The flat-top was clearly holding him back!

This is clearly not the same JB that was given fits by Kyle Korver a while back. Awesome to see his improvement. That dribble breakdown of Lyles & Aldridge for the easy layup was awesome
'23 Historical Draft: Orlando Magic.

PG: Terry Porter (90-91) / Steve Francis (00-01)

TP for the thread. The leap he’s made this year is a joy to see. Knew he was working hard, wasn’t sure he was going to grow this way.

It's a relief that he finally got the opportunity to shine on the basketball court. Imo he was going to break out this season if he got the ball enough, his play in FIBA was very promising.

Yeah, Jaylen’s been awesome! This shouldn’t be surprising to the JB believers, but it’s still fantastic to see. Some of the moves we saw tonight were elite level.

It is a total bummer Hayward is out, but Jaylen should be able to have have free reign. Hopefully he and the Cs keep on rolling.

Brown's handles and ability to make plays going to the rim have been awesome so far this season. I think he is taking the leap into one of the premier players on the wing in the NBA. Just watch these highlights. Watch how the ball is on a string. Watch how he makes multiple moves. Watch how the game has slowed down for him on drives.

One of the gripes against Brown has been his playmaking and handles. People have consistently said that he didn't have the ability to make plays, or that he is a straight line driver, not a creator. I think we all saw hints, but he couldn't consistently put it together.

Now he is putting it together. It's beautiful.

Mods, I couldn't find a thread to post this. So merge if you deem fit.

Brown is a very hard worker and has gotten better year after year! His ceiling is so high!

I thought his ceiling is Jimmy Buckets but he seems to be heading the Kawhi Leonard route too.

Some Jaylen numbers for this year and last

PPG: 18.8 up from 13.0
RPG: 6.4 up from 4.2
APG: 2.0 up from 1.4
MPG: 30.0 up from 25.9
TOPG: 1.2 down from 1.3
FG %: 52.2 up from 46.5
3PT%: 26.3 down from 34.4
FT%: 79.2 up from 65.8
PER: 20.7 up from 13.5
TS%: 60.6 up from 54.7
WS/48: 0.198 up from 0.076
USG%: 23.5 up from 22.1
TO%: 7.2 down from 10.1

Every single stat is improved except 3PT%. And his defense has been stellar. Case in point.

His current difference between offensive rating(110.9) and defensive rating(95.2) is an amazing +15.7.

BTW just want to say that in the predict Jaylen's numbers thread I had said this:

I think Jaylen is going to surprise a bunch of his detractors here on CelticsStrong. I could easily see him grabbing control as a #2 scorer while putting up All-Defense quality defense.  19-20 PPG, 5.5-6 rebounds 2.5-3 assists with a TS% around 59-60% is what I think he shows in this, his breakout year.
I still stand by this and hope my numbers are a tiny bit conservative. Really will be good to see Jaylen have a bunch of game's like last night's until Gordon returns. I still think that #2 scoring option is in Jaylen's grasp, especially if he can get to the line a lot and hit his FTs at an 80+% rate for the season(like last night)and if his 3PT% increases to a more normal, for him, 35+% rate.

538 has debuted a new rating system this season called Raptor.  So far Jaylen rates best amongst all Celtics, and 15th in the NBA.

Here is an explanation of the methodology.

he has greatly improved his handle/finishing ability in the off-season. Where before he would lose the ball or get stuck in the paint he is now able to blow by guys with his athleticism and finish in the paint.

its a thing of beauty

The most impressive thing to me is how much better he’s gotten at the rim finishing. Hesi moves, using his left hand, using his body to shield defenders. Massive step forward in that sense and you can tell.

He’s been off from three but he’s been a pleasure to watch overall.

As he starts to show more offensive finesse out there, it's also making it more apparent just how much more athletic he is than everyone else. If he keeps improving his toolkit for manipulating defenders, I think there is going to have to be a major reevaluation of what his ceiling is.

Ya I'm as bullish on Jaylen as anyone but he's exceeding even my expectations thus far, I dont think I factored in how much f the load the C's main 4-5 guys would be taking. Now with hayward out he's gonna have to probably take on even more usage an probably more playmaking responsibility. Will be interesting to see what he does with it.

My comp for Jaylen is James Worthy, who was a guy that was #2 or #3 scorer on those great 80's Laker teams that had Kareen and Magic.  I know their games are a little different.

A guy with Jaylen's athleticism, if he can change speeds and hit floaters and turnarounds in the paint, without losing the ball, will become almost impossible to guard.

When a guy slows down like Jaylen has, watch out!

Totally agree with these as big improvements. What I really wasn’t sure he could do is what he does to make those shots - he doesn’t drive on a straight line anymore. He can euro step, and his crossover and change of direction can be lightning. Doesn’t have to think about it, just gets past the first defender. I used to think a player either had that or he didn’t. Jaylen didn’t have it went he started but he does now!
