I still think the best restaraunts are in the South End.  Depending on teh type of itallian you like Stella is alwaysa good choice.

Outside of the restaraunt, the south end is not as romantic and intimate as the north end.

On a side note, if anyone has any suggestions for an Italian place in the Northern suburbs (Medford, Malden, Everett, Saugus, etc.), those would be very welcome.  My wife and I are actually celebrating our 6 month anniversary tonight, and wanted to go someplace up there, rather than dealing with the city...

Chris, being Italian and from the area, I can recommend two places that I frequent. Both have excellent food and one has better ambiance.

The one with so-so ambiance (not low  brow by any means) is La Vita Mia in Saugus on Hamilton St. Their antipasto, hot or cold and their Zuppa DiCasa are great ways to start off a meal. The carbonara di casa is a great dish and their entrees are varied and of good quality.

The one with better atmosphere, with less varied and less numerous entrees but with better ambiance is Bobby Cs on Main St on the Malden-Melrose line. Their clams casino and lobster mac and cheese are excellent appetizers. The veal (esp the chop or the braciolettini), chicken and pasta dishes are very good. Get them with the side of Au Gratin potatoes with prosciutto. (killer side dish)

Bon Appetit!!!

Bobby C's looks great...and right around the corner!  That has definitely jumped to the top of the list.  Thanks!

What about Strega? I know Rondo and Perk were frequent clients there. http://www.stregaristorante.com/

I will second the person who said La Vita Mia in Saugus. Excellent choice. I also like Tresca in the North End. Both are great, great places.

Haha. My good friend who bartends and is a server at Strega would kill me if he knew I didnt suggest it!

But yeah Strega is great. Ask for Dave as your server if you go.

He has waited on almost every member of the Celtics.

  • Another undersized Celtic...

Basketball players don't make a restaurant good, sorry. Many Celts go to Morton's as well and that is hands down the worst steakhouse in Boston.

I know you are talking about The North End but incase you change your mind I have a few pretty legit suggestions...

Sofia's Grotto in Roslindale is AMAZING. They have amazing pasta & home made thin crust pizza and their meat/chicken/fish are always out of this world. They offer really cool outdoor seating with heaters/hanging lights which make you feel like you are in Italy...

Also, right on Route 1 in West Roxbury, Sofia's Italian Steakhouse is really cool. The dining is super fancy (while not too $$$) and the food is always out of the world. One of the best chicken parms in the city aside from Papa Razzi.

Also not in the north end, but Dante in Cambridge is flabbergastingly good for italian.

http://restaurantdante.com/

The sfizi are all excellent, but the arancini is pretty much a must.

In the north end I've been to
http://www.ristorantelimoncello.com/
http://lasumma.com/
http://www.panzarestaurant.com/

and a few others I can't remember; and they are all pretty good, but nothing special.  I feel sometimes like most of those north end restaurants get by on the fact that they are in the north end, and not that they are all that impressive.

I'll throw out an exception to that rule, and that is Mike's and Modern Pastry.  They are as phenomenal as their lines indicate.  I will not make a vote one way or the other.  Lulu's cupcakes is also delicious if you can find her little shop.

EDIT:  Been to giacomo's too, thats pretty decent as well. Probably better than the other three I listed.

I'd recommend the northend, for sure.  Just walking up and down the street is exciting.  Lots of tourists, but lots more locals and regulars, because it's win-win for everybody.  There are dozens of great choices, and the rest are still quite good.

Bricco's and Lucia's are my favorites,  but regardless of which one you pick, follow it up with a visit to Mike's Pastry Shop!  (I'm not even a big pastry fan, but you become one when you go there, as you are overwhelmed by the array.)

Funny I was at Strega last month and in walks Big Baby.   He talked to the hostess for about 10 minutes then walked out.
