I know there were some games last weekend (ha ha Nebraska), but the season really gets going Thursday night with a major Big Ten game with #4 Ohio State traveling to Minnesota.  Then this weekend there are a few ranked v. ranked games starting with 19 Penn St at 12 Wisconsin at noon, 1 Alabama v. 14 Miami at 330 in Atlanta, 17 Indiana at 18 Iowa at 330, 23 Louisiana at 21 Texas at 430, and concluding with the biggest game of the weekend 5 Georgia v. 3 Clemson at 730 (in Charlotte).  Saturday also has 16 LSU going to UCLA in an interesting Big 5 intraconference battle.  Sunday night also has a game and it is two major programs 9 Notre Dame at Florida St.

Pretty interesting slate of games for the first week of the season, especially with many of the Big Ten teams opening their season with conference games (something they don't normally do).

After Texas and Oklahoma announced their move from the Big 12, it appears the remaining 8 Big 12 teams are in discussions to go back up to 12 by adding football independent BYU and then 3 teams from the American - Cincinnati, Central Florida, and Houston.  Nothing has been finalized, but it appears that is what they are looking at.

If they added those 4, they would likely end up with divisions that look like this

East - West Virginia, Central Florida, Cincinnati, Kansas, Kansas St., Iowa St.
West - Baylor, Texas Tech, TCU, Houston, Oklahoma St., BYU

Significantly weaker overall than the other 4 power conferences, but also a good deal better than the little 5.

My favorite sport and the only one I consistently pay attention to anymore.  Hopefully all the major changes that are happening won't screw that up.

But when would it happen?  Are they going to wait until 2025 or are they work out a deal with Texas and OU?

The 4 schools are all going to apply next week, and they will all be approved.  BYU can join basically any time (at least in football) as they are independent (obviously not this season).  The 3 American schools have 27 months and 10 million, though the American has let teams out earlier with extra money, so the earliest would be 2023, but 2024 is more likely so the Big 12 would have 14 teams for 1 season or maybe 2 if the American schools get out early.

Be curious to see what the American does as they'd be down to 8: Memphis, Navy, SMU, Temple, Tulane, ECU, Tulsa, S. Florida

That doesn't seem very sustainable.  Maybe they bring UConn back to the conference and add Liberty, both are independents.  UMass, New Mexico St., and Army are also independent.  Geographically, Liberty would make the most sense.  CUSA has 14 teams as well, perhaps the American takes 2 from there.

The problem is that would divide the same pot of TV money across 14 teams rather than 10.  ESPN isn't going to renegotiate their deal for those 4 teams.  Now maybe those teams get a smaller portion under the current contract and don't get an equal portion until the new TV contract.  The Irate8 teams would also not want to share any money they get from Texas and OU leaving.

Nice upset win by Virginia Tech over North Carolina.  Michigan State looks good too.  Maybe they'll at least provide a speed bump for OSU.

The Big 12 has officially added BYU, Cincinnati, Houston, and Central Florida.  BYU has announced that it will join for the 2023-2024 school year.  The American schools could still join for that year, but the following year is more likely.

How the mighty have fallen.

Maybe Nebraska should move back so that they can be relevant again.

The Big 8 back in the day, with Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Colorado and Missouri at their peaks in the 70's and 80's was an amazing football conference. Run, run, and run again. Those teams were putting up 300-400 yard rushing games on the regular. It was a joy to watch.

To be fair, Cincinnati finished last year ranked in the top 10 and started in the top 10 this year (and also finished 2018 and 2019 ranked in the top 25).  They have a pretty solid coach and are located in a very good high school football city and state.  They obviously will never beat out Ohio State for the uber talents, but just getting the players OSU doesn't want locally and they can end up consistently with a very strong team.  They are a program on the rise.

BYU finished last year ranked 11th and was in the top 10 for much of the year.  They have a fairly big national audience and go through periods where they are a top tier team (even winning a national title in 1984).

Central Florida was unbeaten and a top 6 team in 2017 and finished 11th in 2018.  They have been ranked off an on for over a decade.  And like Cincinnati, play in a very strong recruiting state and a major city in that state.

Now don't get me wrong they have no where near the name recognition or history of Texas/Oklahoma or the recent success of Oklahoma, but they are better than the rest of the conference, which I guess is your point, but they actually strengthen the conference a great deal.

Everyone will see how far Nebraska has fallen when they face Oklahoma later this season.

Nebraska should have stayed in the Big 12, but $$$$$ is everything these days and greed will eventually destroy college football.
We are well on our way with the new NIL rules. Hundreds of thousands of dollars to college sophomores ? Not a good idea.
