Man, this sucks. Despite his best years coming after being a Celtic (including nearly beating us in 76!) I always had great respect for him. I only first hand saw him as a coach, but even in that realm I liked what he did.

Here's hoping to a speedy recovery! The game, and the world more importantly, would be worse off without him

Best wishes on a recovery.

Trading him away was one of Red’s worst trades.  I loved those Suns teams he coached, too.

That sucks. Always came across as a really good person as well as being an exceptional player and a talented coach who preached fun exciting basketball. Just sucks ...

Looked like a good trade when it was made, for Charlie Scott. We did win it all the year after the trade (vs Suns, led by Westphal, who was otherworldly). But yeah, turned out to be a bad trade, short sighted like Billips for Kenny Anderson, and Joe Johnson for Delps and Rogers.

Sort of how we would all feel today if we had traded rights to draft Jaylen Brown for Jimmy Butler, IMO.

This is a terrible form of cancer.  So sorry to hear this and hope he and his family can have quality time together in the coming months. I believe this was John McCain's cancer and I had a close friend who died of it.   Hope he's able to beat the odds.

Prayers for Paul Westphal

I was too young to remember his Celtics playing days but I remember him as the coach of the Suns with Majerle, Barkley, KJ and Danny in that epic series with the Bulls. Best wishes for his recovery.
