet the loss is Kyrie's fault? Rolling my eyes at that. ::) ::) ::)

Your petty ncaa allegiance is ruining the reading experience around here.

College ball is a blight on the basketball community so perhaps you can do us all a favor and check that nonsense at the door?

For the past few years, I've watched an average of 5 games/year, including March.  I can't name 5 players on either UNC or Duke this season.  It's a screen name that has no bearing on my opinions at all.

So... but the weather has been good, huh?

More games than any other teams so less practice. ... again I just hope that is the reason .

A bit risky to place your assessment for the team upon an eight game stretch.

10 and 6 since the streak. That changes one’s perspective perhaps.

But this loss sucked. Olly went bananas, refs were bad and jobbed al, some Celtics played without passion or energy, and Kyrie misses a game winner. Not a common collection of events.

Well, that and injuries. People underestimate how much we miss (or need - since he hasn’t really been fully healthy all year) Morris. His vet presence and scoring/shooting would certainly be a major complement to our young team, especially the bench.

The Celtics are 13-4 at home this year. In games that I've gone to, they're 1-3, so I haven't exactly seen the best of their playing. But last night was the first night in years that I've walked out of the Garden truly p---ed off.

I don't know what to say after that one. It looked like nobody showed up to play, with an exception for the guy who scored 33 and a bit of Marcus. How can you have a nine-point lead after one against a team that is missing its top 2 or 3 players, only to end up down double-digits in the fourth and finally losing? If they had only been mediocre, they would have won by 20. They looked bored out on the court during the game. I don't know where Horford was for most of the game. Ditto Aron Baynes. The refs were weak, but not much weaker than usual (a few petty fouls on Horford). But the refs didn't make us shoot 30-some odd percent.

Adding insult to injury: One of the benefits of being a STM is that I get to go out and play basketball on the court after the game. Whenever the Celtics win, they send a player out to take photos with us. After seeing the line-ups at the beginning of the game, I figured that there was no way that they would lose this one. Sigh. No player for us.

Seriously, deserve a refund after that piece of (insert word that wouldn't make it through the censors).

Mike

This is a just a bit biased.  Kyrie scored 33 points in the game, without him we are steamrolled.
I come to these game threads at the end of games just to see the mental gymnastics Tar Heels will pull in order to blame Irving

Not disappointed tonight

I am glad you were entertained haha...what a p----poor loss tonight.
to expand on this, Irving had 9 points and an assist on 4/5 shooting in the final 2.5 minutes. Over that 150 second stretch we cut the lead from 11 to 1.
