Jason Collins played for the Grizzlies during the 2007-08 season
Jared Sullinger and Mike Conley both attended Ohio State
Chris Wilcox and Zach Randolph both played for New York during the 2008-09 season
Leandro Barbosa and Jerryd Bayless were teammates in Toronto from 2010-12.

Game Notes
The Celtics welcome old friend Tony Allen and his Grizzlies to the Garden as they try to get back on track after a 1-3 road trip.   The Celtics have lost 3 in a row to Western Conference teams and return home hoping to turn that trend around.  The Celtics have played well at home with a 9-5 record while the Grizzlies are just 6-6 on the road.

The big news for the Celtics is that Avery Bradley is expected to make
his season debut in this game.  Doc has said that if he is ready, he would start him and I'm optimistically putting him in the starting lineup.  That allows Jason Terry to come off the bench where he is more comfortable.

The Celtics are still trying to find their identity and after 3 terrible losses on the West coast they face a Grizzlies team that is also searching for answers.   Both  teams have lost 3 of their last 4 games.    The Memphis Grizzlies have  turned in three straight efforts of fewer than 90 points for the first time this season.   Both teams have been very inconsistent and so it's anyone's guess how this one will turn out.

Rajon Rondo sat out practice on Tuesday and is questionable for this game and will more than likely be a game time decision.   The Celtics should get a boost from Bradley's return and hopefully his on the ball defense will help the Celtics sagging team defense.   The Celtics are 2 games under .500 and are just half a game ahead of the Sixers for the 8th seed in the East.  They need to find answers and turn their season around soon.   Hopefully it will be in this game.

Key Matchups
(http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/3007.jpg) (http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/3530.jpg) vs  (http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/3531.jpg)(http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/4325.jpg)
Kevin Garnett vs Zach Randolph
Jason Collins vs Marc Gasol
The matchup between the Celtics bigs and the Grizzlies bigs will be key in determining the winner.   The Grizzlies are strong where the Celtics are weakest and that is in the middle.  I expect KG to cover Gasol and Collins to cover Randolph because he is so physical that he'd be a tough cover for KG.

(http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/4149.jpg)  vs  (http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/4246.jpg)
Rajon Rondo vs Mike Conley
Rondo is listed as questionable with the hip/thigh bruise that he suffered in the Clippers game.  Hopefully he will be able to go.  Conley is a good PG and is averaging 2.44 steals a game and could give the Celtics problems, especially if Rondo can't go.  `

Honorable Mention

Paul Pierce vs Rudy Gay
Gay is a very good young player and Pierce will need to play him aggressively on the defensive end as well as make him work by being aggressive on the offensive end.

Keys to the Game
Defense - The team that works hardest on defense will be the team that wins.  The Grizzlies are a good defensive team and will limit the Celtics' easy looks.  The Celtics will need to match their defensive intensity if they want to win this game.  In the Celtics wins they are holding teams to 89 points per game.  In their losses, they are allowing 101 points per game.  When they bring their defensive intensity they win and when they don't they lose.  It's that simple.

Rebound - Rebounding is very important in limiting fast break points and second chance points for Memphis.  The Grizzlies are very good at getting second chance points off of offensive rebounds and putbacks with Randoph and Gasol playing inside.    The Celtics must be aggressive in crashing the boards.  The team that wins the battle of the boards usually wins the game.

Take Care of the Ball - The Grizzlies are among the best in the league in forced turnovers and steals and they are also very good at scoring off those turnovers.  The Celtics must take care of the ball and avoid careless passes and lapses in focus or the Grizzlies will make them pay.  Rondo must especially concentrate on his passes and ball handling as Conley averages 2.4 steals a game.

Be Aggressive for 48 Minutes - When the Celtics are passive and settle for jumpers and don't swarm on defense they end up in trouble.
The Celtics need to come out strong and play aggressively until the final buzzer.  They can't allow the Grizzlies to build a lead because their defense will make it difficult to come back.

X-Factors
Rondo and Avery
Avery Bradley's return should give the team a boost, but if Rondo can't go, it could cancel out any benefits they get from Bradley's presence.  Hopefully both are ready to go and will play well.

It feels like Memphis has been struggling lately. I keep seeing them struggling on the scoreboard updates over the last few weeks. Dropping off after their hot start perhaps.

Still, I think their bigs of M.Gasol and Z.Randolph will be too much for the Celtics here. Not optimistic about Boston's chances of picking up a result.

Pretty worried about Rondo and Pierce trying to defend Conley and Gay too. Pierce has really been struggling lately on the defensive end. Rondo was terrible (on defense) against Sacramento. If he is in that bad shape, I'd rather see Rondo sit out a few games and live with the results.

The prospect of getting Avery back, but possibly losing Rondo is depressing.  That kind of deflates the whole thing for me a little bit.  The point was to have our ultra--speedy, pesky back court back.  Who knows how long this Rondo thing will linger.

Bummer.

How bad will we get out-rebounded??  I LOVE Randolph's game - he's a throwback player that I truly enjoy.  Reminds me of Wayman Tisdale, but he boards better.

Bradley will be rusty and will need time to get back up to speed. Couple that will the Memphis bigs I don't expect the night to end well for the Celtics.

Call me crazy, but I'm predicting a win tonight.

I genuinely believe that one of our three biggest issues is defense in the backcourt.  While Bradley may struggle offensively until he finds his groove, I think defenisvely he will be ready from the get-go.

Also like us, Memphis don't have a very big backcourt with both Conley and Allen being 6'4" or under.  Even if Rondo is out, I think Terry + Bradley match up well with Conley + Allen.

I also think Sullinger is going to match up well with Randolf. Similar sized guys, both are bulky and strong but neither is especially tall or athletic.

Likewise if Green can play strong defense on Gay like he did against Durant then I think we match up extremely well with this team.

If I were Doc I would start:

Rondo/Terry
Bradley
Pierce
Sullinger
Garnett

I think that's our best lineup for matchup up with the Grizzlies starters, and I think Barbosa/Lee/Green/Bass are find against Memphis' bench.

According to NBA TV, Rondo is starting.

Rajon Rondo (hip) will play Wednesday against the Grizzlies.
Rondo warmed up before the game with his hip heavily wrapped but moved pretty well, according to the beat writers. Rondo will start alongside the returning Avery Bradley and fantasy owners will want to get Rondo back into their starting lineups.

Avery Bradley (shoulder) will return and will start Wednesday night against the Grizzlies.
While we don't expect Bradley to play major minutes right off the bat, Doc Rivers has suggested he's hoping Bradley jump-starts the slumping Celtics. Monitor how many minutes he gets right off the bat, but Bradley could be a solid speculative add given his starting role.

Hopefully, Rondo is in better shape than he was in Sacramento.

At least they'll be able to hide him defensively on Tony Allen. Let Bradley handle Conley.

Grizzlies' frontcourt is gonna KILL us... not only Randolph and Gasol are gonna have a field day against anyone not named KG, but also Pierce is gonna help Rudy Gay get out of his slump by getting torched once again. Bradley's return is gonna pump up the crowd, but only temporarily, no more than a couple of minutes or until him and KG sit and we go back to our beloved "no D at all" system...
I'm also pumped up to see AB after such a long time, but I don't have high hopes for this game... the Grizz, even slumping, are a much better team and a matchup nightmare for the C's! I just hope I won't see another blowout...

On the Pierce 3 defense collapsed on a Bradley cut leaving them scrambling and kg followed by Pierce being open.

Paul Pierce has a different attitude on the floor right now, really confident play out of him, hope it continues.

Also, can Avery play the whole game? Amazing how the perimeter defense is effected right when he goes off the floor.

My guess is that Doc is scared of leaving Bass or Sully in to defend Marc Gasol.

Waiting for Memphis to sit M.Gasol first.

How much space does Bass need to feel comfortable shooting?  Is it a slow shooting motion that causes him to be so tentative when someone is within 4 feet?  Frustrating to watch him pass up open looks when he seems to have plenty of space.

Nice to see Bass get to the foul line. Excellent pass by Sully to find him.

Still, when Bass got the ball I think he was tentative. He didn't go up strong and force contact. A small fake got the foul but he could have been more aggressive.  I like Bass, but I just feel like he has to learn to be more physical offensively.  Draw contact.  Get the shot up quicker when 10-12 feet out.  Defenses can give him space because they know he won't shoot unless wide open.

The presence of Bradley transforms this entite team, his energy really is contagious.

For the first time this season I'm actually thrilled with the play of Jeff Green and Courtney Lee - Lee is playing aggressively and Jeff Green has been active away from the ball on both ends of the court rather than sitting and waiting in the corner.

Bass aside from one good defensive play is still terrible.  He's turned from 'no pass Bass' to 'no shoot Bass' - it's like the thought of him taking a shot horrifies him.  Plus his hands are still coated with soap, because he's incapable of catching the ball.

Pierce is ON FIRE!

The team is so unpleasant to watch.

The Grizzlies do everything so effortlessly, including passing, hitting threes, boxing out, rebounding...

Everything for the Celtics is a grind.  Which I'm fine with.  But, when you grind everything out you HAVE TO GIVE EFFORT.

Doc can't get five guys to give effort at the same time.

And, I am so sick of watching jumper after jumper after jumper after jumper.

Someone drive to the basket.

Yeah, I've had an issue with him for a bit. It seems as though at 35 he's trying to do way too much instead of letting the game come to him. A lot of dribbling, a lot of iso's, and a lot of forced shots.

Also wish Doc had let Lee play more. Would've like to have seen how a Lee/Bradley backcourt looks defensively.

Pierce has turned into a bit of a ballhog.

Does he have much of a choice? I hate seeing him force shots, but hell who else is doing anything?

New rotation:

Rondo
Bradley
Pierce
Sully
KG

Terry
Green
Bass

You go no deeper than this. Celtics can't afford to put helpless people on the court.

Just giving too many points away off of turnovers.  I think our 1/2 court d was good.  Our transition d was terrible.  If we can stop giving the ball away we can take this game.

The Celtics have to be the worst team in the league at finishing out quarters.

They had a chance to get this below 5, and in under 50 seconds it ballooned to 9.  That's a huge difference.

They make nothing easy for themselves or their fans.

I can't even watch them anymore.

we coulda signed tony allen :'(

At the time, Ainge made the right decision albeit difficult one letting Tony go. You can ill aforrd to have two alltime bad non-scorers in your backcourt. Remember how terrible spacing was in Lakers/Celtics series. In hindsight, Celtics offense hasn't gotten better, and defense has nose dived.

We looked great in the first half with Bradley and Collins out there - the defense was really solid.  Seems Bradley would force his assignment towards the baseline where they would run in to the giant tree that is Collins.

Collins was very active with both his hands and his movement in that first half too.

He may not get any offensive production, but I wouldn't mind seing him out there with Bradley again.

Happy to see Bradley playing, but the guy needs a couple of weeks to shake off the rust. He looks ok physically, though, and that's great after double shoulder surgery.

Our D looks a bit better, but our offense is awful. Rondo is hurt and still doesn't care a lot about these games. Please Doc, rest our star PG.

As good as TA looks, the guy got a lot of heat around here... still a fan of him, but he wanted to go elsewhere, so, more power to him. Bradley will look a lot better in a couple of weeks.

Go Celtics, move the ball and play D.

Pierce is trying to stay hot. KG being cold and all. Who should shoot? Collins?
Rondo needs to create more in these situations. Either as a scorer or a passer.

Dribble penetration. Get into the paint.

Agreed. id love to see him in the paint then kick out. Do you think he is trying to dial down the assists at all? Maybe score more yet the hip is holding him back? I like seeing Avery back.
I'm not sure whether Rondo is playing tentative or whether it's his injury.

He started the game great and the team responded to that. From that point on though, he was much less of a threat going to the basket.

15, 10 and 5 in his first game back. Then the triple double against us. 21 and 14 the next night against Detroit. And he already has 18 and 14 midway through the third tonight against Cleveland.

Ironically, he's still the same player he was when he left(~25 mpg, 45-48% from the field, 8-10 ppg, solid defense). And outside of today's came, he's mired in the middle of his career-worst shooting season (.400 from the field).

-Turn it over
-Don't run the floor in transition
-Don't contest rebounds

They seem too comfortable with Doc

Tony Allen is KILLING US.
I repeat, Tony Allen is KILLING US.
Not too surprising. Good cutter/slasher that plays perhaps the best defense in the league at his position. On top of that, he's hitting threes. I mean, come on.

We're playing like carps though.
He's not hitting threes. Not this game, not this season, not ever in his career, really.

Ironically, he's still the same player he was when he left(~25 mpg, 45-48% from the field, 8-10 ppg, solid defense). And outside of today's came, he's mired in the middle of his career-worst shooting season (.400 from the field).
Blame the shooting on good coaching on our side: we didn't let him shoot.

When you give people the confidence and the space to make shots THEY MAKE SHOTS!!!  They're paid to make shots.

The Celtics may be getting a hand up on opponents' shots, but they've already allowed the other team to be completely at ease in their environment.  The other team is confident they're going to make their shots because the Celtics are slow and lazy.

I'm disgusted by this team and I'm tired of fans (and Doc!) making lame excuses.  This team is losing because they're lazy and complacent.  This is a team of talented individuals playing poorly as a team.  They're an awful team.  Something needs to change.

I'm glad for Tony Allen. He got quite a bit of abuse on these very pages when he was here.  From Sal-mon to constant references to his low IQ and impulsivity on the court.  I'd like to have him on the c's but he would not be turning this team around.

We are outclassed nightly nowadays.
Yeah, it's nice to see Tony Allen doing well in Memphis. He deserves it.

Gotta love the effort, energy and enthusiasm he plays with.

TP to both. Danny Ainge lowball offer was the best thing to happen to Tony Allen. He has since established himself in the league; otherwise he would've been buried in Doc's bench like usually was. Since then Tony earned a starting job, made a name for himself as defensive stopper, and even made all nba 1st defensive team.

all options are on the table now. anybody can be traded probably other than KG. he can still ball but i'm telling him i want more low post presence or you just may be shipped out also. enough is enough. rondo and PP are definitely on the table now also. As well as the possibility glenn is fired by Danny.   The coach is ultimately responsible in the end. it is his baby. if they refuse to listen to him it is useless having any of them. simple as that. coach or players.

It helps.

I like Bradley's defense, and love Sully's game.

Also, the Garden crowd is loud today, really love it. Could be they microphones are just close to them today, or the volume is cranked - whatever it is, I love it.

I'd move Bradley for Cousins.

However, it's not fair to expect a huge immediate impct when a guy has been out this long.  Look at how slow some of the other injured players around the league have started (Dirk, Kevin Love, Ricky Rubio, Amare, etc.)

I'd definitely look at trading Rondo right now if it could net us a good big and a decent team running PG. iI dont know what team presents us that opportunity, but I'd be calling around.

Rondo can't be the centerpiece of a team, he just can't. The PG can't be. Name me the last time a team won a title because of their dominant PG play?  Yeah, Rondo was great in 08, but that was because he was the role player PG in that offense and played MUCH better defense.

This teams a joke all these recent signings have been HOT GARBAGE. Rondo isn't consistent and awful defensively. KG and Pierce have many too many off nights. This team will struggle to make the eighth seed.

as i said earlier... ALL OPTIONS are now on the TABLE. I cannot fauly danny for bringing back KG or anybody on the team where we were within a quarter of the finals. after our off season signings we looked much better on PAPER. however we suck on the court. I am behind Danny either way he wants to go now.

I like to see Sullinger move into the starting lineup next game instead of Collins.

See how that lineup works with Sully and Bradley in there alongside the Big Three.

Yeah, I think this would make a lot of sense.

Same plaguing issues with or without Bradley, this team is going nowhere without acquiring another big man. And no, not just any 7'0 scrub body.

we tried telling people AB would not make the difference. we need a big man who can play D and score and rebound.

Exactly...I'd traded what ever it took to bring in Cousins

another scrub center an't gonna help :'(

all options are on the table now. anybody can be traded probably other than KG. he can still ball but i'm telling him i want more low post presence or you just may be shipped out also. enough is enough. rondo and PP are definitely on the table now also. As well as the possibility glenn is fired by Danny.   The coach is ultimately responsible in the end. it is his baby. if they refuse to listen to him it is useless having any of them. simple as that. coach or players.

Wow, I know you are upset that they are playing poorly, but no Doc is not going to be fired.  I seriously doubt that RR and PP are on the trading block.  Wow just a lot of over-reaction.

He's injured. He *is* close to playing on that level, if you disregard the most recent string of games.

Rondo can't be the centerpiece of a team, he just can't. The PG can't be. Name me the last time a team won a title because of their dominant PG play?  Yeah, Rondo was great in 08, but that was because he was the role player PG in that offense and played MUCH better defense.

Statistically our three biggest "positive" players are KG (on defense), Pierce (on offense) and Terry (on both).

Rondo is a pure PG and a playmaker, he is capable of making the guys around him better but he still needs talent around him to be at his best.

He's not the type of player that can dominate games and put the team on his back every night.  He can do it occasioanlly, but not all the time.  He's just not offensively talented enough.

This is why I'm not as hessitant to trade Rondo as I once was.  I love Rondo because he plays with hurt and he plays with a chip on his shoulder, but the second Pierce and KG are gone this team goes straight to lottery if Rondo is the guy we depend on to win us games.

Bradley can possibly replace KG as the teams defensive leader (he's that good) but we need an offensive leader to take over for Pierce and that to me is where Cousins comes in.

I feel DMC has the potential to be an elite offensive player in a couple of years once he develops his skill set, and I dont think any of the other guys we are talking about (Jefferson, Gortat, Milsap, Okafor, Nene) have the potential to be a go-to guy on offense.

On another note - who wanted to trade Terry again?

absolutely correct which is what made him so dominant in that position.  doesn't negate the fact he was the dominant PG of his time (and considered the starting PG on most all-time all-NBA teams)

Exactly. Rondo would be great as the PG if this team had the pieces it needed. I think Romdo is the only player with value that could net the team the pieces it needs. A team does not need a all time great PG to compete, it needs a good thinking PG who can run the floor, run the offense and stay on his man on the perimter on defense.

It also needs a dominant big man and a great wing scorer. Pierce can still be your wing scorer, but you need the big man. Rondo can probably get you that in a trade. You just need to find a decent PG with that.

Dug themselves too large a hole and waited too long to try and climb out of it. Good job by Memphis to scrap their way to a win in the fourth quarter.

Not even a star talent. Just a JJ Barea type.

Another guy who can collapse the defense outside of Rondo.

If we play like this, we'll be over .500 soon.

Good effort in 4th quarter, need to work on defensive end to stay in games for 4 quarters. We'll improve.

Rondo needs to heal and then start caring for games, play straight D and attack on the offensive side.

Avery will only get better, as Sullinger. Doc needs to give Lee and Green more chances to score, we need them.

Good night. Go Celtics!

I agree.  I know, Rondo is one of the top pg, blah blah blah.  We just need a game manager and other pieces.  alot of sentiment for these players but this team needs rebuilt.

Note that he gets a lot of his offensive rebounds Glen-Davis-style (i.e. due to his own inability to finish consistently around the basket).

Who is saying he is free from criticism?  I think he has been taking a lot of heat on this blog and elsewhere.  I just don't think everything is Doc's fault, like a number of people on this blog.  It is really faulty logic.

When KG and PP shoot 11 for 28 from the field, and 3 for 7 from the line that is a big part of why you lose a 10 point game.  Doc didn't tell Rondo to take 2 really bad 3's that sucked the life out of us. Bottom line is that KG and PP are getting older, they are in decline and nothing Doc does or doesn't do is going to change that.

I thought Doc's rotations tonight were pretty good.  He stuck with Sully when he was working his tail off.  I liked C. Lee's minutes and Jet gave us a spark at the end.  We just need to defend better in the middle of the game and not dig ourselves a huge hole.

People are mad, and they can't accept that our talent level isn't as good as we thought it was, so they blame the coach for everything.  Sure doc needs to get more out of the team, but everything isn't his fault.

I agree 100% with you.  I was just responding to the jumpshooting statement.  Once our D started playing better in the 4th 1/4 we had a great run.  We are just digging ourselves too big of holes by not playing D for 48 min.

Front page article title idea:

Bradley Returns.  Celtics Still Suck.
I got a better one :
Bradley Returns.  Doc Still Sucks.
Oh now we're blaming doc for this team's lack of talent?  Lol

if you think docs offensive jumper strategy is smart when we have 4 dribble drivers along with KG and sully to be used down low well.....nevermind
players should also be blamed for playing small ball lineups and for forsaking offensive rebounds or rebounding in general.  ::)

Did Rondo just shoot a contested three about 5 seconds into the shot clock?

Did I just see that or am I losing the plot?
startin to worry bout if he can be a go to guy in da future. wit dis team strugglin nd him being a "leader" he hasnt been aggressive enought for my likin

Terrible is the only word that comes to mind. The difference between the team up until this year was we knew they had the talent to turn it on, I'm not so sure they have what it takes to do that again.

No, the differene is effort.

People are saying that our guys are playing hard - that's garbage.

Look at guys like Hollins, Dooling, Marquis, E'Twaun, Stiemsma and Pietrus.  Last season those guys were the definition of guys who make up for lack of talent by simply playing harder than the opposition. Every one of those guys bar maybe E'Twaun played with 110% effort every time on the court.

Now look at this year's team.

Right now we have Bradley, Sullinger, Garnett and Collins who give 100% effort every time on the court.  These guys lay it on the line every night and play as if they are ready to take a bullet for their team if they have to.

Then we have Terry and Pierce who give between 80%-100% effort every time.  Sometimes they may get a tad lethargic and they do struggle from time to time with their shot, but usually they are leaving everything out there.

Then we have Barbosa, Rondo, Lee, Bass and Green who all range from 20% effort to 100% effort depending on how they feel on the day.  When they get motivated they are dominant, but far too often they are walking around taking their time like they are on a holiday.

Those guys are the problem.

Rondo is the only guy in that group who is talented enough that he can get away with half-effort and still dominate his opponent.  The other guys in that group are all talented enough to dominate, but only if they put 100% effort in to it.

This is why we need to trade some of these guys for either of the following:

1. Guys who play with 100% effort every time

or

2. Guys who are talented enough that they can play with half effort and still dominate

Varejao fits from an effort perspective and Cousins fits from a talent perspective.

The NBA is just too talented these days, and the top teams are just too deep.  You can't play with 50% effort and contend for a title - if you don't put in at least 80% effort every night you're not going to make the playoffs.

Cousins line tonight: 18 pts, 16 rebs (7 off) and 6 assts.  Yeah, we could use that - should have pawned off Avery before Sacto saw tonight's game film.

saw that.  ridiculous
Note that he gets a lot of his offensive rebounds Glen-Davis-style (i.e. due to his own inability to finish consistently around the basket).

So did Moses Malone...

January 15th will be a glorious day. Something/anything needs to happen. I can't watch this team anymore. We are worse than the lakers, hell we are worse than the bucks.

Doc is making questionable decisions but he's working with what he's got. It's not his fault that terry/green/bass are all playing awful and the bench has no size.

I honestly think that at 14-17, 31 games into the season, that these next 10-15 games will determine the season. Judging by the next 4 opponents , the bleeding is only getting worse

I'm usually optimistic and I'm not calling for heads but this game just made me realize how deep of a hole the team is in. Idk if anyone saw but at the end, KG looked very upset.

Good offense in the first—followed by junk for two quarters.

Good defense in the fourth—too bad it was the only such time, and too bad it would've taken GREAT defense to dig out of that 16-point hole they faced going into the fourth.

Mike Conley, Darrell Arthur, and Marreese Speights could be All-Stars—if they played Boston every game.

Boston's Big Three combine to shoot 15 for 39 (38.5%)—but don't worry, that doesn't happen often.

 :-\ Sigh.

I'm still believing in this team, but they're making it awful hard. At least the bench shot well—14 for 25 (56%).

right now any player can become an allstar when playing against our glorious D.

players should also be blamed for playing small ball lineups and for forsaking offensive rebounds or rebounding in general.  ::)

Sullinger is averaging 3.5 offensive rebounds per 36 minutes for us.

For the record Kevin Love is currently averaging 3.5 Offensive Rebounds per game in 36 minutes, and he is currently 11th in the league in offensive rebounds per game.

If a 20 year old, undersized, unathletic, rookie PF with only 30 games of NBA experience can collect offensive rebounds at an elite rate while playing for this team, then that is living proof that you cannot blame our lack of rebounding on Doc or on the Boston system - you can only blame it on the players and their lack of ability and/or effort.

As for the Small Ball comments Fab Melo is in the D league (and out with a concussion) and Chris Wilcox is out with an injury.  Kevin Garnett and Jason Collins are the only players we have who stand above 6'9" so what exactly would you have Doc do?

I actually saw an article recently where Doc was actually quoted admitting to the faults in his logic.  He openly admitted that after it was so successful last year he tried to force the small lineup, but he now realised it wasn't working and he needed to try something different.

After this he moved Collins into the starting lineup and increased his minutes, which is exactly what all of the Doc haters were begging him to do.

So now that Doc has accepted his mistake and made the best change he possibly can with this roster, what more do you want him to do? The only way we can stop playing the small ball lineups is if we have enough talented size to soak up the minutes, and right now we don't.

I assure you that a trade or signing will be made in the next month or two which will change that, but for the time being there really isn't anything else he can do until that Jan 15 deadline passes.  The fact that no deal has yet happened suggests to me that either Barbosa, Lee or Bass (I believe they can't be traded until Jan 15) is going to be a part of a deal.

Personally the only coaching change I'd have liked are:

1. I'd like to have seen more of the Bradley+Collins combination.  The two seem to play extremely well together on defense and were distrupting plays when they were out there together.

2. I'd like to have seen more of Green and Lee, as I think they were both playing pretty well on both sides of the floor tonight.

At this point i'd take any solid big man we could take for Bass and Lee.

It seems to me that the reasons we lose is because KG is not playing 40 minutes. Without KG on the floor, we collapse. We need a backup who can handle some of the defensive load.

Man, was I the only one who thought Doc should have done the AB/Lee lineup early? AB/Lee on D together for just a few minutes of pressuring and annoying can probably work out very well for us.

Doc also sent us to the full court press too late (we started it during the comeback). Yes, AB is just coming back but if you are going to play him then u let him do what he does best (especially if ur going to give him so few mins anyway). You start it with AB, then when Lee subs in you let him do it... it seemed to work well when we did try it, it brought the clock down on them which made them have to hurry/scramble on offense.

I think Doc needs to go back to Bass starting, give us the same lineup as last season that was so great. Sully should be the first big off the bench. I think Collins has done all he is capable of... too bad it's not much/enough.

We need a big, that has been clear since game 1... too bad Doc decided to give up on small ball before Darko got his shot. I also think if Wilcox wasn't hurt he probably would have started over Collins, but who knows.

Bass has been missing most games off the bench (he played okay tonight for the most part)... why not put him back with KG? SULLY AND BASS SHOULD NOT BE IN TOGETHER!!!! If you aren't going to start Bass, start Sully.

NO more starting Collins... it isn't working!!!!

Lee and Jet together is a good thing. Our bench was better than our starters most of the game. I hate when our bench or a player is doing well and then Doc immediately subs them out.

I also hate when a player makes 2-3 baskets in a row and then we don't go back to them again... it's happened to JET quite a bit and at times Jeff Green. Keep going to the hot player!!! No, we go to PP or RR to take dumb shots. We need to be smarter!! KG struggling on offense early and instead of letting someone else shoot we kept forcing him. Yes keep getting KG shots but after he misses 2-3 in a row it's time to stop letting him shoot a couple trips down!!! Same for PP!!

The other day I and my friend were talking about the Cs at a bar and he was like who is the  starting center if KG is playing Forward now...i just acted like i didn't know...I told him KG still starts at center..lol..I was too ashamed  to say Jason Collins...and watch him spit out his drink because how hilarious it was..he was already talking about all the issues we had..i just had to hide that fact... :'(

Yeah, I would've liked to have seen that too. In the second quarter when the team needed a bit of a lift. Their energy and activity defensively could have sparked the team.

I'd like to see Sully get the nod ahead of Bass.

I feel like we already know what Bass can do there and that it is the fail-safe combination ... but we don't really know how much Sully can affect that lineup yet. I'd like to see him given first shot.

Can always go back to Bass in 10-15 games time and then play out the final 35-40 games of the season with him as the starter.

I thought it was an encouraging showing from the team tonight.

They played badly for parts but I liked the effort. I thought they looked much more like a team today than they have done in recent games. So a positive step forward for me.

I think once Rondo gets himself fully healthy from this recent injury + once Doc moves away from this Garnett / Collins starting combo = I think Boston will be in strong shape and will go on a run.

POST SHORTENED
I definitely agree with everything in your post. So many possessions watching people just jack up shots or not even care. I definitely think many of the new guys are just going through the motions just hoping KG and Pierce carry the team to a title. This isn't Miami folks and that won't happen.

+1 on bass with terry rather than lee. i like lee's hustle on defense. i really like to see him more with AB on the backcourt. but i doubt if bass will be dealt watching how huge doc's man crush on him.

I dont think Jet has much value which is why I had to say Lee.

And I have a feelung that Jet will pick it up. He may be struggling, but that man has the heart and nads that not everyone in te team has, we might need that come playoff time.

He needs to do a better job defensively tough, really.

I think Doc needs to go back to Bass starting, give us the same lineup as last season that was so great. Sully should be the first big off the bench. I think Collins has done all he is capable of... too bad it's not much/enough.

I think the problem here is that last season Bass helped stretch the defense with his  midrange game, which was one of the best in the league.

This season Bass has struggled (shooting just 43% from midrange) and his confidence has clearly been affected by that, because he is drastically hessitant to shoot when he gets the ball.

Several times today Bass caught the ball in a situation where last year he would have shot it without a thought - but today he held the ball, looked up as if he considered shooting it, then passed it.  Often this was late in the shot clock, and after the pass there was not enough time for anybody else to get a good look.

Unselish is great, but Bass' hessitation to shoot this season is bad to the point where it's hurting the team.

He has been more willing to drive which is nice, but still not doing it often enough to offset his fear of the jump shot.

I do agree that putting Sully in the starting lineup is  a good idea.

I also agree that Terry + Lee + Green on the bench is a fantastic combination, and I thought our bench often looked better then our starters today.  This is all made possible by the return of Avery Bradley (sending Terry back to the 6th man role) and I think this is the one of the underrated benefits of Bradley's return.
