advanced metrics show that, when playing his natural PF position, josh smith is one of the very best defenders in the NBA - we're talking near-KG levels. keep in mind he was the leader and best player on a perennial mid-level playoff team, but on detroit he's been pushed further from the basket, where he's not quite as elite on defense, and is a much weaker shooter.
a trade that is both feasible and makes sense for both teams is jeff green for josh smith. detroit gets a true wing player, and boston gets the defensive big man that it needs.
this also leaves boston with the option of getting another wing player in the draft. assuming that player can shoot, that leaves boston with 2 strong shooters in olynyk and the new wing, bradley is also solid, and that would allow smith and rondo to focus on being the athletic freaks that they are. keep in mind danny also has the brooklyn pick, as well as the traded player exception and expirings. maybe danny turns some of those assets into a very good bench player.
lineup:
rondo - pressey
bradley - CJ
high lottery pick - wallace
smith - bass
olynyk -sullinger
