1. Lots of teams are doing this. It's a reason why we're assisting an unprecedented amount of call-ups. I think it's getting close to 40.

2. It's not only a way of controlling the future rights of cheap talent/roster filler but it can be more than that. A smart club like the Spurs created $4 millions in non-guaranteed salaries that can become a valuable trade asset thanks to this kind of move.

3. None of these players are NBA quality now or in the future unlike some of the others called up in the previous month or so. Ainge waited too long before making this move. There are still D-League players way more promising than Lafayette. He was already cut from a D-League team. The only reason he signed is because he's so lucky that his best game of the season was the one Ainge was attending in person.

4. CelticsBlog posters will provide numerous reasons & thorough rationalizations as to why the Celtics must sign these players to long term contracts and that our success will be tied to our 14th and 15th men on the bench.

Why hasn't Doc played Gaffney? The guy needs minutes to develop his game! He NEVER plays the young guys. I think we should sit Sheed or Baby and just see what this kid can do. All the other teams that passed on him are wrong.

  • You say when......
Tony was the heart and soul of the UMass team his senior year and nearly carried them to the NIT championship. He works harder than any player I have ever watched and was the last guy cut by the Lakers. His game improved tremendously while at UMass. If you need a 4th/5th big, I would not count Tony out, and as a UMass alum, I am excited to see the Celtics sign him.

UMASS, UMASS, UMASS..!!! I hope he plays BIG for us....Big time..!

Does anyone know where Gafney's been rehabbing and how game ready he is?

One more:

4.  Their presence reminds our various bench FA's how easily replaced they are, which should help ensure that if the C's want them, they won't be asking for too much money (Hello, Shelden).

At least it indicates that the C's realize that they need some youth and energy down the road. Too little too late unfortunately. Bummed we could not get a legit 6'8" winger to spell Pierce and match with Lebron.

I never saw Gaffney play but his defensive stats certainly are gaudy. 2 steals and 4 blocks a game and he wasn't even playing in the Ivy League!  Top 5 shotblocker, top 20 rebounder/ballhawk in the NCAA last year.

We do need an athletic rebounder/defender 3/4 off the bench.  Crossing my fingers.

No idea who Lafayette is.

I hope that if the Cs cut him the Knicks sign him, just so that when he breaks out we can all have proof, once again, of how Doc doesn't know how to develop young players.

He couldn't play him last night because the paperwork had not been finalized.

Ah, didn't realize that...TP.  I just figured he was still hurt or something, and they just signed him to get a look over the summer.
