I thought looking at things a bit differently, by position so that names of all players who will be available are grouped together, would be a cool way of looking at things. Here's a list broken down with their current salary(in millions unless less than $1 million) listed with them. I'm going to post this and then update it with the salary because my laptop is on the fritz and I don't want to lose the work.

BTW, I can't take all the credit for this. The list and salaries are from this link:

TP for this interesting post.

After reading this I think some good options would be:

1. Try and get Marbury back for limited money and convince him to play a little more than last season but maybe not that 6th man role he talked about

2. Get some shooting by bringing Wally back for the minimum

3. For backing up Paul Pierce, it would be ideal to offer the LLE to Grant Hill. I don't think we can land Artest (who would be huge in this defensive oriented team)

4. Try and land one of the two ex Pistons big forwards (McDyess or Wallace) by using the MLE. Ideally, we could use the MLE to sign one of those and a Center:

5. See how much Nesterovic asks.  In any case, and for the sake of Celticsblog discussions, how about taking a look at Robert Swift?

How do you think Kobe would feel about terminating his contract early and joining us? Would he accept the MLE and have Ray could come off the bench? He could then put to bed the "no rings without Shaq" story? I think we should pursue it.

Seriously though, my number #1 choice is Ron Artest. Failing that, Marion. Either would be absolutely incredible.

Artest or Marion would be amazing...but I really doubt they would come here. MLE is a nice amount of money, but I honestly believe both are worth more.

As I was already aware PG is the thinnest talent and affordability wise as a backup for Rondo.  Missing from that list are Steve Francis (if he doesn't retire) and Livingston (if he can still play) I'd take a flyer on either of those depending on what else is out there.  I think we have a shot a Bibby because he's Eddie's brother-in law, but he still may command too much money.  Outside of that I don't know Flip Murray?

The Wings suprisingly are loaded with available talent,  I'd take, Hill, Marion, (not banking on Artest), Udoka, Barnes, and Ariza (though I think he's a long shot).  I think we could sign one of those and still get Ross for the minimum easily.

Big men:  Sheed, Dice, Smith, Rasho, Birdman, Marshall, Wilcox, Stephen Hunter or an easy trade swapping TA for Sean Williams (still think he's a player just in the wrong system). Plus we will resign one of the Baby/Powe tandem if not both.

All that is to say backup PG will be the toughest to fill, I maintain someone will offer Marbury more money and minutes than we will have to offer, but if that doesn't happen I'd take him....

Good post, great list...my ideal summer in free agancy?

1. Magloire for the Vet min, I really like the idea of him and Perk as the muscle.

2. Rasheed Wallace with the Mid level. I like his inside out game with KG and even Perk

3. Anthony Carter, Anthony Johnson, Marbury or even Smush Parker for the Vet Min

4. Von Wafer with the LLE

5. Move Big Baby, Giddens & TA to Toronto for Sean Marion in a sign and trade worth about $7-8 Mil. Baby re-signed for about $4 mil. Two or three year deal.

6. Resign Powe

Perkins / Magloire / Scal
Garnett  / Rasheed / Powe
Pierce / Marion / Walker
Ray Allen / Von Wafer / House
Rondo / Carter or Johnson / Pruitt

So here's the game, which 'old friends' on this list would the C's pick for a 1-5 lineup if they had to?

My list:
Marbury
R Davis
D. Miles
G. Davis
M Blount

Ouch--that hurt!

Great thread, btw.

Darng, now I can't stop thinking about how good would be Artest for the MLE here. He could play the 3/4 spots, be the sixth man of this team. He would be an improved version of Posey but without the coolness... would he consider a similar offer of 1 year as Pose did in 2007? Just wondering

Some of those guys look like pipe dreams (Marion, Kidd) but it's somewhat possible so I left them in there. A bunch of players on the list are third string point guards, third string centers or fifth big in the rotation, or fifth string wings.

I'm not a fan of all of them, mostly some of the restricted free agents who'd cost real money to acquire .... But I think they can all offer something to the team if in the right role.

Point Guards

I think Lindsay Hunter may finally be done as we saw him very little against the Bulls. RFAs are always hard to get since teams don’t like to bid up a player that will just take it back to the team holding the right of refusal. Can drop Nate and Jarrett Jack since there’s no way they’re going at the prices listed. I don’t see House or Johnson taking the ETO or Kidd or Marbury playing for less than the full MLE. My best guess is that you’re looking at some one like Knight (who has a rep as a bad locker room guy, but would be coming into one  with strong leaders),  Flip Murray, Anthony Carter or some one not on the list. Luther Head should be available too as he’s barely hanging in the league, but he’s not really a vet like the other 3. Head and Murray are combos who are more SGs (Like Eddie) while Carter and Knight are true PGs. Seems like very slim pickings so I wouldn’t be surprised if we pick up Pruitt’s option and stay pat with TA as a 4th.

Shooting Guards

Think you can cross Wally off, besides this is one slot I don’t see a need for. Gordon wants big money and is out of our league at his current number. Von Wafer has played very well for Houston, so he’s not going for the minimum and I don’t see anyone getting Kleiza cheap as an RFA.

Small Forwards

I can’t see Marion or Ariza or Williams going in a range that we can pay. Barnes is an energy guy who chucks 3s and plays no defense. No thanks.  Hermann’s an interesting player and Grant Hill seems like a very good fit. Wants a ring, comes cheap and is on a team going no where with or without him.

Power Forwards

Several possibilities here. McDyess seems like the best fit. I don’t see Big Baby getting a big offer and I wouldn’t match if he did.

Centers
From what I saw of Collins and Ratliff, I’d say they’re toast and Moore would be a better option to keep

As I was having laptop problems yesterday, I want to apologize for not finishing off the salaries in the OP until today. I thought I was having battery problems but it turn out to be the outlet chord on the charger was no good and I had to get another. So I finished of the salaries in the OP today.

I also want to give a big TP to Who for doing what I was going to do which was exactly what he did. Great job Who.

On an aside, how does Who not have over 1000 TPs considering he probably has more high quality and knowledgeable posts on basketball than any other poster on this site. Just amazes me that Who's TP total is so low!!!

As I perused this list over and over I was amazed at the attainable quality that was in the SF and PF positions. Yes there's quite a bit of people that are available in the other positions but so many are over paid and won't ETO or others are just horrible quality or too good not to be matched by their teams

This list really does open some eyes regarding just how overpaid big men are. The list of PFs and Cs that aren't worth anywhere near what they made last year is astounding.

Anyway the point I think I was trying to make while posting the free agents this way is that if the Celtics are indeed going to spend the MLE(and maybe even LLE) this summer they will need to act quickly and decisively. The amount of quality in players that will be worth putting some money on is less than people think and the competition will be fierce. There are 2-3 good centers and 5-6 good PFs and 4-5 good SFs to choose from. I'm not thrilled with the PG and SG options and about the only player in either group I would offer more than the minimum on would be Dahntay Jones.

So if the Celtics are spending, go big and probably for short years. Those areas are littered with bigs that are older and not worth more than a year or two. Marion as a one year, prove you still have it MLE is an interesting thought. The only uy I lock up long term in that group is Pachulia. For that matter Zaza and Ariza and Baby are the only guys in the entire free agency that I would lock up for more than 2 years.

Nick, this is a great thread and I thank you for it. To your previous post, I would lock Chris Anderson up for 2+ years if I could in addition to Davis, Ariza and Pachulia.

You hit the nail on the head when you said that we "need to act quickly and decisively" because if we don't, we will lose out. I hope (and think) that Danny will learn from any mistakes made last off-season. What I've heard from Doc and Wyc is certainly encouraging, too. I have high hopes and am very optimistic.

You know, I thought about the Birdman but as with any person that has addictions, following off the wagon can happen at anytime and giving him a long term guaranteed contract might be enough to entice him to feel like he can still perform while reaping the addictive benefits of having guaranteed money coming in.
