According to Chris Forsberg and others at ESPN.com

Doc on Offensive Rebounds

"I can tell you, you don’t offensive rebound, you stop transition, you win more games than when you get offensive rebounds. I can guarantee you that on those stats." "Obviously, we would like to get some offensive rebounds, and if we’re under there we’ll take them, and we didn’t get any, but that is not why we lost," said Rivers. "Let me just say that. Offensive rebounds are the least of our problems.”

I'd agree, except that we're the worst defensive team in transition (see below) and our half-court defense is garbage so far.  This defensive philosophy won't work if we can't fix these problems.

Transition Defense

"They're allowing 1.427 points per play in transition this season, last in the league. Boston's transition defense has steadily dropped off the last few seasons."

KG's Impact

"When Kevin Garnett is on the court, Boston has a defensive rating of 94.6, which would be the best mark in the league. But he doesn't play 48 minutes a night. So when Garnett has been off the floor, Boston's defensive rating is 114.2, which would be the worst in the league by a large margin."

Celtics this season with KG in/out of game
--             In    Out
Def rtg    94.6    114.2
Def Reb pct    76.1    70.5
Opp FG pct    42.3    49.0

I'm not going to say that this proves that KG is the most valuable player on the team, but it's something I've always believed.

Rebounding Numbers

look at Boston’s rebound percentages during the Big Three era with league rank in parentheses:
Year          Def Reb%           Off Reb%       Total Reb %
2012-13    74.2 (11)    16.6 (30)    46.0 (30)
2011-12    72.4 (20)    19.7 (30)    47.3 (28)
2010-11    74.7 (9)    21.1 (30)    49.5 (20)
2009-10    73.8 (13)    22.8 (28th)    49.1 (25)
2008-09    75.6 (3)    27.9 (8th)    52.8 (2)
2007-08    74.4 (8th)    26.6 (18th)    51.9 (8th)

We're not as bad as I thought on defensive rebounding.  After watching us get crushed on the glass by Brooklyn, Utah, and SA, I'd figure we were closer to 25th-30th.
