Quote
Following through on his vow to bolster his team's depth, Miami Heat President Pat Riley moved closer Tuesday to signing James Jones to a free-agent contract, extending a contract offer to the former University of Miami 3-point specialist.

With the free-agent signing period to commence at midnight, a five-year offer has been extended to Jones, starting at $4 million for next season. The final three years of the contract would be conditional, to protect the Heat for the 2010 free-agency period. -- South Florida Sun-Sentinel

One more fall back replacement for Posey coming off the market.

Okay I started praising Riley, just lavishing praise on him, then realized I hadn't read the quote fully and didn't see the dollar amounts and remembered Miami hadn't used their MLE yet .... 4 years at a starting salary of 4mil per. My goodness gracious.

I like James Jones but come on. He's an 8th man. He's the third guy of your bench. He's a solid defensive player but he isn't a standout, he's barely above average. He can shoot the life out of the ball but he does very little else. He isn't a player who can be a 6th man because he can't change the course of a game. You're paying an 8th man 4mil per season? Wow. Jones likely has to be your second best backup wing unless you have real top notch quality in the backcourt and interior, otherwise you'll have a bad bench.

My goodness

I like how Riley protected himself and the franchise with those final 3 conditional years. I don't see Jones getting through that deal, I'd be very surprised if he did.

What I was praising Riley for was finally adding a jump shooter after letting all those shooters walk after SVG left, and then more, and more left leaving Shaq and Wade in a horrible situation. I was happy Riley realized his mistake and was going about correcting it for the future. James Jones will be a nice player and help Beasley and Wade. Jones and Chalmers gives them two top notch shooters and a decent shooter in Marion. That's a good start. One more shooter and you're home.

Wow that's a big contract. 5 years starting at 4mil per. How does Posey not get the MLE if guys like Jones are getting this type of money?

Also, this really hurts Danny's position on Posey because it takes another potential replacement off the table.

Yep.  All these contracts are making me think that the Celtics should go to MLE for 4 years to bring back Posey.

I am gradually warming up to the idea of a 4 year MLE.  But I wonder if DA could shave $500K off the top of the first year to sign Bill Walker to a three year deal so he isn't lost to FA after two years.  I don't want him to be the Celtics version of GSW-Gilbert Arenas.

Celtics fan for life.

It's not a bad contract. It's basically a 2 yr deal with a bunch of team options. Something the knicks should of done with Duhon. And we should of done with Scal. lol.
