For the basis of this post, see my first post about the Net Impact of our young guards.
In this post I'll discuss the impact of our young bigs, Sully, KO, and Zeller, and compare them to similar young bigs.
1. Sully vs Other Young Starter(ish) Bigs
Sully - 43.8 POS / 28.1 NEG ... 15.7 NET in 28.7 minutes
Markieff Morris - 42.5 POS / 30.4 NEG ... 12.1 NET in 30.8 minutes
Motiejunas - 35.6 POS / 25.6 NEG ... 10.0 NET in 27.9 minutes
Tristan Thompson - 40.3 POS / 22.8 NEG ... 17.5 NET in 29 minutes
Faried - 41.8 POS / 25.6 NEG ... 16.2 NET in 26.7 minutes
Thompson and Faried shine here because of their high field goal percentage and offensive rebounding. Sully looks pretty good, especially compared to Morris and Motiejunas, who are probably more similar in the role that they play (they take jumpers). Thompson is a major beneficiary of playing with elite scorers.
2. Kelly vs Other Young Offensive Minded Combo Bigs
Olynyk - 37.6 POS / 26.1 NEG ... 11.5 NET in 24.6 minutes
Cody Zeller - 31.9 POS / 21.0 NEG ... 11.9 NET in 23.9 minutes
Mason Plumlee - 39.7 POS / 22.3 NEG ... 17.4 NET
Marcus Morris - 37.0 POS / 23.5 NEG ... 13.5 NET in 23.2 minutes
Kanter - 38.1 POS / 28.7 NEG ... 9.4 NET in 26.6 minutes
Kelly is just okay here. His defensive rating and fouls hurt him here. Mason Plumlee stands out, but he's close to a pure center and so gets blocks, offensive rebounds, and free throw attempts while shooting a high percentage. What surprises me here is that Marcus Morris comes out better than this brother even though he plays fewer minutes and has a more perimeter oriented style. Kanter is even more underwhelming than I anticipated.
3. Zeller vs Other Young Backup Centers
Tyler Zeller - 34.2 POS / 21.3 NEG ... 12.9 NET in 19.7 minutes
Gobert - 38.0 POS / 18.4 NEG ... 19.6 NET in 21.3 minutes
Len - 28.6 POS / 20.0 NEG ... 8.6 NET in 20.4 minutes
O'Quinn - 26.9 POS / 20.9 NEG ... 6.0 NET in 18.7 minutes
Lavoy Allen - 32.0 POS / 19.9 NEG ... 12.1 NET in 22.1 minutes
Zeller looks pretty good here, though he's older than Len. Rudy Gobert is a beast. Even if he's never more than a 20 minute guy, he's doing a lot of nice things in his second season. Lament this guy, not Giannis or Dieng (though those guys are good too). Looks like Danny probably missed another very productive pogo stick in Gobert after famously passing on Deandre Jordan for some athletic swing guy I honestly can't even remember now. Len is still raw, while OQuinn and Allen are bargain basement bigs. Zeller was a nice find, though, given the cost to get him.
Results pretty much confirm my impressions - the Celtics have a few solid players. Still, none of these guys is the cream of the crop among the younger guys who play the same role.
I mean, check out Draymond Green.
45.3 POS / 25.8 NEG ... 19.5 NET in 31.9 minutes.
For a guy who can defend 3 positions and stretch the floor, that's fantastic. That's a better overall total than Dirk, who plays similar minutes and gets 17.1 NET.
