Could we grab Obi in that Jazz/Knicks trade? He fits into one of our trade exceptions and we'd send out another first round pick to Danny.
liam, you've suggested that twice on this page. Personally, I'm not giving up a 1st round pick for a what, 12th man at best. Beyond that, C's already have traded away 1st round picks. They have to start re-building their stash of pick assets, not trading them away.

I see Toppin more as a third big. I see Toppin as a better asset than that really late first will bring. He's on a low contract until 2024.
I'd give up a late 1st for Toppin as well.  Dude was one of the best players in college and then a lottery pick not that long ago.  Knicks are so terribly run can't put much stock in anything they do, but even in the limited minutes Toppin has performed pretty well.  5th from the draft class in WS/48, a positive BPM and VORP, etc.  Definitely worth a 1st as a flyer on him.  Kid has talent.

I'd love to see what our coaching and BIg Al could do with him.

Does he lack horizontal quickness like the other posters here suggested?

As mentioned before I've just been watching highlights so maybe I'm completely wrong. But he looks like Ama're Stoudemire out there, who also suffers from lack of horizontal quickness.

But I suppose it's also effort. Guys like Hayward and Klay aren't rocking the world with horizontal quickness but make do as very good-great defenders (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y589G84w03E&t=458s&ab_channel=ThinkingBasketball)

Also, I think Thibs coached a Knicks team featuring Bobby Portis and maybe Noah Vonleh to a top defense? I feel Portis/Vonleh/Toppin are kind of have the same type of athleticism.

I think Obi Toppin would be a fine replacement for Gallinari in the rotation.  Different players, certainly, but I’d be fine giving him Gallo’s 15-20 minutes a game if we could shake him loose from NY.

He would cost something more than a 2nd? Wouldn't he?

Not sure. The Knicks have been shopping him hard and some believe they might not even pick up his year 4 option.  We do have a potentially valuable 2nd from Houston this year, that could be in the 33-35 range.

I don't want to give up any assets at this time. I think there are vet min guys that may eventually think this is their best opportunity.

Really? He would cost his full 5.4M against the cap (20Mish in tax). What translates so much from the NYK?

OK. I want this team to be stacked more than I care about onwerships money.

Me too, more interested in the first round pick.
I like the player.

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
If I were the C's I'd be targeting Chuma Okeke or Jonathon Isaac with a protected 1st. There aren't enough minutes in Orlando by a country mile for both. I don't know how the money would work with Isaac.

Toppin is incredibly athletic. Could fit nicely into the Celtics' switching scheme if he bought in.

It would depend on the cost but if the Knicks really aren't interested in keeping him he'd be a nice little gamble.

He'd be really good as a bench energy big for us.

If Boston could acquire Toppin for merely a 1st round pick you pretty much have to do that.  Well worth it.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip
