He had what 37 points off the bench tonight.  Final year of his contract making 3.5 million

He is not going to come cheap.  One of the top scorers off the bench.  Would like the Celtics to pursue (if the team is serious about wanting to make a run this season)

Trade Idea

To Nuggets:  Yabusele, Nader, 2018 Celtics 1st
To Celtics: Barton, 2018 Nuggets 2nd round pick

And then we have to decide between him and Marcus Smart... that’s the real dilemma: paying him after this season.

You don’t trade two first round picks for a half-year rental. Plus, next year we’ll have Brown Tatum and Hayward taking up all of the minutes.

Focus on this season... You want it to go to waste... Barton 15ppg off the bench (sometimes exploding to 20-30 points if needed) could propel the team to plus 60 wins this season.  More ammo do deal with Cavs and Warriors

Pass. This team usn't giving up valuable future assests for a hakf year rental in a year they stand no chance of making it to the Finals and winning it. Next year, without giving up any assests we get a 20PPG scorer/All-Star andmaybe 2 first round draft picks to a team that could go deep into the EC playoffs and maybe even NBA Finals. You just do not need to make this trade.

There’s no way we’d be getting that 2nd round pick back.

I don’t see Denver doing it and I don’t really see the point in the trade when that 1st can be added to our  treasure chest for a bigger piece if need be. Adding Barton would be situational or impossible if after the trade deadline.

This would make sense at the deadline, for cheap. Maybe if it's Larkin & Nader, and we're moving back from like #30 to #40, AND someone like Rozier or Ojeyele was hurt.

As constructed, though, I think I'd pass.

I like Will Barton. Problem is, he is gonna hit unrestricted free agency next summer.

As things stand right now, our payroll for the 2018-19 season is $107,433,526. That's without Smart and Baynes. According to Shams Charania, the luxury tax threshold in 2018-19 will fall at approximately $120.8 million.

$120,800,000 - $107,433,526 = $13,366,474 to sign Smart, Baynes, our first rounder and possibly the Lakers first rounder as well.

Adding Barton would only make things worse. Not sure whether the owners would be willing to pay both Barton and Smart.

I'd rather stick with the guards/wings that we have because Barton is most likely a half season rental.  I'm also not sure if Barton has a high basketball IQ.  If he is just a volume scorer then it's not the right fit for Brad's system.  I would like to see our team add another stretch big.  They could be a PF/SF or PF/C.  Not sure who will be available but our bench unit would benefit from a player like Kelly Olynyk.  This would help the bench generate good shots more consistently when Kyrie and Horford are off the floor.

Ultimately, I think this is the biggest issue. Also add in the caveat that Irving is up for a new deal after next season. I believe that the owners would like to stay out of the repeater tax status until the season after next.

Next summer will be interesting for sure. Almost makes you wonder if they are slightly better off if the Lakers pick doesn't convey and becomes the SAC pick in 2019. Gives them more breathing room this summer for Smart/Baynes.

Denver is trying to make the playoffs for the first time in several years.  They’ve spent a lot of money to do so.  Barton plays a major role for them — I don’t see him being traded, despite his free agency status this summer.

Pf. This team is likely to win 60+ games without Will Barton.

It will easier with Barton.  Extra 15 points per game = several more wins for this squad
.

Why worried about extensions?  2018 celts first may end up being the 30th pick
