It's pretty discouraging to be losing hair (I'm 24; 25 in a couple months). The sad part is that I'm almost just accepting it as fact, since I feel there's nothing I can really do about it. Also my life has been so hectic and busy recently, that I've not devoted as much time/research as I probably should have.

I started losing it about a year ago, and always had great, thick hair my entire life. My hair loss is occurring primarily towards the front of my scalp/head. I'm willing to try any "relatively" inexpensive options. I'm not against taking medicines such as Propecia and/or Advecia, but I'm not crazy about adding medications, and I've heard that once you stop, you're hair loss pretty much just starts again.

I know I'm not the only one going through this, or having gone through this...If anyone had any positive experiences with any medicines, shampoo's, etc. (or any other kind of advice) please let me know.

I have a buddy whose hair started running away when he was 22...he was convinced he could just live healthier and eat better...and it would stop.

He's now 26 and on something..I don't know if its propecia or rogain or what..but he no longer thinks he can just stop it. Not a lot out there that beats genetics.

I'm not bald, or balding, but have had plenty of friends who lost their pretty heavily by your age.  One tried something that looked silly, then let it go.  I honestly don't see anything bad looking with going bald.  Just embrace it.  Keep the hair you have short and go with it.  The other stuff just makes it look weird IMO.

Easy for me to say I suppose.

Didn't really answer your question at all either.

Guess that's a good sign I should go to bed.

Good luck.

Yup

I have heard that washing it in vinegar helps but I don't know of any scientific evidence there is to back that up.

I know vinegar is somewhat of a miracle liquid but....

There's not much you can do except try Rogaine or Propecia. Neither drug, however, is likely to help a receding hair line.

I started losing my hair when I was in high school. I'm in my twenties now, got a nice receding hair line, and fine, thin hair on top. I'll probably be bald by age 30.

The best advice I can give you is to embrace it. Propecia is expensive, could have some undesirable side effects, and probably won't help you much to grow hair (however it will probably do a good job at maintaining the hair you've got). Rogaine, in my opinion, just isn't even worth the hassle.

I've basically conceded to the fact that I'll be bald, and I'm starting to come to grips with it. If you just let it go, you'll eventually except it. Try working on things you can control and not things that are fated by genetics. Work on your physique, wardrobe, etc.

Anyway, if you must have hair, talk to Tom Brady. Every year he seems to have a little more hair than before.

I'll be turning 24 in couple of weeks. And I finally came to terms with my Thinning Hair. I'm not bald at least not yet, but I have loss quiet a bit of hair. I can't speak about your condition. So if its stressful and depressive, I suggest you get help and find a specialist.

Otherwise take @Redz advice, embrace it and have fun with it. Its probably a sign of the ever changing times as you enter the next phase of your life. Keep it short and clean is the best advice I can give you.

There's forums online for this stuff you can check out.  My father and grandfather both went bald, but I was clearly losing all my hair way too soon... 26.  I was losing it rapidly.  I have a major widows peak.  I could rub my head and hair would fall out.  It's just hair, but it was pretty depressing... mostly, because I kept thinking... "how am I going to continue to date 18 year old girls if I look like Phil Collins"... So I went to a dermatologist.  She said the same thing everyone says.  Propecia and Rogaine.

I read a lot of positive stuff about propecia in that it slows the loss of hair.  Rogaine supposedly might re-grow some hair.   Rogaine sounded a lot more iffy to me than propecia... so I gave propecia a try.  She gave me a prescription for generic finasteride that is actually supposed to be used for enlarged prostates.  1/4th a pill is propecia.  It's cheaper that way.  My insurance covered it.

It's been a couple years... I'm 28 now... and I'd say I've definitely had a good experience with it.  I can compare pictures of myself on facebook from a couple years ago and see a small difference.  Don't get me wrong... it's not like I have a shaggy head of hair now.  It did exactly what I hoped/expected it would do... it stopped/slowed my hair from falling out.  It's not going to regrow hair... it's just going to make the hair you still have thicker.  I still have the widows peak, but prior to taking that stuff my hair was so thin I looked like a cancer patient.  I've had none of the "negative" effects that anyone talks about (with propecia they say the only real negative effect is sexual issues in like 1% of the people who take it, but I'm dubious it has anything to do with propecia... think about the age and mentality of the people who typically are going to be taking it.  I haven't had any issue whatsoever)

I'm still considering taking Rogaine for a while but for now I'm fine with the propecia/finasteride.  I'm sure I'll go bald eventually... but if I can slow it down until I at least hit 30 it would be nice.  Oh... and I'm still dating 18 year olds... so there's that.

I do not experience hair loss, but being in the medical profession I can tell you that over a great period of time, and many years of testing and practical experience, Rogaine and Propecia have proven to be the most effective, while, as with any drug, the results are not 100% positive, and do not work on everyone.

As is evident in most of the replies in this thread, I'm just reiterating what has already been affirmed. One of my best buddies used the same treatments but it's affect on him was not worth the investment, so he went with the "shave the head" route, and actually looks great that way.

Some people do not have skulls that are shaped in a way that look attractive without hair, but he actually looks better that way than he did with hair, (and most who know him feel the same).

Good luck to you!

I like how you phrased this as a question.

Bladness runs in my family, but I started thinning on the crown a lot earlier than my Dad did.  I was very skeptical about using minoxodil (rogaine chemical).  But if you use it early enough I must say it does work.

I recommend trying it.  I use a generic brand of extra strength menoxodil (kirkland signature) from Costco.

I've noticed (so have my parents and fiance) a huge difference when I use it.  I generally put it on at night and when I get up in the morning.  And sometimes I don't use it as often and I can notice it starting to get thinner again.  So I know once I stop using it I know what's going to happen.
