Philadelphia has hired Elton Brand as general manager, league sources tell ESPN. Brand will be elevated from VP of Basketball Operations. He made strong impression on ownership and Brett Brown in process, beating out several inside and outside candidates.

Wow, a lot of hope and responsibility in a guy with limited experience. He really must have blown them away in his interviews.

Seems like a "Yes Man" type of move.
Philly has so much going for them right now. It would be somewhat of a shame to have it derailed because of bad management Naaaaah. Who am I kidding? Hope this blows up in their face.

I think that has already happened. Hinkie got them to where they needed to be. Then, Colangelo decides to draft Fultz instead of Tatum.

I hope they trade for Butler, i will be a joy watching them explode from inside

Sixers wanted to keep their management team in place. Hiring Brand does that. I wouldn't expect him to have anywhere near the level of control that Ainge has.

Trading for Butler would be stupid when he'll be a free agent next offseason. I actually like Butler for them from a skillset perspective. Now his personality might be problematic but Simmons and Embiid >> Wiggins and Towns most especially on defense.

I'm curious as to why you think he would be a good fit alongside those two. He's an excellent defender, a solid playmaker, and a passable shooter from deep, no better nor worse than that. But he attempts 62.7% of his shots from 16 feet or closer in (according to BBRef). That seems to me as if it would clog the mid-range and inside for Simmons and Embiid. Plus, he's always had quite a high usage rate as an All-Star level wing

Seems like an odd move but good but not quite great players often make good coaches and GM's so I think I will give it time before judging the hire.

Just a guy the Philly ownership groups can easily control.

Good for him. I've always liked Elton Brand.

overall bodes well for us. decent chance this doesn't work out well. risky by them i'd say.

Butler's usage was only 25.1% last year. Embiid's usage on the other hand was 33.9% and he was only assisted on 50.2% of his buckets. They need a playmaker like Butler in the half court to reduce Embiid's offensive load. They need a go-to scoring guard or wing at the end of games. I also like Butler's high free throw rate to go along with Embiid's high free throw rate.
Of course, Butler's defense would be a great fit for them.

Yeah, losing him would have been tough, but losing him to the Sixers would have been terrible. He reportedly withdrew, so I figure Ainge and ownership made him a promise to stay.
-
I was worried they would get our guy Zarren. I don't think this is a great hire by them, because it seems like their snake filled ownership group will still pull the strings.

Well, of course they did. Who else is gonna run the Janos Twitter account???

Ownership is certainly a huge advantage in our favor. Definitely not a great hire for them but don't think there was anybody available that was good enough to be worth disrupting their existing management structure.

The Sixers already have a Center with a major injury history, 2 young guards who skipped freshman year due to injury, another current rookie missing the pine. Hey why not hire an injury prone GM!
-
Elton John would have been a better choice.
-
It remains to be seen, but I too, think this was a bold over reach and will come back to bite them.

Interesting, I have listened to him a few times didn't seem to bright to me but what do I know?
