Gameday 4

Here's what we have with one game left:

(The tiebreakers are 1) Head-to-head results; 2) Points difference; 3) Points scored.)

Group A: Greece-Poland play for last spot. Winner plays with Lithuania or Germany. Slovenia, France, Finland have advanced to the next stage (A), Iceland has been eliminated (E).

Group B: If Georgia beats Italy they are through. If they lose, and Israel beats Ukraine, then Israel goes through. Meanwhile, Lithuania plays vs Germany this game will determine who finishes first.

Update: Ukraine has chances too. This scenario was badly phrased on FIBA's website and I took the text from there. I'll re-check it tomorrow.

Group C: Czech Republic and Romania out

Group D: Belgium and GB out

The knockout stage goes A1-B4, A2-B3, etc and C1-D4, C2-D3 etc.

@Androslav Great game by Croatia.

@ahsan we'll be fine. This is a transitional phase for them.

It's impossible to forget komazec. He was better shooter than Drazen but he didn't have even half of his desire to be great. He had depression I think ... Sad story.

Compared to Komazec Stojakovic is Marcus Smart .

I remember USSR and Yugoslavia 1988-1990 teams as a collection of all-stars. I can proudly say that some Spanish teams of around 2010-2011 is the closest thing to it, and the transition has been good to new players: Hernangómez brothers, Abrines, Ricky Rubio.

PG: Raúl López, Calderón
SG: Navarro, Llull
SF: Rudy Fernández, Claver
PF: Pau Gasol, Garbajosa
C: Marc Gasol, Ibaka
Depth chart: Felipe Reyes, San Emeterio.

We have many interesting matches deciding the final win-or-go-home games. Stay tuned.

Another TP goes to Greece for his phenomenal work here.

Regarding Group B: For Ukraine to go through, they have to beat Israel and Italy to beat Georgia.

Re Komazec: I found a NYT article reporting a rumour that while playing in Greece he attempted suicide twice. (can't copy paste, NYT won't allow, you can read the article here http://www.nytimes.com/1996/01/20/sports/waiting-for-a-ticket-to-the-nba.html?mcubz=0 )

Yugoslavia 1988-91

Olympic Games, 1988 Seoul - silver

FIBA EuroBasket, 1989 Yugoslavia - gold
MVP - Petrović
FIBA World Cup, 1990 Argentina - gold
MVP - Kukoč
FIBA EuroBasket, 1991 Italy - gold
MVP - Kukoč

The youth of this squad is amazing. Key players are just 20-25 years old. Here is the recap from that run:

@Dario, Spain is, without question, the strongest Euro team since and definitely in that tier. I do think that Yu-team had an even deeper roster, particularly with so many outside shooters/scorers.

I wouldn't put too much stock in that suicide attempt rumor, I think it is the press making up things.

To be honest because of Rudy and Calderon i don't like Spain much but the Gasol-Navaro lead teams are totaly on the top. Very deep , great talent in every position and of course Pau Gasol.... The London OG team was imo the best Spanish NT.

But in a game against 91 Yugoslavia i'd go with Yugoslavia.  I'd love to watch that a game! (or 91 Yugoslavia VS the Original Dream Team)

Yes, I should have added this article is the only result about Arijan that comes up when you google 'Komazec depression'.

@Androslav Yes, maybe that team was better, but we tend to overrate the past and it is hard to compare, because the game has evolved in so many ways in those last 30 years.

Our record in the last 20 years is not bad also:

Winners of Eurobasket in 2009, 2011, 2015. Silver in 1999, 2003 and 2007. Bronze in 2001, 2013.
Olympic silver medals in 2008 and 2012, bronze in 2016. It is much more difficult now with NBA players than before 1992.
World champions 2006.

Pretty consistent generation based on Navarro and Gasol.

@Ederson  I hate Rudy Fernández, dirty, flopper and bad mannered.

Ukraine is leading by 20+ points in the 4th quarter. Assuming they win, the rankings

Group A: 1. Slovenia 2. France 3. Finland 4. Greece

Group B: 1. Lithuania 2. Italy 3. Germany 4. Ukraine

The pairs for the next round: Slovenia - Ukraine; France - Germany; Finland - Italy; Greece - Lithuania. iirc all games are in Istanbul.

update: Gameday 5 (first half)
